The Orinoco River

Many economic concerns have been brought up due to the harvesting of timber, mining and reservoir operations. Erosion has stripped the thin soil cover and caused silting of streams. Reservoir operations disrupted fisheries by changing the temperature and the patterns of the streams and how they flow.

Humans fish to survive and in doing so they will target specific species leading to overfishing. Sound pollution is causing issues with the wildlife of the ocean in how they communicate and move around. With human interaction comes trash which gets left in the ocean and affects many different species.

We usually think of the Grand Canyon in terms of its rocks, and the story and history that they can contain, spanning as far back as half of the Earth’s age. There is more to this canyon though than the rocks, as it is still active as a forever changing landform, due to the power of running water. The Colorado River has carved out the Grand Canyon in just the last nine million years. In fact, the river itself carries about half a million tons of sediment through the Grand Canyon each and every day. Recent Agricultural and human activities are causing this threat in local rivers. This is causing many environmental and safety issues in Iowa. High levels of Nitrogen and Phosphorus are contaminating local rivers across the state.

The Colorado River is a very important water source for the Southwest and its people. But I think the river is most important for the farmers.

The habitats that are exploited to farm fish are becoming ineffective, as a result of disappearing mangroves. Humans should be protecting wild fish instead of over farming them. The issues caused by aquaculture are rendering the ecosystem unsustainable. In this chapter, we learned about aquaculture and all the various problems that come with it.

Furthermore, the Colorado River, located in the state of Colorado in the United States of America has been decreasing due to a lack of rainfall, which mainly feeds this river. Millions of people from other states rely on the Colorado River, including those in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. China, also has seen thousands of its rivers disappear, according to a recently published Bulletin of First National Census for Water in China.

Humans are the number one contributor to this problem. With the continuing rise in population that relies on fish in their diet and the demand to meet it there has been more need for fishermen and fisheries to meet these needs. With the increase in the number of fishermen and fisheries in industry, there has been an increase in competition to get the largest catch and make as much money as possible. The race by fishermen and fisheries to increase their catches and the need to meet demands has led to the discovery of the technology and techniques that would allow for this which are often destructive. However, this problem affects more than humans. There are other animals that have fish in their diet. Fish are also in the diet of many species in the water and are responsible for eating some species. With dwindling fish populations and the chance that we will one day be without fish, we face the balance of the species and habitats that are sustained by fish becoming unbalanced or losing many more species as a result.

Another global effect of overfishing is fish farming or aquaculture. It was first started to help preserve the ocean and hoped to help people to obtain a reliable fish source. Unfortunately, what many came to realize is the downside of fish farming. One example is water contamination, where consequently waste products such as foods eaten, feces and other dead fish, are all dumped into our main water supply which contributes to water pollution. Moreover, chemicals that are used to treat the fish farms like antibiotics and algaecides are all released into the ocean; which is a real cause for concern for our oceans. In order for there to be plenty of fish in the years ahead, fisheries will have to develop sustainable fisheries and some will have to close. Due to the constant increase in the human population, the oceans have been overfished with a resulting decline of fish crucial to the economy and communities of the world. The control of the world's fisheries is a controversial subject, as they cannot produce enough to satisfy the demand, especially when there aren't enough fish left to breed in healthy ecosystems. Scientists are often in the role of fisheries managers and must regulate the amount of fishing in the oceans, a position not popular with those who have to make a living fishing ever decreasing populations.

According to the United Nations, 17% of fish stocks worldwide are currently overexploited; 52% are fully exploited; and 7% are depleted. This means that only an estimated 20% of worldwide fish stocks are not already at or above their capacity(Seafarms, 2013). Catches of Pacific herring have decreased by 71% since the 1960s, with Atlantic herring catches falling by 63%. Atlantic Cod catches have fallen by 69% in the same time(Seafarms, 2013). The world population is growing and growing rapidly, and as the population increase, we require and consume more of the resources we need to survive. Our resources are decreasing as our numbers increase. We eat more and more. For example, fishermen on the Chesapeake Bay, according to Larry Simons (Poisoned Waters), are getting less fish, oysters and crabs. The variety of what they get is also decreasing since many sea animals became extinct in that bay like shad, yellow perch and tarpon. Humans are overfishing the resources causing them to disappear.
