Today’s society of young Americans are concerned with social media and the trends that are presented, but what makes something a trend? In the past couple of years, it seems like in order for something to be a trend white people have to like it and make it popular. The media portrays to everyone in America that these trends were originated or even inspired by white people, but this isn’t true. A lot of the trends that are happening are actually from black people whether it’s black people’s facial features, appearance or hairstyle. The trends today represent cultural appropriation by offending black people and taking credit for these trends. However, white people think trends are innocent and don’t understand why they can’t do the same things
The American Culture today has changed the way we live. It has made Americans emotional, because of the news that has been told such as national disasters that has come about. These national disasters show American unity and caring. The News Media plays a big part in American Culture because we need to know the truth about what’s going on around us. American Culture and Media are the same in a lot of ways, people want to know that the way they live is not influenced by the wrong and bad things that the culture has and explained by journalist. Without journalism people will be less important such as stars who love paparazzi and the afternoon local news that shows and reports what’s going on around us. Media makes American Culture seems nice and enjoyable for them to live here.
In the present culture of the United States, social media has had a major impact in American society. It has a profound influence and intertwined itself in almost every aspect of the average American’s life. It ranges from providing updates of location of a person(s), events, and sharing personal moments. Even different industries are utilizing social media as a platform for communication, information, and sales mediums. One industry, the health care field has seen a rise in the utilization of social media. For instance, an emerging population of physicians are using social media apps such as Snap Chat, Facebook, and YouTube to educate, display surgical, and medical procedures while being performed. In contrast, as there are positive aspects of utilizing social media, a negative trait of social media is invading and exposing individual’s privacy. As of recent, a New York licensed nurse had to surrender her nursing license and sentenced to 3 years of probation for “moral unfitness in the practice (Bowerman, 2016).” She took photos with her phone of two unconscious male patient’s genitalia and shared them with coworkers. This has become an increasing issue and as the utilization of social media in healthcare is increasing, many ethical issues are developing. For instance, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was passed for the adoption of a national standard for electronic health care transactions and code sets, unique health identifiers,
Other accounts of assimilation can be seen in the majority of minorities in the United States, without representation or credibility of the roots in which it stems from. Cultural appropriation is becoming a popular aesthetic outlet. Pop culture is thriving at the hands of theft, and people are neglecting the recognition of historical context and customs of minorities.
When it comes to entertainment especially in today's day and age the world revolves around it. You have to realize that personally I don't know one person who doesn't wake up every morning and look at their phone for missed text or to check their social media and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. There are many different ways that various forms of entertainment media have shaped American culture and its value. Starting off I think the one thing that really started the whole social media hype was Myspace because it gave people a real opportunity to express themselves and really show the world their talents and ideas, yes YouTube gave the world a chance to look at different people's talent and ideas but Myspace gave you a chance to express really yourself and share your current
A mainstream trend does not merely appear without warning—most likely, the thought behind the trend had been around for a while. According to Gladwell, in order for a trend to grow amidst the influx of newer trends, three types of people must be working hard behind the scenes. In the chapter “Case Study: Rumors, Sneakers, and the Power of Translation”, Gladwell details the roles of Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen, and how they unknowingly act together as a bridge between hipsters and mainstream media. Gladwell’s assessment of the Connectors is valid, as they play the role of the bridge itself as he/she has to be cogent and merge two completely different strata. An excellent portrayal of this would be Gladwell’s example
The advantages of having information so obtainable is that we can get information that we would like to know at the tip of our hands. Now that we have smartphones it is nice that we can look up addresses to certain places and be able to get the navigation application direct you to the location. It is nice to be able to get information that we need so easily I enjoy that it is so accessible. I constantly use the internet to look for information that I need. It can be to look up what certain person have contributed to history and how it has changed us. I also use it to find out side effects on medication or what is the medication is used to treat. This has helped me a lot at my job.
During the 2000s there were many events going on like terrorism attacking the United States. Also during that time social media was booming like MySpace. It was a way for me to communicate with family relatives around the earth. Social media was a good way to stay connected and relive moments that our family had created in the past. Those moments like gathering to welcome a new year with food, music and dancing to having conversations about our families past generation.
Cultural appropriation is something that has plagued America’s Black community for as long as it has been here. Cultural appropriation is taking aspects of another culture and using them disrespectfully or without credit to the original culture. This has happened to Black people since they were brought to America as slaves and still occurs today. From hairstyles to music white Americans have used Black culture as a basis for their own fashion and benefited off of it. This is an issue because as their culture is appropriated and sold back to them Black people are shown that their culture is not anything of value, that these things only matter or are profitable when done by white people. Cultural appropriation includes intangible things as
The United States of America can be seen as one of the most countries to be tech savvy. Specifically, with social media, which is used as a medium to communicate movements such Black Lives Matter due to the usage of unnecessary force from police used on Black Americans, has made an impact in Iran. Similarly, to the US movement, accusations of fraud during the June 2009 Iranian presidential elections caused protests and many citizens asking for a recount. Many Iranian citizens, however, do not have access to the internet nor any other social media sites so they are not able to access social media to fully understand what events were going on in Iran. Some would say social media did not have a role in the protests held in Iran. My
The internet makes the world feel a lot smaller and clearly much more connected. It has been used as a means to receive and transmit information in mere seconds across the globe. This has had a huge impact on how we receive our news and how it is being reported on. I looked at several news websites from around the world and looked into how they portray news to their audience.
Amandla is an African American and she believes that African American people are looked down upon as 'ghetto' when they wear a certain style, but when another race does it is considered fashion. In the Huffington Post they go into detail on how Amandla goes in depth about this social problem in a video she posted on her Tumblr. Where a lot of people go on to follow more people to reblog stories like hers, fashion, and pretty much anything you are interested in; can be reblogged for thousands to see. People see media as a great thing but Amandla believes that social media is one of the problems with culture appropriation because a person can post what they are wearing, which is inspired by their culture and another person can see that and wear it based on their personal liking. With that going on, hundreds and thousands of people are dressing a certain way and it starts to trend, but when it is not a trend it is looked as something of
Nowadays trends are everywhere. You can find them in every industry and they play a huge role. The retro trend in clothing, the SUV trend in the car industry, but nowhere else are trends more important than in the hospitality industry. But what exactly is a trend? A trend describes usually the time measurable course of a development into a certain quantitative and/or qualitative direction. In economics, trends are changes of the behavior of the society. In marketing research this describes the change and development of the consumerism and consumption behavior.
How does social media usage by teenagers and young adults affect academic performance, attitude towards school, and concept of identity?
Can you imagine living in a world with no social media or smartphone? No instagram, twitter, facebook or snapchat? Believe it or not, that world existed before us millennials did. According to an article found on the Pew Research Center.com, entitled “The Demographics of Social Media Users”, the amount of Facebook users is “72% of adult internet users [and] 62% of entire adult population.” Facebook along with other media outlets have easily become the norm for young adults and older adults in today’s society. The rapid growth of accessibility to social media networking was made possible from the creation and use of smart phones. The combination of social media sites and smart phone users has single handedly eliminated the need for human interactions, but also has provided a repertoire of information at our fingertips. I will discuss the following: the history of Facebook and its impact, the creation of the iPhone and its development of social media apps like Instagram, and the effects of cyberbullying. The purpose of this essay is to explore the productive qualities and destructive qualities that various social media outlets have presented to our generation.
Some of the top benefits of social media over the years are that it is free to anyone, the content can get out to resources virtually immediately, and it can be delivered to a wide variety of people. For these reasons, communication through social media has become an extremely accessible and convenient way to communicate. It is also popular for those who need to be in contact with others. One example that comes to mind is a teenager who goes away on a trip to visit a friend or family. They can be hundreds of miles away but still talk to their parents as if they weren’t. Another example is a person who is shy and has a hard time making friends face-to-face, social media sites are a great way to meet people and build relationships.
