The Journey Of A Short Story

The Hub's science level was an endless jumble of labs and test centres interspersed with cafes, libraries and restrooms. The sprawling labyrinth spread like a technological metropolis from the Hub's core to its outer hull and took in over fourteen square miles of design suites, but for the last two days, only a single scientist walked its halls. John Wallace. His mood swung from overwhelming sadness when faced with the potential death of his friend and colleague, Lisa, to excited elation at the promise of the scientific adventure ahead of him. He flitted from one room to the next. Each carried a fresh discovery and marvels beyond his wildest dreams. But then at last, with his patience and hunger to explore waning, he found what he was …show more content…

He skipped past it, and then his eyes settled on the third, a sleek oval design, five decks in height, almost two hundred feet wide and three hundred and twenty feet long. He nodded thoughtfully at its potential. Then quickly, he set to work. The Hub's software allowed the user to integrate entire systems, from life support to engineering and stellar cartography, with the touch of a button. The hours went by in a flash. But as Wallace paused, he noticed the middle deck was bare of equipment. "Hub. Why is Deck Three empty?" "Deck Three is for munitions. Please select a power source for your vessel." The options opened ahead. He took a few seconds to adjust his vision, but then he froze, staring at the third choice, an early AGU prototype. He pored over the blueprints. It became evident Obsidia's AGU was not of Earth's design. It was The Hubs. "Hub. Instal the AGU tech as the ship's power source." "Unable to combine, this technology is unfinished." He hesitated for a second, determined not to be beaten. "Hub. Download the specs from Obsidia. Add that AGU instead." He waited in silence for the response, his heart tightening in his chest as he wondered if it was possible. "Processing. This action will take fifteen minutes and thirty-two seconds to complete." Wallace smiled and evaluated the remaining weapon's energy sources, but the only suitable technology was a miniaturised version of The Hub's core, and he understood the reasoning
