“Seafare, the new frontier for our modernized world.”- Cunard Line shipbuilding franchise. Back the 1800’s, the main goal for shipbuilding companies around Europe, was the crossing of the great Atlantic Ocean. These competitions would rowel up the people of Europe, giving them more reason to believe that mankind can perform anything. The Atlantic voyages, were the space race of the 1800’s, each company tried to make the biggest ship, and the fastest ship, to make it across the Atlantic in record time. However, even in this golden age of Atlantic travel, many problems slowly brewed across Europe. Even in the races, captains were blinded by their intent to finish first, the lives of the passengers lied at stake. In this time, many ships sunk …show more content…
However, the explosion will remain a mystery, since no recognition of a sub was found.
After the wreck of the Britannic, the rival company of white star line, Cunard line, create a marvel just as great as the Titanic. That was the Lusitania, this ship was a grand liner, with huge ballrooms and dining halls, for the wealthy first class. However, underneath all of this leisure and happiness, lied a dirty secret. Underneath the hull of the Lusitania, held hundreds of pounds of gunpowder and weapons for the fighting in World War Two. The ship was then dispatched off the coast of England, to deliver the cargo and passengers to the Norwegian front. However, off the coast of a picnic gathering on the coast of Ireland, a family spotted the beautiful ship gliding across the blue water, but something they saw would change the kids and their lives forever. In the distance, the family saw a large puff of thick black smoke rise from the bottom or the ship, the sound then echoed through the empty pasture of grass, they could do nothing, but watch the scene in horror. Meanwhile, on the ship, lifeboats were being launched only half-full, and many did not make it in the water. Then suddenly a large fire spewed up from the bottom of the ship, and blasted six lifeboats, people were jumping in the water hoping to survive, then something far worse happened. From underneath the ship, a huge fire
Every so often in life we encounter an opportunity to take a shortcut, to circumvent the traditional path, and attempt to reach our goals without the customary planning, patience, and hard work that invariably goes into any worthwhile endeavor. One such opportunity presented itself in the late summer of 2007, when I was hired to deliver the 38-foot Island Packet cutter Guinevere from Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, to Bradenton, Florida. By then I had over thirty years’ experience as a licensed captain, ocean yacht master, and certified sailing instructor, and so when I was persuaded to take a shortcut through Passage Key Inlet and ran aground, I immediately realized I should, all along, have trusted my training and instincts.
“Mother is this ship really safe and unsinkable?” said Mary Anne Louise to her mom while she started to walk towards the RMS Titanic “I have the same question as the girl… Is this ship really unsinkable?” said a lady known as Mrs.Sylvia Caldwell. “Of course it is unsinkable God himself could not sink this ship!” exclaimed the crew member as he helped her up the steps. After they entered the ship, she stood in amazement see how this ship was designed. She suddenly saw a girl dressed in a simple, pretty white dress and a large bow on the back of her head. She wanted to say hi but her mom wouldn’t let her because she was a lower class than her
Finally looking at them he stared and slowly placed the paper at the top of his cluttered desk, turning to the two men and sighed the first words, "More of this madness.” Gazing out the window he continued, “For months this town has been unsettled and upset because of these damn requests and these damn ships. Were you present yesterday at the fight at the waterfront?” They shook their head no. “Over the most unbelievable thing,” he shook his head as if scolding school boys. “It seems that one of the sailors, a questionable man he must be, to go on this voyage and perhaps with a bit too much drink in him, told your Captain that,” here the shop keeper played the part of a drunk, “Aye, the 'La Gallega' was a most awkward ship for such a voyage!”
Many historians do not believe the full story about what exactly happened to the Lusitania except it was hit by a torpedo. The problem could be due to the second explosion that occurred after the first hit and many think it could have been due to the ammunition which was being transported from the United States to Great Britain to help British continue their war campaign. One would ask what does this have to do with the similarities or dissimilarity is because the RMS Lusitania was no ordinary ship. Many people don’t know the history of this great cruise liner because of the historic sinking of the
America’s last frontier; Alaska, is the largest U.S state, but also has the smallest population. Though Alaska has the smallest population out of any other states it is home to some of the largest landmarks in the United States. Alaska is home to Mt. McKinley, which is the highest point in North America, and the Yukon River which is one of the longest Navigable waterways in not only the United States but the world. Despite the fact that Alaska has the smallest population for people, it has the largest Brown Bear, Moose, and Elk population in the whole United States. Very little is known about the 49th state, but it fits its name as “The Last Frontier”.
At present, we consider ourselves living in a modern society with big cities and advanced technologies. New innovations allow us to transport and connect around the globe quickly. Human have more opportunities to interact, communicate and develop. The American life we live is such a happy picture drawn by ourselves, by the American Dream. But as a natural reaction, with those delightful and colorful layers on the top, we tend to forget the backdrop of our picture. We forget the foundation of that living picture, the origin that shaped the American being and characteristics. One of them is the frontier. Frederick Jackson Turner, a famous historian from the University of Wisconsin advanced his frontier
The origin of this source is valuable because both authors are highly credible with Bailey being a professor and author of books on diplomatic history and Ryan as a World War II commander and researcher. Additionally, with publication date being long after the sinking, the authors have the advantage of hindsight in their evaluations. The purpose of this book is to create a source that thoroughly analyzes the sinking in order for readers to better understand events surrounding the sinking. This is valuable because prior to the publication of this book, it was intended to replace sensationalized articles and books pertaining to the Lusitania thus the experienced authors put in extra effort to create a work which can be used as a source for the future. This could be a limitation as well considering the intended audience was American and British readership, thus allowing the authors to paint the Germans as villains for instigating the attack. The content is valuable as this book is derived from a range of sources from released government documents to eyewitness accounts allowing for the analysis of the sinking to be looked at from a number of
The emergence of western history as an important field of scholarship started with Frederick Jackson Turner’s (1861-1932) famous essay “The Significance of the Frontier in American history.”[1] This thesis shaped both popular and scholarly views of the West for the next two generations. In his thesis, Turner argued that the West had to be taken seriously. He felt that up to his time there had not been enough research of what he in his essay call “the fundamental, dominating fact in the U.S. history”: the territorial expansion from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. The frontier past was, according to Turner, the best way to describe the distinctive American history and character.
On February 9th, 1942 the SS Normandie was over at Pier 88 on West 49th Street in New York City was being turned into a troopship for the U.S. Navy. Clement Derrick was removing the last couple frames of the Grand Salon inside the ship when the sparks from his welder’s torch fell onto the ships highly flammable life preservers. In roughly half an hour the entire ship was engulfed in flames with black smoke pillowing over the Manhattan sky.1
Cole 1 ~Intro~ Did you know that the fourth smokestack on the Titanic was fake, and that is was made just for looks? Thomas Andrews, the Titanic’s architect, thought instead of having three smokestacks that having four would raise public interest. But when the Titanic was sinking, the fake smokestack fell on people and instantly killed them. The Titanic was made for luxury and had succeeded but all of the effort was wasted when all of the items became dead weight at the bottom of the sea. All the work and effort was lost when the Titanic struck the iceberg.
It was a regular day out in the seas, when all the sudden the Lusitania was attacked and sunken!. In 1915,there was a war between states around the world.1,198 died and 761 survived. So many dead lying in the ocean. And only a few people trying to live.
The Lusitania took many lives and here are some ways they got through it. ¨They said a prayer. Elsie turned to two frantic woman beside her and simply said, ¨God will save you.¨ Also, ¨Elsie filled with excitement as she hurried up the gangway.¨ The last one
The author states that Elsie, her dad, and brother were hearing some rumors that the Germans might hit the Lusitania. In the end they were hit by a torpedo and their lives changed in an instant.
Elsie was excited to explore the first class part of the ship, even though she was a third class passenger. First class had luxury that she had never seen before. A german U-boat was coming closer and closer to the beautiful ship. “ U-boats were hot, claustrophobic and full of sweat, fumes, and human waste.” The U-boat had to sink at least two ships that day, and the lusitania was one of them. The U-boat created a torpedo that struck the lusitania. The large ship couldn’t take it and sank. Panic rose upon the ship. People fell of the ship and had to swim in Fifty degrees water. Death had taken over. Elsie’s brother, Frank, fell off the ship and no
The Lusitania has sunk! Two torpedoes have flown right throw the middle. It sunk in less than 8 minutes in the middle of the Irish sea. What a tragedy. This was only 3 years from the titanic.
