Weeks had passed since that unfaithful night, yet the images still haunted Breya’s mind. She had found out that it was Mabel that she had pulled out of the car. After the ambulance had taken her away, Breya returned home and had a relentless and tormenting weekend full of nightmares and images of the accident. After word had gotten out, everyone knew what happened. The accident was much worse than she could have imagined, after a night in the hospital they found that Mabel had been lucky though. With a major concussion one or two more blows to the head would have killed her. Although her wounds would heal, she would never be able to walk again. Her spinal cord had been partially severed by her shattered vertebrae leaving no feeling from the waist down. The healing process would take time, both mentally and physically she had been mutilated. Her dreams had died with no chance of being a sports star. The newfound scar tissue covering her face, wouldn’t attract the guys like it did before. Her beauty was gone; and with it her pride, life and happiness. When she finally returned to school, things were not the same as they had been. She rolled down the hall in her chair avoiding the stares of the school. The people once considered her close friends greeted her with whispers and curious glances. She was still the talk of the school, but not in the good way. Her looks had gotten her a lot farther than she had ever realized. Popularity was a thing or her past. School became a
Sports in the media and popular culture effect how society and young adolescents view and value male and female athletes. Many young children begin to idolize professional athletes and how much money they make rather than focusing on the people who work “normal” jobs to make our lives better and safe, “… a person who saves lives, a person who protects and servers struggling families, and a person who shapes and molds young minds make a mere fraction of what sports stars make” ( Walker 344). This pushes the media and pop culture to persuade children to believe that professional athletes should be seen as more important than people like Teachers, Police Officers and Doctors who work to help us rather than just being here for our entertainment.
I’ve never been much of a writer, don’t get me wrong I don’t hate writing; I have just never excelled at it. Originally when were given this assignment I thought it would be simple, I already had an idea of what I wanted to write about, but like always I knew I would struggle with finding the right words to use in order to actually write the story. Although I knew what I wanted to write about I still wasn’t completely sure if I wanted to write about this topic, not only because of the challenges it would present but because It was going to be a story about a real friend of mine. The story was going to be about the life of an illegal immigrant who like many others had the dream of becoming a professional football player.
Ricardo Kaka, Zindine Zidane, these are the names of two legendary soccer players who represent the polarized sides of a very diverse spectrum of player attitudes, behaviors, and perspectives. Each player demonstrates a very high level of skill and determination that has brought them fans from across the globe, however one has conducted himself to a higher standard following respect and demonstrating fairness and honorable behaviors, whereas the other has acted disgracefully on multiple occasions and has sealed himself into the infamous side of the history books. These ideals must be reviewed and analyzed in order to understand what we have become as audiences, and what we venerate in society. Will we promote ethics or immorality? I believe these reflections can reveal a great sum about how we conduct ourselves and how we truly regard ethics in sports.
What is the only thing harder than disciplining a dozen ten year olds? Disciplining them on ice! All throughout my life I’ve played sports, and no matter what sport it was, there was always one person who seemed to have it out for me…the referee. The referee is one of the most hated people in the world of sports, but is also one of the most crucial. I grew up with the mindset that the referee was the enemy. Whenever they made a call against me or my team, they were always wrong, no matter how obvious the penalty was. But one day, my whole perspective on referees changed---the day I became a referee.
Joni Eareckson Tada stood at the edge of the rock as she had done many times that summer. When she dove into the water, she felt her head hit something hard. An agonizing pain tore through her head. She felt as if her hands and feet were tied by ropes. As she rode in the back of the ambulance that afternoon, Joni thought that her injury was not serious. She had no idea how drastically her life was about to change.
Her enthusiasm lasted till lunchtime, fading only when no one came forward to talk to her, to tell her how beautiful she looked that day, to apologize, perhaps, for the late-night phone call. She is so desperate to know who it was. For her this is one in a billion of amazing things that happen to her. Today would be no different at all, she realized. It was just as if nothing had ever happened. What if it never happens again? Thinking to herself she thought that maybe she was sick and this was all just a dream. No one could ever like someone like her, I mean she wasn’t the prettiest and she didn’t have the “perfect
Name one thing that brings an entire city, state, or country together. Sports. Of any kind. It really is a huge part of human society without you even realizing it. Athletics are as important to a child’s life as a tractor is to a farmer. Especially for young adults in high school. Either in going to the games, or playing in them. Athletics play an influential part in my life because it brings responsibility, and prepares me for the real world.
My plans when I get older where like every other child's. I want to be in the NFL. To get where I am you have to start at a young age. I showed up at practice everyday and on time. I also studied the play sheets and went through all my routes. I studied day and night to be where I am. It wasn't easy. There was no time to play games get in trouble do drugs or hang out with friend on an everyday bases. You have to tighten up be a man. It's not like I woke up one day and I was starting running back I had to do what's right stay in school not miss a day because that one day could have been the most important day ever and I wouldn't have even known. You know why?? Because I was and didn't show up to school. Don't be that person I used to be.
Star Athlete’s status begins at a young age. Many athletes get their needs and wants met with the best products throughout their whole life. They are even offered many opportunities only famous athletes can receive. At the collegiate level, student-athletes are now given everything they need and want to go to school and play sports. With the privileges they are offered, they start to feel as if they are above the law and rules as well. Just this year Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was pulled over for operating a vehicle under the influence. Barrett proceeded to lie and tell the officer he had not drank any alcohol that night. After finally being arrested Barrett tells the officer “I’m the quarterback of Ohio State … officer, there’s nothing
My adrenaline coursed through my body and my nerves were at an all time high as I was finally getting to play in my first game as a Varsity Wildcat. All my hard work had led up to this moment and there was no way I was going to mess it up. The all too familiar smell of the fresh cut grass made me feel comfortable at that moment and I lined up as the strong side linebacker and got ready for the play to start. Steam filled my helmet and my breathing got gradually quicker and quicker. The quarterback hiked the ball and I knew exactly what play they were running. I threw myself into the gap I needed to and made the tackle, but as I headed to the ground there was a violent crackling in my right knee. The whistle blew again and I tried to stand up, but I couldn’t. A flurry of emotions flooded my brain: fear, anxiety, pain, sadness, regret. When the trainer got me to the bench to see what had gone, wrong he determined that I had torn my Meniscus and I would be out for the season. All my effort on the difficult, hot, summer practice all nulled from this one moment. All my aspirations of
It had been twelve days since the accident, and with every minute that had passes Jordan thinks he’s getting closer to losing his mind. His chest had constricted when he had seen her limp, doll-like form stretched out on the operating table, the beep of the machine the only thing giving any sign of her still living. The doctors’ faces had been grim, telling him that she had a chance, but it was a slim
High profile sportspeople do not deserve a second chance or any other form of special treatment when they enact inappropriate activities such as drug doping, drink driving or even murder that may or may not hold relevance to the sport itself. This is believed for a multitude of reasons; firstly, these sportspeople are seen as role models by many and by enacting such activities and then being able to swiftly evade the consequences, they are essentially purging them of the ones they look up or in the more extreme cases, giving them the incorrect mentality that what they are doing is in fact, respectable; secondly, being given this special treatment will merely lead to them being given a sense of invincibility, a sense that they
there's an emotional connection that fans make when they see their sport heroes endorsing a line of shoes. it's something that they both physically and emotionally identify with. maybe they even think in their heart of hearts that the equipment will help them play a bit better - maybe not. but consumers always seem to walk a bit taller and jump a bit higher when they get their hands on the season's newest models. they certainly claim bragging rights, according to
Everyday today's youth are asked what they want to be when they grow up. Some say teachers, firemen, police officers and a large response to that question is a professional athlete. Something that all these professions have in common is that they are all role models to children. Firemen, teachers, police officers have an easy job at doing this; they are after all the people that save children, teach children and protect children. But professional athletes on the other hand have a difficult task assigned to them when it comes to being role models. Professional athletes are not given an option as to be a role model or not. Just because they have a special gift does not make them have
