The Need for Education in Order to be Successful in the American Society

The need for education in order to be successful in the American society has increased dramatically over the past century. Even more so, the type of education needed has changed decade from decade. Unfortunately, the school system hasn’t been keeping pace, and a system based in the 1920’s isn’t getting the job done. Policies created to crutch the failing system aren’t doing their job efficiently to keep up with the demands and changes in society. Over 54,000,000 children are enrolled in some schooling (K-12), and that will continue to increase (PBS). Many of these children live impoverished and unable to escape. Historically, minorities and lower class children have not been receiving the education they are legally entitled to. An education system should be able to provide poor children the tools to become successful, however the system does the opposite and builds upon their condition creating a large gap between the poor and the rest of society. This gap continues to grow with more schooling and leaves lower class children and poor school districts behind. To better understand the education system in America, looking at how it was created shows a clearer picture.
