The main idea of this paper is to introduce you to what really happens as a high school athlete and the things you learn along the way. High school sports is way more than just playing the sport, it shows you what you are really made of and how to handle problems life is going to throw at you. The adversity you face as an athlete carries over to real world problems and you have been there and done that, so handling adversity is second nature. This information comes from all my coaches, myself and Friday Night Lights. I feel I have already grown as a person by competing in athletics and calling other people my brothers. Not only does high school athletics help you in the long run, but it helps you with problems you have now.

It showed everyone's problems and how they handle those problems. In some cases like the star quarterback Brian who was paralyzed from the waist down, showed how he handle that major obstacle by himself. Rarely did Friday Night Lights show the coach, players, or family support him. In real life football culture the star quarterback who was paralyzed would get endless amounts of support. Not only from his family, but his football family too. The football family along with his real family would be there with him through all the ups and downs. Not just for a month, but for his whole life. Football culture creates a bond that can never be broken and Friday Night Lights did a bad job of showing that truth, but in other cases, Friday Night Lights did an amazing job by showing the truth of football culture by how they handle adversity. Adversity is everywhere and can hit you at any time of the day and any day in the year. As adversity hit the star Running Back Dash, he folded it up and called it quits. He was going to be a gangster and play the “streets” game, but something changed inside of Dash. After the abuse charges and numerous of injuries he could not quit, he worked harder than he has ever worked before. He pushed himself to the limit and got that scholarship he dreamed of getting. You might ask what changed inside of Dash, and that answer is his coach. His coach walked to his house and told him how it was, he saw great talent and a great young man. All Dash needed was a reminder and throughout all the problems that have been explained in this paper you always need that back bone of advice and Friday Night Lights did a fantastic job of proving that. In the TV show the coach was the backbone for advice. Any problems the players faced they went straight to the coach. They did not go to their mom or dad, but they went to the leader of their second family and that holds a
In conclusion, the benefits of sports cannot be denied. There is no doubt that interscholastic athletics in high schools are generally good for student’s mind and health. It is the mental and conceptual area that many use to support the importance of participation in competitive sports, something many can wholeheartedly agree with. It is also the same area that some point to when behavior exhibited by some athletes does not seem to support what is believed they should be learning. As with anything, however, one can only get out of something what one puts in. Athletics also provides social benefits and center on concepts such as cooperation, teamwork, and friendships. All of which can also benefit them in school and the workplace. Physical benefits
Football remains the most popular sport in America and the ninth most popular sport in the world for a reason. Since its creation in 1869, football has played a fundamental part of American society. Every Sunday, my family along with millions of other Americans turn the television to CBS, NBC or FOX to watch their favorite football team go to battle. My family and I bleed burgundy and gold and root for the home team the Washington Redskins. Americans including myself display great intensity and passion for the game of football and the result of the game often changes my attitude for the better or worse. Watching the game on television may come as exhilarating and entertaining, but playing the game creates the best times. Overall football has made a severe impact on many people’s lives. Football teaches unique lessons in a hands on manner which helps athletes like myself sustain a much more adventurous life. Football has made an immeasurably positive influence upon my life, but the sport has its dangers. Football changes lives.
Football is an American sport that consists of two teams composed of 11 men. On the 100-yard field, they go head to head, trying to keep the other team from advancing the ball down the field toward the end zone, resulting in a touchdown or field goal. Football pits the two teams against each other. The offense, which possesses the ball, is placed against the defense, which tries to prevent the offense from advancing the ball. Several different resources can contribute to a team’s success. Some of those resources are funds, talent level of players, and favorable position on the field, which makes it easier to score points. The four sociological perspectives, structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and social exchange theory, all credit different reasons for one team being able to achieve this goal more often than another team. Nevertheless, any of the sociological perspectives you view the sport from, football is a very complex entity. Football is more than just a group of men pounding one another. There is a complex equation that eventually equals success; the differences between these perspectives are the components of the equation that are most heavily weighed on for success. Although it may be a combination of all three perspectives that leads to success in football, it is fair to look at the game from each perspective individually because each holds important insight into what truly leads to a successful football team.
Within sports, pressure is always there; you have to learn to deal with it. H. G. Bissinger’s book, Friday Night Lights, hones in on the football team the Permian Panthers of Odessa. Through this focus on the team, one can see how football is an integral part of the town thriving, maintaining its hopes and dreams. Despite the racial and social divide within the community, those Friday night games become a place where dreams may be made possible. In this way, sports, specifically football, not only have an impact on the players but the community as well.
From my earliest memories school sports have been a part of my life. When I was in elementary school I watched my older siblings play basketball, football, baseball, and even male cheerleading. I couldn’t wait for my chance to play on a team, and make a difference. I have been very fortunate to be a part of many great teams at Mandan. I have grown and developed not only as an athlete, but also a person through the athletic programs. Sports have taught me to be accountable, to show up on time, to work hard, to practice, and to push myself to the best of my abilities. They have made me mentally and physically stronger than I ever thought possible and taught me to help push other members to be the best they can possibly be.
For many people, football is not just a sport. The book Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger is set in Odessa, Texas where thousands of people would line up to buy tickets for the Permian Panthers’ football games, not because they enjoyed watching football, but because of the hope and inspiration that resonated throughout the field during a game. Even the players were able to recognize this feeling of invincibility because “whatever they fantasized about, it all seemed possible that day” when they were playing football (24). Football becomes an outlet for the fans that draws the attention away from the complexities of their lives and directs it towards a game that promotes innocence and hope for them. Football transforms Odessa from a bleak, hopeless town into a place where anyone’s wildest
With my stick in my hand and passion in my heart, I looked to my left to see the group of fearsome girls practicing in silence on the turf field. With this sight, I muttered quietly to myself underneath my breath, “Never Again”. Over the course of my enduring three years in high school so far, I have been apart of many different communities with diverse people coming together to express unity amongst each other. The exposure of different clubs, sports teams, and friend groups have shown me many unique ideas and lessons. However, the lesson I have valued the most was my choice of finding a sport that made me feel more positive and allowed me to succeed to my full potential.
Teens don’t realize until their coaches, teammates, and teachers want them to exceed excellence and succeed in life. Despite the urge for teens to get into a sports team, the sad truth is that high school sports can cause health injuries, interfere with education and most high schools favor those in sports teams One of the major disadvantages of playing high school sports is that it has the potential
Since the introduction of organized team sports into American culture, numerous sports have stepped into the limelight for certain periods of time but none have stuck around as long as football has. Just as with everything else in life, football has had it’s fair share of drawbacks since its invention in the mid-19th century. Despite the drawbacks and criticism football has faced, its role and influence on American culture between the 1890’s and 1930’s far outweigh the negative aspects of its past.
The popularity of pro football has jumped in recent years compared to other sports in the States, such as pro basketball and major league baseball. During my time as a kid I always thought that being in the NFL was the most amazing thing. But as time has caught up with me certain things have made me wonder if it’s worth it. Athletes in the NFL make millions, but they also endure certain life problems, which we, as fans, don’t see, to include injuries such as concussions, ACL tears, financial problems, and quality of life issues after football. In this essay I will give examples of why being a football player is a harder life than what the casual fan may think.
Friday practices were always the worst to Curt, it was the fact that he was so close to going home for the weekend after school but he still had football practice to look forward to. This practice had been exhausting for the quarterback, almost constant running and senseless drilling had made the team's morale go down beyond the level it was meant to be at.
The bang of the head, the crack of the bone, the tear of a muscle, are all things that high school athletes put themselves at risks for. Every time a high school athlete steps foot on a field, rink, or court they put themself in a risky situation. Although the risk may be there, athletes achieve many valuable lessons throughout high school sports. The valuable lessons promote self-confidence, socialization and team spirit, as well as decreases stress. While playing sports, athletes are at excessive risks of being injured. Although high school athletes have a risk of being injured, the benefits of high school sports programs outweighs the physical risk because of its benefits to teenagers mental health, benefits to teenagers physical health,
Sports are embedded in many American schools in a way they are not anywhere else. One element of our educational system consistently surprises them, “Sports are a huge deal in American schools,” says Earl Smith of the New York Times. The positives have always outweighed the negatives in the case against high school sports. As Sato Kai state, “The benefits of sports as part of the education process are abundant and sometimes beyond quantifications,” According to many academic specialists, sports offer formative and life long lessons such as: discipline, responsibility, self confidence, and accountability. These skills can furthermore excel your later life and give you a greater chance of being employed in a high level job. Participation in high school sports helps your later development as an adult and teaches you life long skills that can't be taught elsewhere.
Hlavaz. I chose her because I got to know her well last year because of AP Psychology, and I feel like she got to know me pretty well too. I know that she’ll help me with whatever I may need throughout the course of this project. I do not have a content mentor. My essential question is what are the positive effects of playing sports at a young age. I feel like this topic is important because sports have always been prevalent in society, but in the past decade or so, there has been more of a push, or movement, to get the younger generation involved in youth sports. I hope to find out the cause of this major push- to find out why it is important for kids to play sports at a young age. Through job shadowing a PE teacher, along with running the t-ball clinic, I hopefully will be able to see some of the immediate positive effects of athletics on young kids, which could possible be anything such as better attitudes, more friends made, and improved teamwork
Over seventy percent of adolescents play sports (Uzoma, 2015). Athletics can be used for the development of social character, values of teamwork, sacrifice, and obedience (Rudd & Stoll, 2004). The sports world offers social opportunities for adolescents (Rutten, Schuengel, Dirks, Stams, Biesta, & Hoeksma, 2011). Participating in sports as adolescents may help with learning how to respect the community, peers, family, and themselves (Berlin, Dworkin, Eames, Menconi, & Perkins, 2007). Sports may affect social character growth and development. The purpose of the paper was to understand how peer interaction, the influences of parents and coaches, and the cognitive choices of the adolescent impact character development.
