As of 2015, immigrants make up more than 43.3 percent of the United States population. By the early 1900s there were already more than 10 million immigrants living in America. Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle reveals the struggles and hardships of a family that immigrated to the United States from Lithuania during the 1900s. Although many immigrant families came to America in search of a better life, soon most found themselves barely surviving with no job, food, shelter, or money. As is the case of the family in The Jungle. The novel not only unveils the corruption of the political and economic system during the time, but also exposes the severe torment and misery that was faced by the working class. One day, he drank too much and ended up locked in the factory all night because he had passed out. By morning, when they found him, he was discovered to have been supposedly eaten alive by rats. There were many less prominent examples of how alcohol affected the lives of immigrants throughout the novel. One of which being a porter that was repeatedly hired by Tommy Hinds, a socialist hotel manager Jurgis meets close to the end of the book. When Jurgis goes to Hinds for a job, Hinds asks him if he drinks. Jurgis tells him no, after which Hinds explains that he had recently been employing a man, who drinks, as a porter. Hinds told Jurgis that he has discharged him seven times already. By including this, Sinclair informs the readers about how difficult it was for a person who drinks to keep a job, compared a person who did not.
Poverty was a big factor that often plagued the working class immigrants. One of the main characters, Marija Berczynskas, goes through multiple jobs throughout the duration of The Jungle. Near the end of the story, once Jurgis returns to his family from his journey in the country, he finds out that Marija had gotten a job as a prostitute. She accepted the job to financially support what is left of the family and to allow Teta Elzbieta’s children to go to school.
