Andres Narvaez Michael Walsh Mr. Sacerdote Asian Studies 5/7/15 The Invasion of Cambodia The invasion of Cambodia, announced by Richard Nixon, brought notoriety to itself for being an unnecessary act of war, which also promoted anti-war riots across the United States. These bombings on communist sanctuaries in Cambodia essentially invalidated the fact that it was neutral during this war. This left innocent people dead, as well as expended even more American troops. All of this even after his promise of "Vietnamization". To begin with, the operation of invading Cambodia came into the greater scheme of the Vietnam War. This all began in 1955 with The Communist North Vietnamese wanting a union with the Anti-Communist South Vietnamese, which was promptly refused. As a result war broke out and now the South Vietnamese not only had to deal with the north but also with a communist supporting group in the south known as the Viet Cong. This intensified the war as they were a guerrilla based group that would repeatedly ambush and attack the south at night. Now the United States began to see this as a problem and so in 1955 President Dwight Eisenhower announced his support to the South Vietnamese Forces and so their intervention in the war started. They started off small by sending equipment and offering training for the Vietnamese troops but later as tensions in the war rose even further President Lyndon Johnson along with the U.S. Congress, passed the "Gulf of Tonkin
