The Influence Of The Gods On Mount Olympus

The Greek society believed in polytheism. They believed that their were many gods and that each god has the power to control different aspects of nature. In this paper I will be explaining why this has come to be. I will also tell you about the fact that no matter what the Greek Gods do it will affect the Greek Society, and no matter what the Greek Society does it will affect themselves or the Greek Gods.

“Mythos”- a Greek word meaning “tale” and the origin of the word mythology; according to the dictionary mythology means, a traditional story aiming to explain the meaning of things concerning deities and demigods.

In Greek mythology Hercules is known for his strength and courage, considered as half man and half god. He was an adventurous superhuman born from mortal mother and the son of god Zeus. Hera, the jealous wife of Zeus decided to kill Hercules after his birth. Hercules then married the Theben princess Megara and had three children. However, Hera wasn’t happy about him. She was filled hatred of him, and as time goes, this situation made him to kill his wife and all his children. Hercules then felt guilty about the crime he had done. Hercules was charged to serve his cousin, king Eurystheus, and the ‘twelve labors’ were given to him as punishments. Those labors are a call to adventure that made Hercules to cross the threshold

“ A huge boar was ravaging cattle on mount Erymanthus, and again Hercules was required to capture it alive. This pised him no problem… he chased the boar… until it collapsed… and then bound the beast in chains.” ( Creighton 99) He got a lot of experience from this labour because he had to chase down this wild boar, and then chain it up. So if any tragedies like this occur in the city, he would be able to take care of it. “ The third labour imposed on Hercules was the capture of a deer with golden antlers… Eurystheus wanted him to bring the animal back alive, Hercules brought it down by shooting an arrow neatly through the forelegs.” ( Creighton 98) To hit a shot like that, there is lots of experience necessary, so even before the 12 labours, Hercules had these amazing skills of running, shooting, hunting and so on. The best hero, most also have the most experience and skills, that is why Hercules is the greatest hero. Hercules is not the hero that greek mythology glorifies him to be. His ruthless acts to “purify” himself from killing his family, are nothing but him following commands of robbery, whether it be of a life or possession. He is less of a hero and more of a modern day hired ‘hitman’. Hercules agreed to completing the twelve tedious labours, however bad they might be. If he was ordered to steal something, he would. If he was told to kill something, he would do it. His actions are more alike the ones of an assassin or hitman rather than a selfless hero.

In this paragraph will be information on Greek Gods and Goddesses. There was a governing body for the Grecians. This mythological group was very important. They were usually the reason for war and many believed that they were so superior that they would bring disease and death upon others that they dislike or the people that would try to out shine them. They were called The Olympians. There were twelve Olympians, however before I name them there actually were 13, but Hestia gave up her position for Dionysus. There was Zeus, Poseidon, Hermes, Hephatus, Hera, Demeter, Aphrodite, Athena, Artimes, Dionysus, Aries (Ares or Aris), and Apollo.” (Greek Gods and Goddesses) There was one other God that is also very important to the Olympians. His name was Hades and he was the God of the Dead. He was not considered an Olympian though because he was always to be in the Underworld. Hades had one day decided that he wanted a partner however

As Hephaestus is notified of Thetis’ arrival, he explores what their relationship has meant to him. Hephaestus recalls that “Thetis saved my life when the mortal pain came on me after my great fall…” (P. 480) After Hephaestus falls out of Zeus’ good graces, Thetis is able to lend her helping hand, displaying the hierarchical dynamic between the gods. The gods are indebted to each other, the likely reason that Hephaestus felt as though he needed to make Thetis the ornate shield. The duty and obligation to each other fuels the mutualistic relationships between the gods. Thetis’ motivation to help Hephaestus was not solely out of kindness; rather Thetis saw the opportunity to make a strategic move and put Hephaestus in her debt, knowing that she very well could use his services in her future. Hephaestus describes the pain that he felt as “mortal pain” signifying a distinction between the discomforts and vulnerability of mortals and gods.

Each god has a certain domain and cannot control another gods' domain. All the gods including Zeus, the father of the gods, want Odysseus to be able to return home in The Odyssey. However, Poseiden, just one god, prevents Odysseus from returning. It is only when Poseiden is absent from Mt. Olympus that the other gods are able to take control and

In the Iliad the line between man and god would often clash. A god could transport a mortal, sleep with a mortal, and also magically help that mortal. These gods seem to be the only ones who can change and decide fate. The gods can whisk people away or bend off an arrow and a sword. For example, when Paris fought Menelaus, he was whisked away by Aphrodite before Menelaus could do more damage. Their so called gods, weren’t so unreachable. In the Odyssey, we see how goddess’ and gods behave just like humans with their urges; example Calypso, who offers Odysseus everything if only he would stay with her. Plus Athena, made herself Odysseus’ guardian, she would give him advice and plead his case on mount Olympus. There we see how the gods decide a person’s fate and also act selfishly with disregard to mortal feelings. Toying with humans

Later on, Zeus appears to Hercules and gives him to the task to become a true hero, so he can then rejoin the Olympians on Mt. Olympus leaving behind his regular life behind. This is when Hercules accepts the call and advances to the next stage, entering the unknown. Emerging himself into a world of mythical creatures. Zeus then provides Hercules with helpers, Pegasus and Phil to assist him with his quest. Without their help it is likely that Hercules would not be able to complete the task (give examples how they did this). Zeus ends up becoming Hercules’ supernatural aid. As king of the gods and Hercule’s true father he has mastered the laws of the outside world and appears to bestow the wisdom Hercules needs to achieve his goal. As Hercules trains to reach divinity, he becomes famous among the citizens. However, when he returns to the Temple of Zeus, Zeus explain that fame is not equivalent to heroism and he must find the true meaning of the word. Afterwards, Hercules encounters his test and supreme ordeal. Along the journey his love interest, Meg, is captured by Hades and the only way to free her is to surrender his

In The Odyssey The Great Odysseus encounters the god Poseidon, and the goddess Athena that impact his life in negative and positive aspects, but none of these impacts could have been done without the decision of Odysseus himself. Mortals venerate these gods and goddesses; from a young age they’re taught to respect them or bad karma may come their way. As a human nature we make absurd mistakes without consent and analysis, Odysseus’s greatest mistake was his ignorant decision on attacking Poseidon’s son, “Hear me Poseidon...if I really am your son, and you claim to be my father grant that odysseus, raider of cities, Laertes son who makes his home in Ithaca never reaches home” ( Homer 228) Poseidon receives this message from his son, and his wrath gives misfortune on

The gravity of the situation seems too heavy to handle. He is extremely overwhelmed; he has just been called upon to complete a daring adventure. His indifference is justified, since he has no idea what to expect on this journey. However, some sort of event takes place that makes the hero reconsider the possibility of going on the journey (Vogler). In Hercules, Hercules doesn’t know what he’s about to get himself into. He is quite surprised after he meets Zeus in his statue form. However, once Zeus tells him that he can be a god, Hercules becomes eager to set out on his journey

Hercules was favored by the gods from few quest and even a labor. For the sixth labor the goddess Athena helped Hercules by scaring off the Stymphalian bird he had to do this because the birds were causing a plague with their numbers. Hercules shot arrows at the birds when Athena scared them. Hercules had many terrible experiences with love because of Hera. ”He was helped by Athena to drive them out of their converts. ”(Hamilton 172) Hercules was considered the greatest hero of gods because he had the most strength out of all and great emotion. When he was a baby Hera sent two snakes to kill him but Hercules held them both up and killed them. Even though he is called the greatest this didn't mean he was necessarily good most of the times when he did bad things it was hera controlling his mind. He killed his wife and three children when he was being controlled. “When Megara had borne three sons he went mad.” Later he killed his wife and children.

Anyone who is familiar with Greek mythology has heard a story about tyrannous Zeus, throwing thunderbolts, turning people into animals, or causing other supernatural events while releasing his wrath. He proves time and time again that he is more powerful than any mortal who tries to compete with him. Though Zeus is the mightiest, there are stories about many other gods demonstrating their power over mortals. Two such gods are Apollo and Dionysus. Heroism played a large part in the development of Greek Mythology and Greek civilization. Arguably one the most notable heroes in Greek mythology was Achilles, hero of the Trojan war and the Iliad. Achilles was looked upon with awesomeness because of the lifestyle he chose, and the way in which he helped the Greeks win the trojan war. Homer describes Achilles as “God-like” in the Iliad, which is a very common description of Greek heroes. And God-like they were in the deeds they accomplished, making the stories all the more great. In many ways, the Ancient Greek heroes were almost honored as much as the gods themselves. A great example of this is the Temple of Heracles in Akragas, which is a colossal peripteros temple that stretches 70 meters in length, and 25 meters in width. Going back to Achilles, people loved his choice of ‘lifestyle’ because of the decision he made when he was young. He chose to live a short, but a memorable one rather than an old but ‘basic’ life. When Achilles died, he was given a very extravagant funeral, as was to be expected. Thucydides once said that “The whole earth is a grave to heroes”, and this was true for the Greeks. If the tales of the heroes are true, than the Greeks had ever need to praise their heroes for their sacrifice, because without them the Greeks would never have reached the glory they
