The Other Wes Moore is a true story about two boys who grow up in a bad neighborhood. They shared the same first and last name, but they had two different fates. Wes, the main character and author of the book had two parents; Wesley and Joy, and two sisters; Nikki and Shani. Wes (1) had a hard time growing up because of the death of his father, who died of a rare virus. Devastated about the death of her husband Joy moved her children into her parents’ home in the Bronx. When Wes was 6, he was enrolled in an elite prep school. Moore didn’t fit in either place and he was upset about that. Wes took out his anger on school, he started getting in trouble and skipping school altogether. He also got arrested for doing graffiti. Joy couldn’t take it anymore so she begged her parents for money so that she could send Wes to military school. The “other” Wes, on the other hand, decided to stay in the drug life to make extra cash so he could buy flashy things and such. This is a text-to-world because many teens would drop out of school thinking getting a diploma is not worth the wait. Some do it because others do it or it too hard for them, in other cases getting bullied is also a cause for drop outs.
