There are over 5000 Indigenous communities in over 70 different countries. They are defined collectively under the term Indigenous Peoples (IPs) by the Cobo Report but this term also allows for their diversity. They face numerous legal issues in attempting to achieve their rights, so they have collectively united to access the remedies available to them to achieve justice.

This article discusses how community organizations can utilize Native American traditions of justice to help Natives within state, federal, and tribal courts and hearings.

The first pattern set noticeably in history would the creation and long standing institution of a one-party rule over Mexican government. The first election of a Mexican President after the removal of Porfirio Diaz was in 1920 with Alvaro Obregon. (CMH, 425) Obregon would face harsh economic trouble during a post-World War I economy. The consequences of undiagnosed and untreated OSA are medically serious and economically costly. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is considered the gold standard of treatment for OSA along with lifestyle modifications. With CPAP use, patients can reduce their healthcare utilization and save money by reducing the impact of OSA symptoms, comorbidities, and motor vehicle accidents. Direct costs associated with comorbidities include increased medical expenses, emergency room visits, hospital inpatient visits, medication use, and mortality rates (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2016).

The Assembly of First Nations, a political organization which represents First Nations citizens in Canada, has been championing the rights of indigenous people, treaties, land and resources, and other problems to help improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people. Founded in 1982, the organization’s largest impacts on Canadian law have been regarding the Kelowna Accord and the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA).

The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) is a minimum standard, outlining the rights and responsibilities of the workplace parties. The OHSA in conjunction with the Industrial Establishments Regulations provide requirements for reporting workplace accidents that result in fatalities and critical injuries, occupational illnesses, and disabling injuries (Workplace Safety and Prevention Services, 2011). The OHSA covers workers in most workplaces in Ontario. There are however some exceptions with regards to private residences, specific farming operations, teachers and self-employed persons. These exceptions are covered under subsections 3(1), 3(2), 3(3)(a), 3(3)(b) and 4 of the OHSA (Is my job covered? (n.d.)).

Indigenous peoples have largely been ignored by International Relations and Conflict Resolution because they are considered subjects of domestic matters; the state in which they reside is supposed to be the one in charge of them. However, the idea of doing this research intends to challenge that perception. Mexico, much like the United States, is composed of free states that add up to thirty one in total. The people of Mexico trace their heritage to that of multiple nationalities that range from Native American indigenous to individuals with ancestry to European nations. This fact maybe due to the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the shipment of ethnicities that are not usually endemic to the region making Mexicans what they call “mestizos.” Again like the United States, Mexico has a presidential system with legislative, executive and judicial branches. Differences arise from the length of terms of office such as the President of Mexico is elected for six years with only being able to serve one term instead of the usual four years in office in the United States and the possibility of re-election. Mexico has a bicameral legislature made up of senators and deputies like the president they are prohibited to be re-elected to the same government position but they are able to be put in office for the other opened government positions. For example a deputy may not be elected twice to be a deputy but can be elected to be senator or president of Mexico. In terms of economy Mexico has entered into the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA, a legislation implemented between Mexico, Canada and the United States that removes most tariffs on trade between its members. NAFTA looks to increase trade within all countries involved. Since this trade agreement Mexico has been oriented towards manufacturing becoming United States second largest source for export and the third largest for imports. Though Mexico has made large strides toward becoming a developed nation there remains substantial income inequality that affects the Mexican citizen’s opportunity for getting health care. In 2007, the United Nations made the document entitled the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It was made with the help and fought for by Indigenous peoples. That essentially ensures the protection of their rights. Mistreatment of source materials and disrespecting of cultures and even outright theft. The North American Free Trade Agreement or as its most commonly known NAFTA “is a comprehensive rules-based agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico”, that came into effect on January 1,1994. All three countries signed it in December of 1992; later on November of 1993 it was ratified by the United States congress. NAFTA was not only used in cutting down on tariffs between both countries but it also help deal with issues such as Transportation, Border Issues, and Environmental Issues between these two countries.
