The Importance Of The National Anthem

Francis Scott Key’s Star Spangled Banner opens with, “O! Say can you see by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed,” When this great song begins to play in professional, college, high school, and even recreational sporting events, everyone is asked to stand and remove their hats for the singing of the National Anthem. If you have recently watched any National Football League games, you will notice that some athletes have chosen to kneel, or not emerge from the locker room, for this remarkable song. NFL players and competitors of all sports should have respect and stand up for the National Anthem. Players, officials, and spectators should stand during the National Anthem in honor of those who have fought for our country and for those who are currently fighting. Multifarious cases have occurred in which professional athletes have knelt or remained seated during the anthem. On August 26th, 2016, Colin Kaepernick sat during the National Anthem of the 49ers third preseason game. He did this in protest of racial discrimination, and the deaths of African American’s encounters with law enforcement. Conversely, he did not sit during the National Anthem of the previous two preseason games. Nevertheless, he went unnoticed, due to the fact that he had not dressed out in the regalia (National Football League np). Yes, he does have the right to sit due to the rights written in the constitution. However, he should stand to show respect for the country he resides in. Later on
