The Negative Sides Of The Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was the longest and most controversial war that involved the United States and it greatly impacted the United States. Some even compare this war to that of the United States’ involvement in Afghanistan. The Vietnam War lasted from November 1, 1955 until April 30, 1975. It was a cold war that took place in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Lao. North Vietnam backed by the Soviet Union was on one side against the opposing side of South Vietnam backed by the US, Philippines, and other non-communist countries. Between 1960 and 1973, many antiwar movements in the United States arose which consisted of many people who were united in the common cause to resist the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. They strongly believed that a war in Vietnam was clearly unjust and led to the United States’ decision to eventually withdrawn its troops from the war.

The Vietnam War began in 1954 after years of conflict stretching back to the 1940s between the communist regime of North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was attempting to make South Vietnam a communist country; since we are a democracy, the United States opposes the views of communist countries, and because we feared the spread of communism the United States became involved as an ally of South Vietnam. The war ended in 1975, resulting in disastrous effects on Vietnam and America. The assertion of the United States in this war rose controversy among Americans, and I disagree with our involvement in the Vietnam War because of the United States’ reasons to fight.

Due to the My Lai massacre which killed hundreds of innocent and unarmed Vietnamese civilians, protests about the draft start all over the country, because of draft dodgers and draft deferment, and the government misleading people back home, this was known as the credibility gap, Americans are turning against the war in Vietnam. United States soldiers came up with strategies to kill off the Vietcong, but occasionally the United States was not sure who were Vietcong and who were not. Napalm was a jellied gasoline that explodes when dropped in large canisters the napalm was usually dropped on villages. When the napalm was dropped on the villages, the Vietnamese houses and vegetation were destroyed. Napalm burned men, women, and children who were in the villages the clothes would burn completely off their bodies. The Vietnam War was perhaps one of the most controversial and disputed wars in American history. Initially sparked by a communist uprising in northern Vietnam, the war quickly became a scramble for the containment of communism by America and other anti-communist nations. After the communists in North Vietnam defeated the French and relinquished their control over the country, a now independent Vietnam split into two opposing sides, with South Vietnam fighting alongside numerous anti-communist nations in a struggle to prevent the spread of communism. During what seemed to be the final stages of the war, efforts were made to restore peace and temporarily appease North and South Vietnam until some more solid decisions could be made about the fate of the country. These efforts included the Geneva Accords, which were later thwarted, and the signing of the Paris Peace Accords.

The United States involvement in the Vietnam War was practically pointless, and very unnecessary. The cons out way the pros for waging war, because it left our country far devastated than the victorious. It drained the United States economically, and caused tremendous amounts of casualties that soon shifted the nation against the war, leaving no public support for the continuous war raging for two decades. The US should be criticized for its involvement in the war, not praised.

US should not have been involved in the Vietnam War. For one, the US should not have been involved in the Vietnam war because protest were turning violent. They started peaceful and then they turned violent. Movements and protest are now violent because the American Society feels as if their opinions are being ignored or do not matter. Another reason that people don't trust the government now is because of the propaganda and false advertising. The president is telling the people of the US that everything is okay and the war is almost over when it is nowhere near being over. Lastly, war is very costly. The money going to cover the cost of war could be given to innovations, welfare, housing, and many other beneficial things to the people of the US.

The Vietnam war was a very important war to the United States. There are some people that are for the war but a lot of people that were against the war. I was opposed to this war. The three things that were negative about the war was the use of Napalm, underground trails and boobytraps, and draft cards.

The decades of both the 1960s and 1970s were tumultuous decades. Protests, violence, activist movements, war, and more marked these decades, and within this time period and lingering still after, the American people grew to distrust their government. While there were many factors that led people to distrust the government, a few very important factors to this distrust were the Vietnam War, the Watergate Scandal, and President Gerald Ford’s pardoning of Richard Nixon. Some other negatives are Agent Orange. Agent Orange is a chemical the US used to destroy plant life in the jungle and destroy food supply. It also had a delayed effect on the soldiers and people near it, causing cancer and birth defects in the natives. Napalm was really bad because it burned people alive, sometimes landing on our people and napalm does not come off it has to burn off. The Vietcong were really dangerous, they know the jungle inside and out and where masters in jungle traps and gorilla warfare which our soldiers didnt know, which got alot killed. The Vietnam War was not our war, we were in terrain we didn't know and a war we didn't know how to fight, we didn't even have full permission to be there. My Lai massacre is where the government leaders gave orders to kill entire villages to kill out the Vietcong which would hide in small farm villages. Vietnam during the 1950s through the 1970s was a horrifically dangerous war zone that one would not even wish involvement upon their worst enemy. The Vietnam War was not like any other war that the United States had been a part of in the past. It was horrendous and unsafe for anyone involved, whether it be troops of either side, or innocent children who could not help but be caught in the middle of a war zone. The Vietnam War is one of the most debatable and controversial wars in U.S. History. To this day people are questioning why we ever entered a war that was over 8,000 miles away. Why would we put our soldiers through such harsh fighting conditions and why would we spend so much money on a war that was not ours? Some people say that U.S. involvement was necessary to help end Communism and important to keep South Vietnam from coming under North Vietnamese control. However, there are many people who oppose that U.S. was involved due to the high number of casualties and financial burden it had on our country.
