Science in the Media: Revolution Jessica Bradley NBC’s show, Revolution explores what life might be like almost 20 years after a worldwide blackout hits North America. The blackout in Revolution was an “artificially-caused apocalyptic event occurring in September 2012” (Revolution, 2014.) This event disabled all electricity. The blackout was originally a combat test on the Taliban, but a malfunction of Nanites caused a worldwide loss of power. 15 years later, power becomes briefly restored by the main characters Rachel and Aaron. Rachel explains in the episode The Song Remains the Same that “a couple hundred quadrillion nanites about the size of a virus were everywhere, programmed to absorb electricity and replicate” (Revolution, 2014.) Meaning that all man-made forms of electricity would be disabled. In the show “the government has fallen, families must survive by harvesting their own crops, and warlords and militias run rampant armed with what was previously considered outdated weaponry” (McNeal, 2013.) This post- apocalyptic future is a terrifying rendering of what could be if an EMP were to cause world-wide destruction. An EMP sounds to most people like something out of a sci-fi novel, but Electromagnetic Pulses can be created by a large number of situations. When you Google “How could all of the power in the world shut off?” you will get mixed results ranging from ‘Earth Hour’, an effort to shut off all of the world’s power for an hour, to ‘What if China or Russia Cut
Introduction: One of the key themes of Biology 311 is the critical interplay between cell and molecular biology, medicine, business, patent law, federal regulatory agencies (e.g. FDA), defense, religion and many other aspects of our society that had little to no role in the world of cell and molecular biology as few as 10 years ago. The attached article appeared as the lead article in The Boston Globe on Sunday, August 23, 2015, and is an example of how changes in our society can affect many of the aforementioned themes. Below are questions related to this article. Some are "factual" questions that can be easily found on the internet and elsewhere; while others are
When we go more deep into this blackout, we come to know that the blackout of power in the northeast area started about at 5:16 PM. The next working day was about to start. The exact place at which this event occurred is Ontario - New York border, near Niagara Falls.
Half the time there’s no electricity. I live five miles from school and gas costs nine dollars a gallon and we can’t use the pool anymore.” (Pfeffer, 54) Miranda, through this quote, states the major problems or conflicts ongoing within their society. School is about to close because hot lunches are running out and they are now resorting to just sandwiches, gas prices are skyrocketing because oil refineries are down and transportation is very expensive, and there is no electricity because of the severe
Apocalyptic Imagine a world where there was no power. How would you survive? How would you find food? What other effects are there that you might not even think about? That is exactly what John Matherson has to deal with in the small town of Black Mountain, North Carolina when an EMP hits.
Accordingly, the city encounters blackouts throughout the book: “There had been five blackouts in a row during the week. They were all fairly short—the longest was four and a half minutes”(157). Jeanne DuPrau writes this indicating that the city is falling apart. Doon is involved in this problem by exclaiming a point to the mayor: “‘The blackouts...the lights go out all the time now!’”(13). Society is falling apart for the people because they just don’t have basic human necessities like light, power, and even canned foods. The only way they can preserve their future is through their determination. With determination, people can see the problem like Doon did and fix the problems like the generator. It can also lead to a way out, exactly what Doon and Lina
The United States of America, the world’s policeman. This nation is number one in the world right now. We have the strongest military to ever have been devised. The U.S.A. is the technology capital of the world. Our citizens, rarely face starvation. Our food production system is the largest on the globe, providing for millions here and abroad. Our electricity, reaches to all of our cities, lighting our country up every night. Now, while we may be number one, rest assured there will be enemies of us. There is always someone who wants to pick a fight with the world champion. Rather it be a fully formed nation or a rising religious cult. We may be strong, powerful, and wealthy, but that does not mean there are no flaws, no achilles heel of America. Of all of those wonderful things I said above about this nation, each can effectively be shut down by a simple piece of weaponry; the EMP device. Our whole grid, infrastructure, and commerce would be halted in a matter of seconds. The America we know and love today could easily be lost forever. In seeing how vulnerable we are, with our dependence on electronics and transportation, we must take the necessary precautions to prevent an EMP from getting into the wrong hands.
The disruptive nature of a national blackout would wreak havoc on the social services that are there to protect us. In the 1965 Great North East Blackout, over 30 million people were affected by a massive blackout.(Salazar, 2017) Imagine the damage a nationwide blackout would do in our present day and age, with the US population at approximately 323 million, a nationwide black out would prove cataclysmic to our social order. Looting and chaos have commonly ensued when black outs have occurred, even in outages lasting little over 24 hours as in the case of the 1977 New York City blackout. (Latson,
Mollie, I really enjoyed your post. It amazes me how many people do not always recognize the value of the nurse until they are impacted by one first-hand. As with so many other topics, the media can easily distort the true meaning and purpose of so many things. After the incident on the View with Joy Behar, I was rejoiced by the out-pour of support for the nursing profession by so many. Nurses united as one and demanded respect for what they do. As more advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) provide direct care for patients, the community can observe first hand the excellent care a mastered-prepared nurse can give. This will help promote the nursing profession.
The impacts of a high-level EMP on the electric grid are still not fully understood, but are being
On September 16 hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico straight on. When the hurricane hit they lost power. They had no clue how long the power would be out. Could you imagine being in your house with no power what would you be thinking. “In a matter of hours, Hurricane Maria wiped out about 80 percent of the crop value in Puerto
Revolution - This show ran 2012-2014, but you can still catch it if you’ve got Netflix. Based in a world where the power is out and life has changed everywhere, it’s as much about the relationships between the survivors as it is about the events that continue to unfurl as the show goes on. It’s fast-paced, and the surprise reason why the power can’t be turned on is smart, interesting, and not at all run-of-the-mill. The acting is good, which I require of any show I’m going to watch for more than, say, one episode. I have very little patience for time-wasters, okay?
Additionally, a damaged mindset and perception of women often interferes with the mental and psychological well-being of the individual since they are regarded lowly in society. An example of this is the display of a nude woman or a scantily dressed female on the cover page of a magazine. Much as this is used as a sexual appeal strategy to woo more customers to their products. It is defamatory as it reduces women to being viewed as sexual objects by people in society. Moreover, one who has been sexually abused or discriminated against in society often faces low self-esteem as their beauty has been compromised. It is for this reason that, all people should be treated equally if they are to enjoy a psychologically sound mindset as well as fit in well with society.
In the spring of 1918, the first wave of one of the deadliest influenza pandemics began plaguing its victims (Peters, ix). Over the span of three lethal waves, the pandemic claimed approximately forty million victims, eradicating nearly twenty percent of the entire world’s population, or about one out of five individuals (Peters, ix). To make matters more dire, the ill-suited medical community was exceptionally unprepared for such a wide-scale pandemic: Doctors had very basic tools, knew little about diseases, and had no experience with vaccinations or prevention (Peters, 1-5; “The 1920s: Medicine and Health: Overview”, n.p.). People blindly faced the epidemic, relying on folk remedies such as consuming wine, drinking antiseptic, and
In today’s medical field technology plays a big role when it comes to patient care. Technology is huge when it comes to giving the patient the best type of quality care when they are in the hospital. In the old days people would just write it down on a sheet of paper and record it by hand, which caused mistakes. Now with the Electronic Health Record those mistakes are drastically declining. Statistics have shown that using the Electronic Health Record has lowered Nursing mistakes as well as improved patient care. Our society has progressed through the years and has been introduced with the Electronic Health Record which has drastically improved our health care system. The Electronic Health Record provides great communication between
What do you think about social media? Social media is place where we can communication with another people, like our family and friends. Social media can be use when there is internet, if you do not have any connection to the internet you can not use it. Actually, social media is a really good innovation in this period because we still can communicate even we are far away. And social media can make who far away more closer, then make us feeling like there is no border between us. Let’s discuss social media more deeper about social media.
