People who are driven by greed end up focusing on what they do not have instead of being grateful for what they do have. In The Necklace, the setting of Paris in the late 19th century is a world of elegance and wealth. If not born into a wealthy family, one would have two options: marry into a wealthy family, or stay in their social class. That is just the case for Mathilde Loisel, who is endowed with beauty but born into a family of clerks. She was born free and could have had a plentiful life because of her beauty. However, she was held back by the chains of her social status and forced to marry her wealthy husband Monsieur Loisel. Together they have an awkward relationship consisting only of their need for marriage.

In “The Necklace,” Guy De Maupassant describes Mathilde Loisel a middle class woman who desperately wishes to be a part of the luxurious life, one night her dreams come true at a ministerial ball but at a terrible cost that put Mathilde in poverty. Similarly, in “The Ways We Lie,” Stephanie Ericsson explains that we should consider the meaning of our actions, such as deception and lies. The extent of omitting a fact is when there is risky consequences that can harm people. It is wrong when omission of facts is a lie because conflicts arise when the truth is hidden by completely turning a person's life upside. Although the omission of facts is easier than to face the truth, I claim that the omission of facts is wrong because failing to tell the truth leads to painful consequences. Additionally, I believe both Maupassant and Ericsson agree that it is wrong to omit facts as a lie when serious consequences is a result, hence Mathilde is forced to waste ten years of her life because of a lie; similarly when Ericsson describes the omission of facts is a lie when a lie gives a false impression and is purposefully meant to deceive.

Her husband labored evenings to balance a tradesman’s accounts, at night, often, he copied documents at five sous a page. And this went on for 10 years (Maupassant 10).” Mme. Loisel’s hubris created her into what she despised most. She put her and he husband into the situation of having to work really hard to pay off the necklace.

In the story The Necklace (Maupassant) Mathilde Loisel is a poverty stricken beautiful women, who gets to go to a ball with her husband. But with being poor her pride gets the best of her. Meaning, she wants a expensive ball gown for husband to buy her but, she can't have a ball gown without a necklace, so she borrows a necklace from her very high end friend. As the night of the ball come to an end Loisel realizes that her friends diamond necklace is missing and now she has to work everyday for the rest of her life just to pay the necklace off. With that being said Loisel has many personality conflict which only interfere with life story. Loisel would be considered pushy because she pushed her husband to buy her a new fancy dress and she also would be considered rueful because of all the regret she had in her life when she lost the diamond necklace.

Madame Loisel’s Change Throughout “The Necklace” In the beginning of “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, Madame Loisel is a young woman who is born beautiful and fair. Then, at the end of the story she became old and tough which was caused by their shortage of money. She changed a lot throughout the story because of the burden of the necklace, but when she was young she took her life for granted.

The internal conflicts established in “The Necklace” were a result of Madame Loisels perception of happiness. Because of her ungrateful and dejected views on life, she didn’t realize nor recognize true merriment. Madame Loisel’s pride demands more: “It annoys me not to have a single jewel, not a single stone, nothing to put on. I shall look like distress” (Maupassant 2). Ironically, it is Monsieur Loisel who suggests that his wife borrow jewelry from Madame Forestier, and subsequently has to spend the next ten years borrowing money to replace it. As May puts it, “Her husband exhausts his meager inheritance and then borrows the rest, mortgaging their life away to buy a replacement for the necklace” (May 7). Monsieur Loisel sacrifices everything to salvage his wife’s pride.

According to the narrator in “The Necklace,” Madame Loisel has a low middle-class economic status which causes her agony. Madame Loisel focuses on her inability to maintain a luxurious lifestyle. She feels, “that all the attributes of a gracious life, every luxury, should rightfully have been hers” (de Maupassant 333). She cares more about her wants rather than her needs while thinking she deserves a wealthy lifestyle. Madame Loisel’s selfish personality cannot compare to Della’s humble disposition.

Her persistent mindset of wanting and needing more, is how her internal conflict developed. All of Madame Loisel’s issues relate back to her internal fascination with becoming incredibly rich and valued by her peers. The text states, “She had longed so eagerly to charm, to be desired, to be wildly attractive and sought after.” (1) Madame Loisel’s mindset was simply set on materialistic things and being respected amongst her peers. Even throughout the years, her idea of ‘perfection’ never changed a bit. The story reads, “But sometimes, when her husband was at the office, she sat down by the window and thought of that evening long ago, of the ball at which she had been so beautiful and so much admired.” (5) Ten hard and stressful years later, Madame Loisel is still under the impression that everything she has must be beautiful and valued. This situation expresses irony because although she is beautiful, she still feels a desire to receive expensive things. The text states, “She was one of those pretty and charming girls born, as though fate had blundered over her, into a family of artisans… She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury.” (1) Although she is beautiful

Money and wealth isn't everything. Madame Loisel from The Necklace by Guy Maupassant has to learn that the hard way. Madame Loisel is a woman who feels entitled to a lavish lifestyle. She is a character who is dissatisfied with her current lifestyle even though she has a caring husband who provides her with everything he can. Madame Loisel is invited to an elaborate party in which she feels she needs a beautiful gown and a diamond necklace. In order for Madame Loisel to attend the party her husband gives her 500 Francs and she borrows a very expensive diamond necklace. After the Loisels attend the party they realize that they have lost the necklace and now their lifestyle must change dramatically so that they can pay to replace the necklace. The Loisels both work very hard for the next ten years to pay back the money they borrowed to replace the necklace. Madame Loisel realizes what a comfortable life she had and how her greed got the best of her. Leading her to a life of misery and hard labor to replace the diamond necklace. Madame Loisel is a complex character because she is both round and dynamic.

In the first place, Mathilde Loisel from “The Necklace”, a woman who undoubtedly was a victim of her envy and ambition. Mrs. Loisel was a woman who lived in a poor place who never settled with what she had. As a result, her envy led her to lose the little things that she owns. Mrs. Loisel, lost her life in things she thought were more important. Mr. Loisel was confused to believe that luxury and wealth could bring happiness into her life. To which she was wrong and ended up losing her youth and strength, trying to pay something which was fake.

But he said: ‘Very well. I will give you four hundred francs. And try to have a pretty gown’” (3). This generosity, in consequence, makes Madame Loisel become even more spoiled. Madame Loisel’s unhappiness, in turn, causes Monsieur Loisel to become even more adulating, as he not only pays for her dress, but also allows her to dance with other men while he sleeps in the anteroom instead of his own home. Finally, Monsieur Loisel’s suggestion to lie to Madame Forestier about the necklace causes Madame Loisel to become strong and hard-working in order to pay off their debt, “Thereafter Madame Loisel knew the horrible existence of the needy. She bore her part, however, with sudden heroism. That dreadful debt must be paid. She would pay it” (8). These mutual changes in response to the other’s flaws, such as Madame Loisel becoming more hedonistic as her husband becomes more sycophantic and Madame Loisel
