The minimalistic and modern painting by Caspar David Friedrich called The Monk By The Sea is a luring piece of art from over 200 years ago. ‘Modern’ and ‘200 years ago’ do not generally go together well, but what Friedrich achieved in this painting still invites the lovers of simplicity to see a deeper meaning in the current times. Friedrich’s uses simplicity to show a complex meaning in the painting The Monk By The Sea. Influenced by the relationship with God, nature, and Friedrich’s own personal life, he expresses this complex meaning through the composition of color, lines, and technique.

Subconsciously authors tend to write their personal life experiences in their writer. Just as a psychologist would analyze a patient by asking them questions. With brief research of the author and the use of their story, one may analyze them just like a psychologist would. Hills like white Elephants by Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism to demonstrate important life decisions and the consequences behind them. He mentions the phrase “white elephants,” a white elephant is interpreted as a gift that is given to someone, but not just any gift it's a gift that is not wanted and hard to dispose of. For instance, if given an expensive car such as a Lamborghini, and the responsibilities falls on you to pay the insurance and upkeep on it. Knowing how expensive the insurance will be you know you would not be able to afford it it is then when the car becomes the white elephant forcing you to sell the car.

Narratives have massive importance in the driving of big ideas about how we view our world. They use many different techniques, to either subtly or plainly plant ideas into our minds. The author can point out big problems in our world, and by making it relevant to the consumer, lead them to think more about what is going on around them. They can turn something that doesn’t make sense to someone and by changing something very simple, make it more relevant.
As a derivative of language, stories help to combine key aspects of wisdom so we can continue to improve greatly as a species. The third group discussed how our stories are a reflection of who we are, whether personal or general as explored in Thomas King`s essay `The Truth About Stories`. In particular, they are used to define our identity as we attach ourselves to characters that are exhibited in similar circumstances. Furthermore, personal stories render us in a state of vulnerability so we can question cryptic thoughts that are not recognized often. As said by group 3, “Stories help to escape, comfort and answer questions”. General stories such as the theory of creation help establish societies and environments by providing meaning to our existence. King highlights the importance of strategic storytelling by informing the reader to “not confuse strategy with sophistication” as the significance of the truth can be
Short stories are seemingly a lost art amongst the literary community. Legendary writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, Flannery O’Connor, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and many more have paved the way for writers such as Ha Jin and Phil Klay who write today. Now, although one could speak on the importance of each of these tremendous writers, the focus in paper will be on two writings being that of Flannery O’Connor’s, “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” and Ha Jin’s, “Under The Red Flag”. For every activity one does, time is very important for the activity. In stories, chronology is especially important for it helps the reader understand what is happening but also gains a message from it. Chronological order is part of the plot diagram in any story where the story begins which takes the reader to rising action. The author of Elephant, Slawomir Mrozek and the author of The Secret Lost in the Water, Roch Carrier showed how chronology is very important to the story. These authors used different themes to portray chronology. This can be demonstrated through the loss of faith, psychology of believing and through appearance vs reality. Therefore, variations of chronology have been shown.
“An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind” says Mahatma Gandhi as he explains his views on conflicts and their outcomes. Gandhi is explaining how someone has to be generous and kind; otherwise conflicts will arise and make the situation worse. One has to make the best of it and drop it. In the readings “Because my Father…”, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, they each have multiple conflicts that contribute to the final conclusion of each story. Although each stories’ conflicts vary in theme to entertain the readers, these three short stories have unique conflicts that entice the readers.
