In the same way that people dress in unique styles, authors have their own unique writing; for example Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, is very fond of using juxtaposition and motif to develop sections of her novel. This preference shines through as she develops Scout’s character. Lee's use of her unique stylistic devices amplify the complexity of Scout’s character development throughout the novel.
The parallels between Harper Lee's own childhood shaped much of the story of To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout's experiences mirror those of Harper Lee in her real-life childhood. Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926, and grew up in a heavily racist environment. In the book, Scout is a few years younger than Harper Lee, and observed many of the things she did. For example, the Scottsboro Boys Trial of 1931 was very similar to the trial portrayed in To Kill a Mockingbird, and was very well-known at the time.

Every story has a unique author with a unique voice that demands to be heard, such as the case with Southern gothic authors. Harper Lee, the author of To Kill A Mockingbird, had a similar childhood as that of the female main protagonist in the story, Scout. Which is then the voice of Harper Lee, as she was a child who lived in the south part of America and experienced this first hand. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the voice is accomplished before and throughout the development of the Civil Rights Movement and the Jim Crow Laws.
Countless authors, all throughout time, can be seen to write about their passions, their experiences or their opinions on a certain topic. The question has been asked: do any of these authors early life experiences or the time setting when they grew up in have any impact on why the writer developed the work? If the aim is to find out whether early life experiences of these authors or the time setting when they grew up in promoted or influenced the development of their work, three questions must be asked for an accurate conclusion to be drawn: How heavily did the Harper Lee’s early life experiences influence her writing? Where there any government influences that impacted on the authors writing? Why exactly did the author write the text?
