Education allows for people to have both understanding and greater control over their own lives. Lack of knowledge can quickly lead one down the road of fear, frustration, and confusion. Furthermore, the stress over past and future events can cause detrimental effects both mentally and physically. To avoid such pitfalls, one should build a secure foundation of knowledge to enable oneself to preserve a healthy mental and physical state.

In modern day society people chase after the belief that knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have the higher you are viewed in the food pyramid of society. But in my opinion I don’t believe so. Defined by the dictionary, “knowledge is facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject”, and the way we receive our knowledge today through the education system provides greater opportunities to those who are powerful and rich while discriminating those who cannot afford to pay for the price of knowledge. Two influential works of literature that support this belief are “Blue Collar Brilliance” and “Hidden Intellectualism.”

There is something powerful about knowledge. Knowledge makes one know things that they did not know before. It helps them gain insight about issues that are seen in the world. It opens up eyes to see things through a different perspective, a perspective that they never thought of or seen without getting a gaining an understanding of that certain type of knowledge. Knowledge helps one make decisions and how to handle certain situations. Knowledge allows one to succeed in school and get acceptable grades, discern what is right and wrong, and leads to wisdom. When knowledge is limited; children and society are being naïve and lazy, people are not able to express the freedom of speech that is possible in this nation, and it ruins countries.

Think about if you were a child living in Sudan. You were born and raised there and didn’t have a clue about the qualities of the universe. How would your life be different? How would your mind be different? You may simply answer as, “I don’t really know.” Now think about how your life is in America, and all the things you do know about the universe. Many of you may think that school is a waste of time and it’s boring and you’ll never use anything the teachers teach us. But to me, those remarks reign entirely false.
