Abstract
Assimilation is often assumed to be the only way for immigrants to integrate themselves into the local culture. However, assimilation has many harmful impacts because it implies that the host or dominant culture must be the standard of values, beliefs, behaviors, and perceptions. This creates many harmful impacts and fails to take advantage of the value and benefits of minority cultures. These impacts are included, but not limited to loss of cultural identity, and cultural bereavement. The local culture is also negatively impacted by this as it loses the benefits of the positive traditions and practices of minority cultures. Acculturation provides a better format for integration in a manner that allows the immigrant to retain many aspects of their original culture, while still integrating with the local culture. Such acceptance of diversity is reflected in scripture. After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands (Revelation 7:9, New International Version).
The Negative Impact of Immigrant Assimilation Star Trek fans are well acquainted with the Borg, the discomforting enemy of the Federation, who takes over new cultures by telling them “you will be assimilated!” Assimilation is often considered to be a necessity when it comes to immigration, but
This article shows different levels immigrants assimilate in America. Some are grasp white customs, some grasp black customs,
After numerous years, immigration in the United States still remains one of the most controversial topics that keeps any one politician as busy as a beaver. In fact, immigration is a very broad topic which can be derived from an extensive amount of viewpoints. For instance, immigration can be viewed from the economical, safety, population, and even language standpoint. For some, immigration is portrayed as beneficial to the country by helping retain global talent, increasing diversity, and opening up new ideas. Although that is true, the effect of immigration is more detrimental to the United States due to the fact that immigration creates numerous issues, as well as consequences to those issues, in the workforce. Among these issues include communication barriers between the employee and customer, decreasing wages, and increasing job competition; and of the consequences include utilizing an immense amount of America’s few resources such as the welfare system.
strongly presents the case that although there are no direct teachings on immigration in the New Testament, Christians can learn how to treat immigrants. Jesus’s attitudes and actions help to show Christians how to treat outsiders, like immigrants. Just as Jesus transcended cultural differences and accepted Samaritans, Christians should accept immigrants. Today it is clear that Christians should embrace the ideals of the New Testament, rather than Romans 13, because it allows them to follow biblical teachings. Therefore, I believe it is important for Christians to help immigrants by embracing the New Testament ideals seen through Jesus’s own actions and
Since the start of our country, America has been known as a land of immigrants, a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities working towards the American motto of the land of the free, home of the brave. Since colonial times, immigrants have been an integral part of society, majorly contributing to U.S culture and economy, yet many Americans have always had very conflicting ideas on immigration. Many people look past the benefits immigrants bring to our economy and society and instead scapegoat them for many of the United States’ problems surrounding unemployment and budget. The positive effects of immigrants, both legal and undocumented, in our country far outweighs the negative effects because of their important impact on society and the economic help that American relies on.
As spoken in class, immigration is a serious issue that is still being fought over today. After watching the short video on Diane Guerrero and her incident with her parents getting deported, I was shocked when I heard that she was left alone after her parents were taken away. It is sad to hear such tragedy when there is children involve. When Diane’s parents were deported, she was only fourteen, she was still too young to live on her own, since she was young, she had to depend on strangers, neighbors, and friends for everything. At that age no child should be left alone, a social worker should have came into the home to search for any family members that were left behind. If she did not have her friends and neighbors helping her out, she would have ended up in the streets, when they kick her out for not paying rent.
Immigration is a complex process that results in a transformation of identity. Depending on contextual, individual, and societal differences this transformation can have either positive or detrimental results. Initially, the immigrant will be faced with an intense culture shock while settling into a new country. During this time, cognitive functioning becomes increasingly jumbled amidst the new context, resulting in immense identity confusion. This process of acculturation involves two specific issues regarding identity for each individual. These two issues include the delicate balance between remaining ethnically distinct by retaining their cultural identity and the desire to maintain positive relations with the new society. A variety of
In evaluating the fiscal benefit and cost of immigration in the long-run and its interaction with the economic and demographic trends, the National Research Council (NRC) came out with a study of immigration in 1997 in regards to the overall fiscal impact and benefit in all levels of government. The NRC study results showed that immigrants including their descendants would have a positive turnout on the fiscal impact with a present discounted value of 80 thousand dollars per immigrant in 1996. The dollar amount increased with immigrants who had higher skills with an average of 198,000 dollars and a negative amount of (-13,000) for immigrants who had less than a high school degree (The White House, President George W. Bush, 2007). The NRC concluded
Through hardship and labor, immigrants have overcome barriers of which they were imposed and denied many rights. Though many have argued that immigrants cause more harm to the economy than good, others state that “immigrants assimilate into the U.S. Labor Force well, and distribute labor roughly evenly” (Carliner). A great example would be how immigrants participate in the labor force at an increasing rate more than that of Americans (Toosi, 39). That being said, “the highest labor force growth rate over the 2008-18 period will be that of Hispanics, projected at 2.9 percent annually” (Toossi, 49). Apart from assimilation into the U.S. Labor Force, immigrants also have strong inter connected social ties from which they benefit giving each
During the start of America, immigration was a common occurrence. These immigrants had a better life here and were given many great things such as a large social life, free schooling and good communities.
It’s time to change America’s negative views on immigrants and minorities. Illegal immigration has increasingly become an unfavorably concern in America. People are blaming, judging, discriminated immigrants for their ethnicity without information about the person. We live in one world with so many colors around us.
“An immigrant is a person who legally comes to a country to take up permanent residence. An “illegal” immigrant is a person who does so without following the established legal procedures of the destination country and who resides in that country without proper visas or other documents.” (source 1)Illegal immigration is changing the lives of many Americans today, and although all illegal immigrants are not bad and are not here by choice, or to hurt anyone, it still affects us each and every day. Illegal immigration has been a problem for many years, and it seems as if it is impossible to control, but according to former mayor Rudy Giuliani of New York it can be controlled. Giuliani stated
Refugee issue is a global issue mainly due to wars, conflicts or environmental, political, religious and racial reasons (Gibney & Gil, 2010). In recent years, the turmoil triggered by the "Arab Spring" in many countries in West Asia and North Africa causing numerous refugees, so it has once again attracted the attention of people(Grossman, 2017). People forced to relocate their homes and even renounce their nationality by war or natural disasters are defined as refugee(UNHCR,2017).The influx of refugees brings cheap labor forces reducing the cost of productions ,and causes the promotion of economic development. In addition, the increasing population leads to an increase in demand which can increase the income of the host countries and the state tax. It can be argued that refugees are unable to benefit the host nations because refugees increase unemployment rate and occupy resources in education. Although it may be true that there are some negative effects caused by refugees, refugees can benefit the host nation in terms of economy and social advancement.
For decades immigrants to America were sure of two things. They came for the opportunity to build a better life for their families and they would not seek nor would they accept a handout. The drive and attitude of immigrants who came to America during the nineteen twenties through the nineteen sixties built strong work ethics that created our now famous American melting pot. But for the past thirty years a runaway welfare state has poisoned our good intentions. Well meaning but misguided entitlement programs gave billions of dollars in free handouts to a deluge of new immigrants as the floodgates opened and annual immigration levels more than tripled. The effects of this mass migration
There were four acculturation strategies that was proposed for minority migrants, depending on their level of cultural awareness: (a) assimilation occurs when individuals abandon their cultural identity in favour of adopting the new culture, (b) marginality occurs when individuals abandon their cultural identity and yet have little interest in adopting the new culture, (c) integration occurs when individuals maintain their cultural identity as well as adopting some characteristics of the new culture, and (d) separation occurs when individuals maintain their original cultural identity and do not adopt the new culture (Heggins & Jackson,
Immigrants have been coming to America since the start of this country. However, there is a fine line between an illegal and legal immigrant. Although most immigrants come here in search of a better life for themselves, they do not think about the consequences the rest of the country must fac. Since they are not citizens, they do not receive some of the benefits that an American citizen has, including health care and public schooling. Although they do not have these benefits, they continue receive treatments at hospitals and attend schools, which Americans cannot afford. Illegal immigrants affect the United States’ economy, health care system, and education system in a negative way.
