The book, “The Other Wes Moore,” is mainly about two African American men that share the same name, Wes Moore. One Wes Moore gets a life sentence in prison, while the other becomes a author, a Rhodes scholar, and a decorated combat veteran. They both however live in the same city. The story starts off around the 2000s when the Baltimore Sun put out a small piece of Wes Moore. The piece was about a robbery in which a police officer was killed. Ironically the police was hunting two brothers, one named Wes Moore. After following the robbery story, Wes wrote a letter to the other Wes, who was now serving life in prison. Basically Wes just asked questions that the other Wes was hoping he wouldn’t ask. This letter led to a long lasting relationship. After a few more letters and prison visits, Wes realized how both their lifestyles were different. Both grew up in similar neighborhoods, same childhood troubles and faced with similar moments that decisions had to be …show more content…
This is similar to how the McCourts from, “Angela’s Ashes,” had a rough time being able to provide for their family. Another similarity that I noticed was the relationship between the two Wes Moores and Frank and Malachy. One Wes Moore ended up very successful and how the other Wes Moore was the complete opposite and ended up life sentence in prison. This is similar to how Frank is able to make the right decisions and provides for his family while his father Malachy is the opposite who waste money on drinking an and leaves his family behind. Additionally, the theme of education is present in both books. In, “The Other Wes Moore,” we see that education is the only thing that can help you make the right decision and stay out of prison like the other Wes Moore. In, “Angela’s Ashes,” we see Frank’s interest in knowledge and how throughout the novel he is reading, writing, and
In the other Wes Moore it’s about one name but two different fates. It describes how both Wes Moore’s started life started and how it is now. Both started in bad steps Wes Moore the author was sent to military school and put his life back on track and how the other Wes Moore continued his drug life and now he is serving life sentence. I believe that the other Wes Moore could have done something different to have a better life and not end up in prison serving life sentence.
He was cuffed and escorted down the stairs by three police officers. While he was in the back of the police cruiser, his mother asked him if he was the one who shot Ray and he just gave her a blank expression. Later, as the police cruiser was pulling away Wes asked them to stop and they cracked the window. Wes yelled for his mother and he answered her question. He told her that he did not know if he shot Ray or not. That day, Wes’s mother felt as if she had lost him in an irrevocable way because of his involvement in the drug game, his approaching fatherhood, and now his arrest for shooting Ray. Although both men encountered having to make life choices, the choices they made were immensely different.
“One name, two fates,” that what the author of the Other Wes Moore stated on the cover of his book. Two boys that were born in the same neighborhood in Baltimore, and had a difficult childhood since they both grew up fatherless. The coincidence was that the two boys were called Wes. They both shared a lot of similarities from living in a poor neighborhood and growing up in Baltimore street corners with their squads. However, their futures were completely different as one achieved the impossible and the other was a convicted murderer serving a life sentence. People may think that how could this happen since they both were living the same circumstances. However, in the book Wes Moore, the boys did not have equal opportunities in terms of parenting, education, and environment.
In conclusion, Wes had been in a lot of trouble in his life. Between shooting a guy. Getting a girl pregnant at age fourteen. He also didn’t have people in his life that showed him between right and wrong. Wes’s attitude has been laid back in majority. But he can have a short temper at some
In the book, The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is about two kids with the same name that live two different backgrounds. Wes Moore is the author and tells his story of how successful he became, and the other Wes Moore is the antagonist in the book, which tells how his life went down the wrong path. The book shows the different phases of their lives, which have made them the people they are today. Wes Moore the author states, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” I agree with his statement because either one of them could have had bad influences that lead them down the wrong path. Someone who has a positive mindset and career goals, are mostly likely to be successful than those who don’t have a plan for the future. In my opinion, getting an education and making the right decisions in life, will lead to positive outcomes, rather than making poor decisions that leads one to become a criminal.
Wes and Other Wes both did not grow up with a father, but while Wes’s father died, Other Wes’s father left him. During a dialogue between Wes and other Wes, Other Wes says “Your father wasn’t there because he couldn't be, my father wasn’t there because he chose to be.” (OWM 3) This quote shows the pain the Other Wes has about his father's absence. Wes’s father died early on during his life. Although this was a tragedy it left a good memory of his father. He can look up to him and feel wanted. On the other hand Other Wes was abandoned. This leaves him feeling very unwanted. If his father doesn't want him who does. This really affects Other Wes in
At a different point in each of our lives, we understand the benefit of family and friend systems. Kids begin playing the sports their parents suggested; they wear the same style of clothing as their siblings, or continue their academics in hopes of pleasing their relatives. In the book The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, the author Wes Moore examines his life in comparison to another boy raised in the same conditions with the same name in similar Baltimore neighborhoods. The author grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow and business leader while the other Wes Moore became a convicted murderer and is now serving a life sentence in prison. While most ponder what the true cause for the difference in these two men’s life, I believe the primary reason was a lack of a strong family support system.
In The Other Wes Moore, author Wes Moore tells the story of his life as well as the life of a man with the same name. The book published in 2010 to highlight significant moments in both of their lives. The book was overall amazing and I recommend it to anyone who likes books about making a change in one’s life. The novel captures the audience attention, has a great overall purpose, and is relatable to anyone who has overcome obstacles and has reached success.
Estefani Magana Professor Buchanan English 73X 14 November 2015 Decisions that Changed their Lives Forever Wes and the other Wes Moore both made poor decisions at a young age, but only one was able to change for the better. “The Other Wes Moore” is a book written by Wes Moore about two men with the same name living very different lives. Both Wes Moores have a lot in common, both didn’t have a father growing up, their mother’s worked multiple jobs to give their families a better life, and both grew up in bad neighborhoods. I believe that both live drastically different lives because the other Wes Moore made poor decisions and Wes didn’t.
The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore about two Wes both with the same name, born in the Moore’s fate. This story is about two boys same city. One grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, and business leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison for murder. The author’s purpose is to explain how different variables affect who they grow up to be.
When I read, I was able to pick out key events in both childhoods that created a difference in the lives of the men. For example, the other Wes Moore continued to sell drugs after he was caught, while the author Wes Moore was remorseful after being caught tagging a wall. Obviously, author Wes Moore writes the book with an effective
Although anything could have happened differently, the very different events of their lives were major contributors to how their stories turned out. Other Wes had children. He was involved in shootings. Author Wes’s life was not nearly as intense. Therefore, their stories could not be interchangeable.
The author described the story The Other Wes Moores as one name two fates. The story is about two boys with the same name “Wes”; both the boys belong to a poor family background. It is quite unbelievable that the kids were not even of the similar names; in fact there were many similarities in their lives too. Since childhood, both of them have suffered in terms of emotional and financial distress because their fathers were not supporting them because one of the Wes father was a drug addict and his mother left him and the other Wes father died of a disease. The author of the book has narrated his own story in the book as being one Wes.
In the non-fiction novel and memoir, The Other Wes Moore: One Name Two Fates, the author, Wes Moore, outlines the two stories of himself and another man with the exact name as his growing up in Baltimore for a while; he shows how differently two lives can be lived, even in similar circumstances. The author Wes Moore, who will be referred to as Wes (1), introduces the characters and goes over some rich family history for himself and the other Wes. Wes Moore (1) reveals that both of their dads were gone at a young age where Wes (1)’s father died when Wes was three, and the other Wes’s father abandoned him before he was born, and was never in his life more than a few sporadic visits. Next, Moore (1) demonstrates how a family can affect choices and personality when the other Wes tries to stab another kid at the age of eight for punching him and gets arrested because of his brother’s advice. Wes Moore (1) moved once while the other Wes Moore moved around. In addition, Moore (1) establishes that both Wes Moores have bad grades in grade school, skip school, and have run ins with the police, although Wes (1) never gets arrested and the other Wes completely failed sixth grade. Moore (1) explains that around this time the other Wes started getting into the drug business just like his brother to have money and because he admired his brother. Wes Moore (1) tells how the other Wes Moore stole a car and got arrested, drank, smoked, and overall was not making wise life decisions. Moore (1)
The first key difference between the two Wes Moore’s lives is a lack or abundance of strong parental support. Wes was gifted with many different reliable sources for support whereas the Other Wes’s only advocate was his eldest brother who, even though he fought for his brother to change his fate, was a known seller of abusive substances.
