The novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan shows the past and present experiences of several women including An-mei Hsu, the mother of Rose Hsu Jordan. Beginning at a young age, An-mei has to endure many situations. Her grandmother tells her that her mother is a ghost but she comes back to take care of her grandmother when she is ill. Due to the absence of her mother during her childhood years, she tries to be there for Rose as much as possible but is pushed away. An-mei believes she has nengkin, the ability to do anything she puts her mind to but after a devastating event at the beach her beliefs change. Through exploring An-mei’s tragedies from the past, it is revealed that An-mei loses hope in nengkin, but tries to make a difference when it comes to her daughter’s marriage. One of the tragedies that lead up to An-mei constantly trying to be there for her daughter Rose is her own mother leaving her as a child. When An-mei was four years old, her mother and her grandmother get into an argument. An-mei’s grandmother says, “Who is this ghost? Not an honored widow, Just a number three concubine”(46). When her grandmother calls her a ghost, she is actually kicking An-mei’s mother out of the house. An-mei is voiceless during this situation, she cannot do anything to make a difference. Later on in the story, Rose tries to find the right time to tell An-mei that Ted wants a divorce. When she does, An-mei tells her to try and save the marriage. After listening to what her mother
