The Naturalist known as Theodore Dreiser
Throughout history there has been many great authors that have created even greater works, and some people refer to these as classics. However, what truly makes an authors’ work a classic? “The idea of a classic implies something that has continuance and consistence, and which produces unity and tradition, and transmits itself, and endures.” “A true classic, is an author who has expressed his thought, and who has spoken to all in his own peculiar style” (Hutchins). Theodore Dreiser is the epitome of this very definition. Dreiser drew upon his upbringing, life experiences, and the situations of his family members and transformed these collective experiences into his very first novel, “Sister

Much like many of his other themes and symbols, this one also came as a result of his experiences, most notably his childhood. Before he was born, his father owned a mill that eventually burned down. This event caused him to turn into a cynical, bitter man who abused and tortured his family mentally. This led to Dreiser coming to the conclusion that “man is a pawn in the hands of a blind or malevolent fate” (Warren 11). This idea of fate can be further explained as Dreiser accepting that no one can change the future and whatever is meant to happen to them will happen, whether it be good or bad. This quote shows him coming to grips with the idea of human suffering, which he later in life proves to be true in his quest for achievement in the big industrial cities. Blind fate exists heavily in the “Sister Carrie” and can be a positive or negative thing. For example, the main character Carrie becomes an immensely successful person while trying simply because of fate (where she and others happen to be at certain times). Another example is George Hurstwood who cheated on his wife and subsequently abandoning her by having an affair with Carrie (Dreiser). Blind fate plays its hand here by eventually leading to Hurstwood’s suicide after being abandoned by Carrie, much like he abandoned his wife and child. This is an example of blind fate simply because it was by chance that he met Carrie and ultimately because of that same chance that
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an ant? Author of "The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher" Lewis Thomas, has. In his essay, he compares ants to humans. He has a theory that they are very similar. I believe this comparison is accurate one because both humans and ants act similar in the way they live, both are a stronger force when they work together, and both have a nature to cause destruction.
A classic literary work has been defined as a work "that lasts through generations because of its universality of theme, ageless symbolism, word choice and the ordering of detail." A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway should be considered a classic literary work due to the universal themes, ageless symbolism, word choice, and story detail.
Bernard Malamud was brought up in the mid 1900s, a time period when baseball played a huge role in the lives of many Americans. Americans loved baseball because it gave them a chance to stop working and simply relax while they cheered on their favorite team. It was a time when people played baseball solely for the love of the game and the thrill of hearing the fans cheer for them. Today, however, baseball is much more corrupt, and many athletes are only in it due to their own greed and selfishness. This strong desire for money stems from some important players in the past, such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, who were outstanding athletes and grew very overconfident in their abilities. They became so confident that they began to demand
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau was very close author who wrote towards same points by criticizing the corrupted government because people were treated very badly and they were not given individual rights. They were good author who brought people together and made them understand about the system of the Transcendentalist movement in America. The governor and government itself was very poor to control the people and society due to corrupted leaders and government. Due to economic progress and poor system of government Emerson started criticizing government indirectly and wrote the poem about nature and society because maximum people could not enjoy the same facilities and freedom. But his intension was very clear and he wants to
A much more accurate definition was coined by Louise Cowan, a former chairmen of the English department at the university of Dallas. Louise Cowan defines a classic as a book that, “Portrays life as complex and many sided, depicting both negative and positive aspects of human character in the process of discovering

What does it mean for a book to be a classic? When something is a classic, it has been judged over a long period of time and come to be considered one of the best of its kind. So a classic book is one that has tested time, teaches a lesson, entertains many audiences, and changes your perspective or values after reading the book. Some examples of classic books would be Moby Dick, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Hobbit. The Maltese Falcon, an exceptional book written by Dashiell Hammett, is filled with mystery, crime, and adventure. The Maltese Falcon should be a classic because the characters are very interesting, it makes the reader reconsider the acts of good and bad, and it was one of the first unique detective books.
In this day in age, classics range from movies such as Titanic, to books such as Moby Dick, or even television shows such as I Love Lucy. But what does that mean? What even makes something “classic”? The definition of classic includes descriptions like “traditional”, “enduring quality”, “literary work of the first rank”. So what makes these works of art timeless or classic? Herman Melville, a classic author himself, stated that “To produce a mighty book you must choose a mighty theme.” Theme, in literature, is the main idea or underlying message of the book. The reason why theme is, in my opinion, the quality that makes a story classic is because it reaches the reader intellectually and emotionally. Good themes, more often than not, churn
What makes a novel a “timeless classic?” There are differing opinions on this topic. But having a significant theme is a criterion that often comes up, and interesting, well-rounded characters are also important. Theme and characterization are essential for any good book because they give the novel depth; a timeless classic should exceed in both these areas. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee should be considered a timeless classic; not only does it have an important, universal theme, but it also has round, compelling characters that effectively communicate the theme.
Death of naturalist This poem is a fertile mixture of imagery, sounds and an impression created by nature on people’s mind. Heaney sensualises an outstanding fear of the physical wonders of the world. He vividly describes his childhood experience that precipitates his change as a boy from the receptive and protected innocence of childhood to the fear and uncertainty of adolescence. As he wonders along the pathways of salient discovery, Heaney’s imagination bursts into life.
A classic is a learning experience, a book that has you truly entranced and mesmerized by its story. That is what I think when I think of a classic. I also think that book cant be judged as a classic because they have “book of the year” or win any award. Universal Truth • Taking away people’s choices will not make them happier. • Memories are important and make us who we are.
When most people think of the word classic they think of something that is old but also great. I don’t think that is necessarily true. Classic to me means timeless. Something that holds value indefinitely. Something that doesn’t go out of style. Something that is one of a kind. Classics have a quality about them that makes them unique and long lasting. Books can be considered classics because the stories that they tell continue to teach valuable lessons over time. Regardless of the current time the stories are still relatable and relevant. For example, George Orwell’s book Animal Farm is written as what seemingly is a story about the lives of farm animals, but in reality the story has a deeper meaning involving political issues.
