The heart and soul of the story, the very foundation that reflects and defines the main character’s experience or their thoughts and actions, the intended moral of the story as well as the conclusion or point of view of the author – these are all expressed through the theme. It is the element of fiction that glues and binds all the other elements of a story together. The goal of this paper is to show how the theme of suffering affected the characters of two different works of fiction. In the story of “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula Le Guin, the city of Omelas was described as a utopian setting with joyful citizens living in abundance, although some had an internal suffering because of the existence of a particular being. Although most of the citizens of Omelas have come to terms with the fact that for them to remain happy and live in prosperity the child needed to stay locked up and in misery, this idea created an internal struggle in some, and “often the young people go home in tears, or in a tearless rage, when they have seen the child and faced this terrible paradox.” (Le Guin par. 12). On the other hand, Mami had to endure through extreme poverty because of the absence of her husband, raising two boys as a single parent, working “ten-, twelve hour shifts for almost no money at all,” (Diaz 71), a job which could’ve been done more easily if her husband was there for her to share the responsibilities with. Because even though they felt anger and disgust over the fact that this child lives in an atrocious condition, they would not throw away the happiness of thousands in favor of this child, so they let their guilt die down within their very walls (Le Guin 4). Yunior’s family managed to take a day off as a family, went and saw a movie and for once forget about the father and enjoyed their day (Diaz 85). But they can only keep his thoughts at bay for too long. Their impoverished lives reminds them every day of the suffering they have to go through because of this
