The Night Circus The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is about two young illusionist whom are pitted against one another in a challenge in which only one will survive yet no one understands what the challenge is. “Magic,” the man in the grey suit repeats, turning the word into a laugh. “This is not magic. This is the way the world is, only very few people take time to stop and note it… Not one of them has even an inkling of the things that are possible in this world… They want to believe that magic is nothing but clever deception, because to think it real would keep them up at night, afraid of their own existence.” (Morgenstern, 504) The central theme of this novel is that, as seen in the previous quote, people see what they want to see and accept what they want to be true. I agree that people can be closed off to an idea or topic even when the information is presented directly to them so I do enjoy the perspective this author has taken. Though the world holds so much mystery, wonder and adventure, not everyone can see it. There is one part of the book, in which Celia, the circus illusionist, is over at the home of Herr Friedrick Thiessen, the …show more content…
As Newton’s Third Law states, every action has an equal and opposite amount of reaction. because of this, every “play” made by Celia and Marco has an impact on someone else. One more that Celia makes results in the death of Lianne. “...and I do not know exactly what kind of rules your game had, but i suspect that you owe us this much, if we were all put at risk for your wager.” (507) Because of Hector’s pride, he began the challenge that ultimately resulted in the suffering of everyone involved in that circus. Every choice in this book that is made, or forced upon the character, has a major impact on everyone else. This is another theme present in the novel The Night Circus by Erin
My book report is for A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen. I chose this book because it describes the life of a twelve year old girl during the Great Berlin Wall. This book is about a young girl named Greta who is separated from her father and brother because of the Berlin Wall. One day Greta gets a message from her father. She thinks he wants her to start digging a tunnel. Greta finds and old abandoned building where she starts digging. Greta and her brother Fritz work long, tireless, never-ending days digging. One day there was someone of the other side of the tunnel, it was Papa. Once the tunnel was completed they set through it, escaping the treacherous East side, to the colorful bright West.
One of the themes that exists throughout the book is the power of love, how decisions driven by love, can change a person’s life for betterment. Numerous times in the book, characters are forced to make life-changing decisions. A significant example in The Night Circus is when Bailey faced an extremely
Only about 3,546,211 people survived the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler was the main leader of the Holocaust, he did this because of his discrimination of Jews. There were more than just Jews killed, there were gay people, priests, gypsies, people with mental or physical disabilities, communists, trade unionists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, anarchists, Poles and other Slavic peoples, and resistance fighters. The Holocaust happened between 1933 through 1945 in Germany and Poland. Night, is an autobiography written by Elie Wisel who was involved in the Holocaust. Auschwitz Death Camp, it is a video documentary of the death camp including Elie Wisel and Oprah Winfrey. The truth about the Holocaust to me is horrendous, all the torturing they had to go through
At the beginning of these chapters they thought their luck was changing, but sadly it was not. The Kommandant and the Oberscharfuher were talking about how Roosevelt was dead and how they would win. After this happened they shortly arrived at Lager Tekla a small Hungarian Jewish women’s camp. Magda was separated from the them because she was already a Lager worker. Magda’s barrack was bombed out, but she escaped just in time and joined jutka and mother. They were later herded to Schonau Lager. At this camp they were a little scared of the americans constant bombing. At this new camp there were some captured soldiers who offered bits and pieces of information about what was going on in the war. Jutka, Magda, and mother were forced to go on a march, but
Ready Player One hits some of the same situations as in the holocaust or for the book that we read “Night” like taking people spread out over a good area and combining them into a small dense area. They both also touch on the topic of how when someone is killed or something is blown up now one raises an eyebrow or if they do no one does anything about it.
Throughout the story there is circus imagery, which is significant to the story in several ways. A circus is commonly known for being the entertainment for a large group of people and is also characterized by a variety of acts and events designed to arouse the awe and fascination of the crowds. The young African-American men in the story are forced to participate in a variety of events designed for the sole purpose of entertaining the crowd of white men. This is effective because it is very compelling in the way whites used to treat blacks. They looked at them such as "circus animals" and felt empowered to do whatever they wanted, making them look like clowns.
Love affects the choices everyone makes without realization or much thought put into it, love is lost when life intervenes, also love can only open when realized its sustenance of its existence is lost. The Night Circus by Erin Morgentern, is a story of two lovers constrained by a magic challenge forcing them to compete against each other in a fight to the death. Love involves sacrafice as Marco save's Celia and sacrifices himself by not dying; instead living in the central fire that is in the circus, another example of love involving sacrifice shown in the book is Hector sacrificing Celia for the sake of competition knowing that she could potentially die, also another example of love involving sacrifice is when Poppet asks Bailey to leave everything he knows at home to come with the circus.
With more people passed than survivors of the Holocaust, we rely on the survivors to give us insight on what the Holocaust was actually like. In the autobiography Night by Elie Wiesel, thousands of people learn true facts about what the torture and the pain was actually like for the ones who were unfortunate to suffer from this event in History. Elie gives specific and horrific examples of what he suffered and saw while he was at camp. Elie’s goal is to teach others the importance of human lives and why no human is replaceable and anyone is capable of doing anything. This book is highly recommended by myself, and many others such as: book reviewers, other authors, teachers, and students.
Listening to peer pressure has the power to shift one’s fate. William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar, demonstrates how pressuring a man to execute an atrocity will have a detrimental impact on his life. As a scheme forms to overthrow a rising emperor and his followers, the men in the conspiracy of murdering Caesar create more damage than value. Eventually, the rising tension to kill an upcoming ruler creates a downfall of the Roman Empire, a breaking of trust among companions, and the death of numerous men and women. The pressure present in Shakespeare's play has a drastic outcome on every character’s life (Crowther).
In The Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern symbolizes the characters lack of free will by comparing the circus and their lives to birds being held in cages. Celia and Marco lost their privacy and freedom at a young age because they were forced and manipulated by Hector and Alexander. They are like birds stuck in a cage, unable to go where they please, controlled by their masters. They are not the only ones who are stuck though. Bailey entered a tent, “no longer a door to be found” (142).
The book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen includes a sequence of events that provides stories of times prior slaves ran away. A girl named Alice—in her own land— was always wondering and was never really working as hard as the other slaves did. She came close to the white house and Waller caught her. Later in the flashback, a boy named Jim ran away, climbed up a tree, and the dogs ate at him —he died. Finally, a boy named Pawley was sneaking out to see a girl and got caught one night, and he ran away. The dogs started to chase after him, and ate him, but did not kill him. He bled to death and since he was not a breeder; Waller let him die. After, Alice ran away, and the dogs ate at her, Mammy sewed her up and she lived—it was a sense of hope for
All these things add to the core style of the book, which is an unforgiving rollercoaster of emotions for the reader. The story can have twists, and opinions on characters can change with a small conversation. This rollercoaster not only makes this book an amazing mystery that keeps
Remember the refrain: We always build on the past; the past always tries to stop us. Freedom is about stopping the past, but we have lost that ideal-Lawrence Lessig. This quote is helpful to remember. We should always keep our head in the present but never forget what happened in the past to bring us here today, and be grateful for our current status. The holocaust was an important event in the past that we shouldn’t forget. There are many stories, biographies and autobiographies written about it today. Night by Elie Wiesel, an autobiography about the holocaust, should be a required high school reading because it is an important event, of many, that show us why we should be grateful for our current state.
The Night Circus shows up without warning. It becomes an instant success. It proves the impossible, possible. It treats all your senses, either with the black and white tents, or the unique caramel scent in the air. It welcomes everyone to get lost in clouds, experience impossible feats by illusionists and acrobats, or stumble upon a more hidden tent with sensations in a bottle.
