The Importance of Cultivating Good Reading Habits
Mark Twain once said, “The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man that cannot read them”. How true, for those who do not read are no better off than those who cannot read. We may say with, certainty that the more one reads, the better one understands; and that the better one understands, the more one is inclined to read. In other words, from reading comes understanding, and from understanding comes more reading. The reading habit is actually cultivated by reading itself. It is observed that children and teenagers who love reading have comparatively higher IQs. They are more creative and do better in school and college. Children must be motivated to read and enjoy doing so. Reading story book to them is one sure way of achieving this. As children normally like to hear stories before they go to bed, parents could make use of this opportunity to encourage the habit of reading. The only tragedy is that, with time, people have lost their skill and passion to read. In actual words, they are implying that they have lost the urge to educate themselves by keeping abreast with the current trend of thought like science, and technology, literature, philosophy etc. One must know that education does not end upon leaving school or university. Knowledge is infinite. To acquire knowledge is a new-ending process. Reading is important to help us improve our language proficiency. By exposing ourselves to the proper use of language, we can improve our grammar and vocabulary. By reading, we would also enhance our understanding of word usage in different contexts. Reading helps in mental development and is known to stimulate the muscles of the eyes. We can learn about various countries and cultures in other parts of the world.
