The Outsiders “They grew up on the outside of society. They weren't looking for a fight. They were looking to belong,” captures the essence of a bestselling novel that has captured the hearts of many. The Outsiders, written by S.E Hinton, is a coming-of-age story about a group of teens struggling within a fight between social classes. It is an emotional and compelling that was eventually adapted into a movie. The movie has been critically acclaimed and watched by thousands. Even though, the movie was based on the book and contains close similarities, there are differences regarding the characters, the plot, and the theme between the two. From book to movie, there were inconsistencies amongst the characters. While some characters were portrayed well in the movie, a few were not. For instance, Johnny Cade was quiet and broody in the book, but onscreen he was more talkative and open. He was also shown as a weaker character compared to the strength he had throughout the book. Dallas, or Dally, Winston was written as a cold, serious guy, yet he showed a more caring side in the movie. On …show more content…

The movie leaves out the beginning of the book, which allowed the reader to learn the attitudes of the community gangs toward each other, making it harder for the audience to grasp the tension early on. In the book, Sodapop was in a relationship with a girl named Sandy, but it was never mentioned in the movie. The end of the movie did not completely match up to end of the book. It did not include Ponyboy’s sickness after the rumble and Johnny’s death, nor did it show the court hearing regarding Bob Sheldon’s death. However, the middle of the movie was similar to the book. The main events were kept the same, such as Sodapop and Johnny leaving town and Johnny saving the schoolchildren from the church fire.
