This has to be one of the most important issues of the current times because life as we know it will never be the same if something isn 't done. The problem is that we as humans are naturally selfish, so we think that we aren’t the problem. But the truth is we are, mostly to due with our greediness. We over-consume as a whole, we waste too much, we feel entitled and better than others, the list goes on and on. The fact of the matter is that there is no need for us to be all of this. We should feel content with what we are given and be sure that all are given the same. The green movement, isn 't just a social issue, it is a moral issue. One that we all need to partake in. This is relevant because the research shows how much we have altered with our planet and it 's not good (Enzler). The data includes things like the shrinking of the polar caps, the rising of the sea levels, the dramatic warming of the Earth’s temperature, the increase of carbon in the atmosphere etc.. As journalist for the Washington Post Chelsea Harvey explains, “The most alarming statistic has to be the rising of the sea levels which are expected to rise to 0.6 meters globally by the year 2100” (1). Harvey is saying how a rise this severe could be catastrophic for all countries. A rise in sea levels this high will lead to major flooding in coastal areas and cause massive water damage to cities. Coastal cities are some of the largest population centers in the world, and the rising sea levels will cause
The Green Revolution a period of time that genetically modified crops were engineered, pesticides and fertilizer were created starting in the 1940s ending in the 1960s. This period caused a lot of debate on the Green Revolution some stating it positively affected the world and some stating that it negatively affected the world. The positives of the Green Revolution include increasing yields, increasing profit for farmers, lowering prices for foods which then allows the poor afford the food, and crops can be genetically modified to contain specific vitamin. The Green revolution is negative because it caused an increase in global pollution, chemical pollution, and health risks due to the exposure to the chemical produced during the Green Revolution.
Since the beginning of the Human Race, gathering a sufficient amount of food has always proved to be a challenge. The Green Revolution attempted to solve this problem by creating and applying new techniques and technologies. The Green Revolution was created out of necessity and caused social changes, discontent with some of the effects, and the overall quality of living to be improved but the improvement of living quality had the greatest effect because this led to higher overall populations which in turn created the need to feed an even greater population.
As Earths average temperature increases every year, the discussion of climate change has become a significant topic in the scientific community. Human activities such as powering factories, running automobiles or something as simple as burning wood for heat, emit dangerous greenhouse gases. What makes these greenhouse gases so detrimental is that they absorb the heat radiating off of Earth and keep it in the lower atmosphere creating a “blanket” of warmth around the Earth’s surface. This causes a drastic increase in the Earths average temperature. Due to the rise in temperature, the polar caps have been melting faster than ever, this is dangerous not only because of the risk of floods and sea level increase but ocean water will become less saline and ecosystems will be destroyed, impacting humans just as much as marine life. In the article, Understand faulty thinking to tackle climate change by George Marshall, Marshall states that most people in our world today do not care about climate change because it will not affect them, “Which points to the real problem: climate change is exceptionally amorphous, … no deadlines, no geographic location, no single cause or solution.” (Marshall 2014). Because the author makes it clear that climate change is indeed a great plight, and fails to be acknowledged by people, it is a significant matter that should be discussed
Summary: In both the main article and the supporting article, the main point is that by the end of the century the climate here in the Bay Area will probably be a lot like the climate of San Diego. And while some might like this for their day to day schedule, this poses enormous environmental impacts. The Bay Area is a unique and rather fragile ecosystem, if the climate here changes to the climate of someplace like San Diego, then our environment will not be able to survive. Such a huge change in such a rapid rate of time could lead to an environmental disaster, and this could drastically affect the health of the people living in the Bay Area. And these effects will most likely not be for the best. Rising sea levels are always seen as a big deal, and they get lots of
Decades of research suggest that sea-levels are rising, and will continue to rise as a result of climate change. This rise will have the most immediate and significant impact on
The green movement seems to be more structured and willing to accept capitalism and tries to overcome it on a grander scale, both have positive attributes, however, agrarianism seeks to be more of an individual or small scale, and localized approach.
Bill Nye stated, “Climate change is happening, humans are causing it, and I think this is perhaps the most serious environmental issue facing us.” Humans are not only causing the climate change that Nye mentioned, but are also destroying the environment by wasting resources. The world has a serious problem that, if not dealt with right away, will lead to environmental catastrophe. However some people may ignore this warning from Nye and use the argument that the United States doesn’t need to worry about the environment because more pressing matters exist. In today’s world everyone uses energy and resources to meet their daily needs, but some of it is wasted unintentionally. The American government and its citizens have the responsibility to reduce this waste.
Sea level rise is another area of concern for scientists and the global community with respect to climate change. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the sea level has risen about 8 in. and continues to rise about 0.14 in. per year (National Climate Association). IPCC has predicted a sea level rise of 1m. (~3.3 ft.) by the end of this century (O‘Rourke), putting small island nations such as the Maldives and at risk of losing their land, as well as cities in the US such as Miami, New Orleans, and New York. Once again, this number may seem insignificant, but when one considers that approximately 5 million people live within 4 ft. of the high tide areas in the United States; and 1 in 10 persons live in low lying coastal areas around the globe, then the numbers illustrate cause for great concern. An estimated 634 million people will be impacted by rising sea levels (Greenfieldboyce) and 1 billion people could be displaced from their homes by 2050 as a result of climate change (O‘Rourke).
The Green Party took off heading to Western Europe and would soon find itself at the other side of the world and hit the United States. It became extremely popular in Germany, turning from the Value Party to “Die Grnen” (the Greens). It was considered the “mother of all Green Parties” (Arthur) and was given a strong presence there and later gained many seats. The party still routed in environmentalism focused on the climate change and global warming lost a lot of popularity to the citizens captivated with a strong patriotism and little care for the environment. It later teamed up with the Social Democratic Party but when it began to fail in the polls Germany went back to the conservative Christian Democratic Party. About 5 years after the Green
Persistently higher temperatures caused by global warming have led to greater than average summer melting as well as diminished snowfall due to later winters and earlier springs. This imbalance results in a consequential net gain in the rate of runoff to ocean evaporation, causing sea levels to rise dramatically. Sadly, many take slight notice towards this fact because it may not seem a dreadful and urgent effect at first. However, after concluding that a sum of forty percent of the world's population lives within one hundred kilometers of the ocean, the severity of this effect is clear. Thousands of major towns and cities will be flooded, putting millions of lives and billions of dollars' worth of property and infrastructure at risk. As the water reaches further inland, it can cause destructive erosion, wetland flooding, agricultural soil contamination, and loss of habitat for fish, birds, and plants. These are just what a single effect of global warming will cause, showing that this matter must be taken seriously by all. Remember, This planet is our home, which means it is our concern, and if we don't do something to protect it...who
First of all, There is strong evidence that global sea level is getting higher and will continue to rise during this century. There are some human activities, such as burning of fossil fuels and cutting down tropical forests, have gained atmospheric absorption of heat-trapping gases releases enormous amounts into the air. It means that the Earth’s surface temperature increases, and the oceans absorb that additional heat. There is no doubt that when the ocean is warmer, large ice formations, like glaciers and the polar ice caps, naturally melt back faster and add more water to the oceans. The melting ice caps are raising sea levels at an accelerating rate. According to Howard (2015), “A bombshell climate study published this week warns that
How much do you really know about the sea level and how much it changed and the affect it has on the environment and our homes? The sea level has changed a lot and will continue to change as well as change people’s lives and effect the world as a whole because the sea level can affect many things in the world – like people, animals and even the way the world looks today—as well as cause a huge chain reaction of huge changes. Global worming has a hug affected the sea level rising. It is important because if the sea water keeps rising many places will eventually be under water causing them to lose their home or worse. As well as affecting everyone in the world not just some people.
Greenpeace is an organization which often collides with governments in countries all over the world in its attempt to stop things like global warming, deforestation, overfishing and more. Greenpeace tries to reach their goals by direct action and lobbying. This is the part where they often collide with the governments.
The green revolution is generally used to explain the application of modern, western-type farming techniques to less economically developed countries. The Green Revolution = == ==
In today’s modern day, the green living movement “intersects local state and federal politics. it impacts business practices, art and the media, education and health in the united states” (Gordon). The green living movement’s purpose is to control pollution or protect plant and animal diversity. In the 1960’s until the present, there has been a lot of controversy. Fallout from testing air pollution from millions of factories, cars belching chemicals into the atmosphere, and deliberate destruction of pristine rivers and lakes (such as Ohio’s Cuyahoga River, that famously caught fire). These disasters, including the disappearance of farmland and forests under suburban development, were a concern to many citizens. These concerns are still
