“Before you can be a champion, you have to be a contender.” A contender is someone who struggles to overcome obstacles in his/ her way to achieve a goal. In order to be a contender, you have to be willing to work hard, like Thomas from The Maze Runner. Thomas is a contender as well as a Hemingway hero. Some traits he obtains is “ a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do,” endurance, and, even though it is not a Hemingway hero trait, he is brave.
In the maze, Thomas and a couple of other people were “runners” meaning that they had to try to find a way out of the maze. When they first wanted him to be a runner, he really did not want to do it. However, everyone had one goal: to find a way out. Therefore, Thomas did what he had to do and decided to accept the job. He did that because he then realized that he had to put others in front of himself, he could save the others.

He physically had to be able to keep running and searching for an exit. However, to be able to keep a steady run, he would have had to have mental endurance, as well. He could have turned back anytime he got lost or was in danger, but he kept going even when big robot spiders(grievers) were trying to kill him. Being able to do that takes a lot of bravery, which is another trait that Thomas fulfills.
Being a runner also takes a lot of bravery. First off, when you’re in the maze, most of the time the people separate from each other. When Thomas was in the maze, being alone means having only one mind to figure out which way to go or how to solve a problem. Since he was the only one there, he had to think and act fast to make life changing decisions that can lead to life or death situations. On top of all that, runners need to keep track of time because, if not, the maze doors will squish everything inside. As for the people inside, well, they will get squished as
Thomas Builds-the-Fire is character that has experiences many tragic outcomes in his life. For example, he explains that his parents both died when he was young. “My father, he died on Okinawa in World War II, died fighting for this country, which had tried to kill him for years. My mother, she died giving birth to me, died while I was still inside her. She pushed me out into the world with her last breath” (CITE). It is because of this tragedy, that he has the courage to overcome obstacles. For example, when Victor and Thomas were standing outside of the trailer that Victors dad passed away in, Victor told Thomas that he did not have to go inside, Thomas simply explained that he is going to need the help, “…. he held his breath and followed Victor into the trailer” (CITE). In this moment Thomas did not have to go into the
Courage is when you believe in yourself that you can do anything. Well, In line 270, The Odyssey stated, ‘‘Odysseus was afraid of the cyclops but had the courage to keep moving and he escaped the cyclops cave (379).
The story indicates from the beginning that"Nobody talked to Thomas anymore because he told the same damn stories over and over again, " (Alexie 280). The last vision the audience knows is to when he is with Victor's father. Thomas goes with Victor on his journey in the hope that by completing his previous vision job he can experience new visions. On achieving to help Victor on his journey Thomas, "… heard a new story come to him in the silence afterward," (Alexie 286). Completing Thomas's last vision gave him his new vision because his previous visions. Thomas resentment towards Victor for what he had done but helped him because of the promise to Victor's
He shows a lot of bravery throughout and he shows more bravery as the story enfolds. His braveness is showed near the end of the book when he is trying to save Kat. He is being brave at this part because by trying to save his friend he was risking his own life at the same time. When he is saving him, he says: "I jump up eager to help him, I take him up and start off at a run, a slow steady pace, so as not to
In his first few days in the glade, Thomas wanted to be a runner as he felt that he was meant to be a runner and he felt like he knew the maze. Minhoe and Alby went into the maze to look at a dead grevier but Alby got stung and Minhoe was struggling to bring him back into the glade and right when the maze was about to close for the night Thomas ran into the maze because he wanted to help Minhoe and Alby survive. After about a week or two of Thomas living in the glade, Thomas started to respect his elders more, doing what they asked. After Thomas went through the changing, he told the keepers everything that he remembered from the changing so that they could try and find out how to get out of the maze. Part of Thomas' plan was for him to get taken by the grievers while the rest of the Gladers went into the griever hole to try and find something that they could put the code into it to open a door to get out.

After years of schooling in America, a year of practical training for a new career, the rush for a job begins for many immigrants in the United States. For some to stay within U.S. borders they must obtain a green card, by either getting a family sponsorships, marrying a U.S. citizen, entering the diversity visa lottery, or getting a job and applying for an employment sponsorship.
When I was reading the Maze Runner I made some connections. When Thomas went out into the maze, why would he do
A universal theme conveyed in The Contender is that life is filled with obstacles; one must become a contender in order to be successful in life—as Mr. Donatelli, Alfred Brook’s trainer remarks, “Everybody wants to be a champion. That’s not enough. You have to start by wanting to be a contender” (Lipsyte 35). Though the viewers will definitely grasp the meaning of the word contender throughout the film, it is of utmost importance for them to learn its exact definition on the first scene. A contender is a person who “[struggles] to surmount a difficulty or danger” (Concise Oxford American dictionary).
Thomas, voluntarily saves one of the Glader's who was injured coming back from the maze. Consequently, in the time he saved him, he fails at getting him back home.
Everyone has the potential for courage, however, not everyone takes advantage of it. Imagine the nerd taking advantage of talking to the pretty girl in the lunch-room and compare it to not taking the chance. Similarly, in Harper Lee’s story,”To Kill a Mockingbird”, characters employ their wits in order to overcome adversity. Frankly, when used, courage can help with the impossible.

Harry stays on the trail when Ron wants to leave yelling “No Ron we have to get this done”. He shows bravery by staying in the forest when fear overtakes his body. He also shows bravery in chapter sixteen, “The chamber of secrets”, when he fights and kills the basilisk to stop Tom Riddle from killing Ginny Weasley by “Throwing his whole weight into the sword and plunging the sword into the roof of the basilisk's mouth. Those are all instances of bravery and shows just how brave Harry Potter is in the second novel, “The chamber of secrets”.
