The Navajo, also known as the Diné, are one of the largest Native American Tribes in the world. The Red Nation article “Considering a Navajo Name Change: Self-Identification, Land, and Liberation” by Majerle Lister states that “‘Navajo’ is not a Diné word or concept, despite its use as our [the Diné] official name for more than a hundred and fifty years.” This is a clear example of how settler colonialism has impacted the Navajo Nation. Settler colonialism has had an impact in the Peoplehood matrix of the Navajo from language and sacred history to place/territory and ceremonial cycles, yet it has not stop efforts from the Navajo Community to mend the damage that settler colonialism has had on their culture over the years.

One aspect to be respected and understood, about American Indians, is their history and culture dates back much farther than Americans in US history. Consequently, the relationship developed between American Indians and the United States is as unique as it is complicated. This unique relationship started because the American Indians were the first faces seen by fresh colonials from Europe. Despite this fact, the American Indians have faced cultural appropriation on a level that cannot be compared to any other ethnic group or minority. Any American who has been through kindergarten can associate Indians and Pilgrims with Thanksgiving, but how many of those Americans know of the Battle of Little Bighorn or the Alcatraz Proclamation? It is this lack of awareness that has created continued injustice allowing American Indian culture to be exploited. For the only culture native to this country to be so trivially appropriated, for centuries, is disgraceful.
