On October 31, 1517, a plump, young professor & Augustinian monk named Martin Luther (1483-1546) tacked/nailed a list of 95 complaints about the Catholic Church on the doors of the Wittenberg Cathedral. Written in Latin, the complaints were mostly attacking the doctrine of indulgences. Indulgences were forgiveness of punishment for sins, usually obtained either through good works or prayers along with the payment of an appropriate sum of money. Martin Luther was a monk who was deeply involved in the church and when he heard about the wrong doings of the church, he decided to confront them. Luther began writing multiple bishops about an intervention however, neither the bishops or the Pope responded because they were only interested in the money power. As a result, Luther wrote the “95 Theses” elaborating on ninety-five ways the Catholic church could change their teachings.

When thinking about the historical events that are associated with the reformation movement that can be traced back to the late 1300s and early 1400s with men like John Wycliffe, The Lollards, and Jan Hus (Men who rejected the Divine origin of the Roman Catholic Church and the alleged authority of the Pope) I can't help but feel the table had been set, that is, the conditions were perfect for Martin Luther's placing of the ninety-five theses on the church door at Wittenberg in 1517. By God's providence Luther was to undertake the most difficult task of returning the church to its intended authority - The Scriptures. Luther understood as well as anyone the sad state of affairs as it related to the Church, the Papacy, its politics and the increasing corruption of the sale of indulgences to his fellow countrymen.

People became wealthier and had more money to spend. People began to build much bigger houses and buy more expensive clothes and people became more interested in the art and liturature.
