Have you ever lost a loved one to cancer? If you were diagnosed with cancer, would you go through chemotherapy? Have you ever had trouble sleeping at night? Have you experienced intense fear or panic, the moment where your hearts racing, palms are sweating, you can’t stop shaking, and you’re worried sick that something bad is bound to happen? Have you ever had a loss of hope or have experienced any type of physical and emotional pain? What if I told you there was a solution to all of that? Well there is a solution. Cannabis.
Nearly twenty years ago, scientists discovered a system in the brain called the endocannabinoid system. This system responds to 60 chemicals in cannabis, also known as marijuana. The endocannabinoid system plays a role in many of the body’s functions, such as in the heart, along with the digestive, immune, nervous, and reproductive systems.
Marijuana can be the cure to many illnesses, one of them being cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, following heart disease. Marijuana contains cannabidiol (CBD) which helps fight cancer and stops it from spreading resulting to it becoming severe. It stops cancer by turning off a gene called ID-1. There are more cancerous copies of this gene than non-cancerous cells, resulting in the spread of more cancerous cells. Through marijuana, the spreading could actually come to an end. It could cure many types of cancer, such as breast cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, blood cancer, skin, and more! Marijuana contains an active ingredient called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which has been proven to help stop seizures by binding to the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation.
Marijuana can also help fight depression and anxiety, changing someone's mindset from negative to positive. I’m going to read you an excerpt from Mabie Nery’s essay, “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is one of the mental disorders that marijuana can cure. A lot of people suffer from trauma, and the naturally occurring cannabinoids, similar to tetrahydrocannabinol, help regulate the system that causes fear and anxiety in the body and brain. Marijuana spurs creativity in a brain. Even though people’s short-term
Since the 1970’s, marijuana has been an extremely controversial drug. While some argue that it does not harm to your body, and can do good in the world, others classify it as a “gateway” drug. As the number states in the U.S. legalize the drug increases, 26 to be exact, the debate is only getting more heated. Also known as weed, cannabis, dope, etc., marijuana has been scientifically proven to do good in the medical world, be safer than alcohol and tobacco, and increase a growth in our economy.
b. Joe Messerli of Balancedpolitics.org, states, “There are a number of medical benefits of marijuana, most notably in the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy. Others believe it helps in the treatment of depression unlike alcohol.”
As mentioned above numerous studies have shown the viability of cannabis as a potential cancer treatment. Studies have not only shown how marijuana inhibits tumor growth, cell death, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow but it also can dramatically improve the quality of life of a cancer
(The Union, Brett Harvey) Tumors are one of the biggest diseases that cancer can treat. It is a proven fact that cannabis slows down the growth of tumors. (A NormL Life, Rod Pitman) The cannabinoids slow down the facsimile which in return slows down the production of cancer cells in the body. (A NormL Life, Rod Pitman) Cannabis is also good for Alzheimer’s disease and for people that suffer from seizures. Chronic diseases are also treated by cannabis. (The Union, Brett Harvey) The cannabis helps people relax and feel less pain, which then allows people with chronic diseases to operate easier. (A NormL Life, Rod Pitman) The cannabinoids in cannabis relaxes their muscles which allows them to move and talk more freely and more understandable. (How weed won the west, Kevin Booth)
Marijuana, also call “cannabis” is a plant grown all over the world. In the resin of this plant are multiple variations of “cannabinoids”, according to the National Cancer Institute cannabinoids are “active chemicals in cannabis that cause drug like effects throughout the body, including the central nervous system, and the immune system” (National Cancer Institute). This being said many people would argue that anything altering the mental, or cognitive function of an individual should be made illegal, and yet many pharmaceutical drugs, as well as alcohol do just that. One active cannabinoid in cannabis is “cannabidiol” (National Cancer Institute), this cannabinoid can reduce anxiety, pain, and lower inflammation. These effects can even be harnassed without activating the cannibinoids giving the user a “high”. Many cancer patients are exposed to chemotherapy, causing high levels of vomiting and nausea, the effects of cannabidiol could greatly reduce the
The body naturally produces these compounds, which are similar to the chemicals in cannabis. Reduction of endocannabinoid production is one reason why chronic stress is a major risk factor in the development of depression. The research team at the university administered marijuana cannabinoids to the rats, finding it to be an effective way to restore endocannabinoid levels in their brains, alleviating some symptoms of depression. In addition, the university that found synthetic cannabinoids activated the part of the brain associated with traumatic memories in rats, preventing the behavioral and physiological symptoms of PTSD. The article notes that depression is such a complex mental disorder as well as alleviating it with cannabis. Because of the lack of testing on the relationship between cannabis and depression, there is no 100% statement claiming that marijuana can help depression in human trials, although there are promising lab tests on rats.
Cannabis has provided millions worldwide with relief from chronic pain caused by a myriad of pain-producing illnesses. Cannabis has significantly improved the quality of life of people with cancer, AIDS, arthritis, and the list goes on. The medical marijuana movement is not concerned with decriminalizing or legalizing cannabis for recreational use. It is concerned with helping people with serious illnesses and disabilities to get on with their lives. (Bearman, 2011)
Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes pressure in the eyeball leading to the optic nerve becoming damages and causing vision loss. Marijuana helps the chance of by decreasing the eye pressure and slow the progression of the disease lessening the chance of blindness. Another serious issue that cannabis is showing great help with is presently seizures caused by epilepsy or Dravet’s Syndrome. The tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) controls the brain cells that are responsible for relaxation and excitability helping to rest the body from future epileptic seizures.
“Studies in the early 1970s showed that marijuana, when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with normal pressure and those with glaucoma” (Welsh). Other illnesses marijuana helps would be epilepsy. For example, Robert J. DeLorenzo, of Virginia Commonwealth University, gave marijuana extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. The drugs rid the rats of the seizures for about 10 hours.(Welsh) Cannabinoids like the active ingredients in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (also known as THC), control seizures by binding to the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation. Now it doesn’t completely cure the disease, but it does help the symptoms and most of the causes. Even if it helps a little, it's still better than nothing. It makes it one step closer to finding a cure, with more research and data. Some myths about marijuana are that people get addicted to it easily. A study has shown that most who use marijuana do not become addicted to it. Published data showed that only 9% of adults and 17% of young people get addicted to it (Rathi). Another myth was it’s harmful. It’s not as harmful as other drugs. It is not as dangerous as opioids, for example, but while marijuana may not be as bad as opioids, it still can be dangerous. Another myth would be inhaling marijuana has different risks than eating it. The risks are mostly associated with
Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain or you have pain following surgery, you’ve probably looked into what treatments are available for you. You’ve done quite a bit of research. You’re wondering if cannabis for pain management is your solution.
Cannabis has cured some Cancer symptoms for many patients, “A number of studies of smoked marijuana found that it can be helpful in treating nausea and vomiting from cancer chemotherapy...studies have found that inhaled (smoked or vaporized) marijuana can be helpful treatment of neuropathic pain (pain caused by damaged nerves)” ("Marijuana and Cancer." Marijuana and Cancer. Web. 13 Nov. 2015) meaning that inhaling medical marijuana can actually help you with some symptoms that cancer does on your body. “More recently, scientists reported that THC and other cannabinoids such as CBD slow growth and/or cause death in certain types of cancer cells growing in laboratory
Evidence from one cell culture study suggests that purified extracts from whole-plant marijuana can slow the growth of cancer cells from one of the most serious types of brain tumors. Marijuana injures the lungs, immune system, and brain and is addictive, leads to harder drug use, interferes with fertility, impairs driving ability, and that medical marijuana is a front for drug legalization and recreational use. And the cannabis can help people with with HIV/AIDS be reducing the nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy and to treat pain and muscle
It is hard to imagine the day-to-day pain that a cancer patient endures, but one can imagine that any type of relief would be invited from the victim and their families. These poor individuals suffer throughout the day, and unfortunately are in so much discomfort that attempting to live an ordinary life is virtually impossible. Providing people in these conditions with something that will help is almost a no brainer to people looking from the outside in. This is where marijuana can be an effective substitute for the treatments they are already taking. On this drug, many of those going through unbearable pain can function, and begin to appreciate life as they might have before the pain began.
Cannabis is usually considered to be a harmful substance. There is a commonly shared opinion that this plant has an addictive nature and that it is responsible for damaging both your mental and your physical health, which is why it’s illegal in most of the countries in the world. However, contrary to popular belief, this plant has been used for medical purposes since ancient times. An active chemical found in the cannabis, THC, is credited for its ability to relieve pain, to reduce anxiety, to prevent vomiting and nausea and, to increase the appetite, which is why this plant is often linked with cancer treatment. But, what is less commonly known is that THC can destroy cancer cells completely.
Marijuana is a drug that has the ability to alter people's mind . Each little bud and leaf of the marijuana plant is composed of hundreds of chemicals, but scientists have mainly studied just two main compounds: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the psychoactive ingredient responsible for the psychological and physical side effects. It is what produces feelings of euphoria, relaxed inhibitions, fragmentary thoughts, lack of concentration, impaired memory, drowsiness, and even sudden panic or paranoia. CBD in the non - psychoactive ingredient and is responsible for making the consumer feel calm and relaxed. It also contains analgesic which contains pain relieving, anti-inflammatory and antipsychotic properties. These properties
