People often think about how vast, or how important the Earth is, it is the domain of the human race. Where they strive to be the best, compete against others, world powers against another. But, in the vast reality of the cosmos, the Earth, is nothing more than a tiny little “pale blue dot.” Described none other than Carl Sagan, “The Pale Blue Dot,” reveals the scary reality about the placement of the human race in the “enveloping cosmic dark.” In his quote, Sagan uses pathos and logos about this reality, opening a deeper understanding that beyond the planet Earth, humans are nothing more than insignificant. He has revolutionized the way that people view our home, and the cosmos around it. Joel Achenbach starts his Smithsonian article …show more content…
They also took advantage of the gravitational pull of these reducing the time and fuel to travel through the solar system, it was like a sling-shot effect. The Voyager satellites were launched in 1977, Voyager I mission was to study Jupiter and Saturn, and Voyager II, Uranus and Neptune. The mission brought back stunning evidence that the people behind the mission didn’t anticipate for. Io, for example, was the discovered to have massive geological activity (the only other orbiting object besides Earth). The Voyager’s recorded nine eruptions during their brief orbit (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, News and Archives). In Carl Sagan’s show, Cosmos, he mentions that Voyager captured lightning on the dark side of Jupiter (Sagan Ep. 1). This is just one example of many scientific break throughs that the Voyagers have documented. Even up to 2012, mission control is still receiving signals from the Voyager satellites, as of August 25th, 2012, Voyager I surpassed the heliopause of the solar system (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, News and Archives). Once the Voyagers completed their primary mission of encountering the outer gas giants, “as Voyager I was heading toward the outer reaches of the solar system, Sagan was among those who persuaded NASA to aim the spacecraft’s camera back toward Earth, by then billions of miles away.”
In 1893, America was intimidated by France’s nationalism celebrated during their 1889 World 's Fair and decided to celebrate themselves. On May 1st, the Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago to celebrate everything that America has held sacred since the beginning of time. In the sinister non-fiction novel The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, the haunting tale of the events that happened behind the scenes at the 1893 World’s Fair are recounted and used to analyze how society was impacted. The good reviews of this book help highlight the cultural importance of the 1893 World’s Fair, architect Daniel H. Burnham, and serial killer H.H. Holmes have on society today.
In the chapter, the gray zone, the author Primo Levi describes the human relationships inside the Lager. In describing the gray zone, Levi discusses the different roles of prisoners assigned by the Nazi. The prisoners that did the work were seen as being more privileged which at the end of the day helped them get more food and live better. Therefore, the concept of the gray zone is analyzing the difference between the privileged and the non-privileged in the Lager. The difference can be seen by the tasks that the prisoners carried out, for example, one of the groups were seen as, “Low ranking functionaries... sweepers, kettle washers, night watchmen, bed smoothers... checkers of lice and scabies,
The Voyager Golden Record is a record consisting of multiple messages which was put onto the Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977. On these records were information consisting of sounds, images, and words which were deemed worthy by a NASA committee to be presented to extraterrestrial life if they were to ever come across this record (NASA). The purpose of these records is to give information and later with Voyager 1 and 2, tell stories of life on Earth to other life that may one day come across these records.
Currently there is six million Natives living in between the United States and Canada, and only "25,000 Blackfoot Indians between the two countries"(Reddish). In the short story "Borders" by Thomas King, the treatment of natives is shown to light in a common practice. While trying to cross the United States-Canada border to visit her oldest daughter in Salt Lake City, Utah, a woman and her youngest son, of Blackfoot Indian decent, are stopped at the border. She is questioned about her nationality and calmly states "I am Blackfoot, neither American or Canadian"(King, 918). She is not allowed to enter the United States nor Canada and is stuck in a neutral zone. News channels and Newspapers cover this story as the bureaucratic dilemma ensued, many people were shocked with the treatment of Native Americans. They are eventually allowed to pass through to the United States, however this leaves many people wondering about the treatment of Natives Americans, which King displays through conflict.
Social History is a vast term that very closely ties into the concept of history as a whole. The use of social history is necessary when it comes to fully understanding the past. Many nonfiction books and movies carry the essence of social history to give the viewers a deeper perspective of major issues. Social history is the use of personal stories that shed light on dominant issues by building public awareness.
The book Blue by Joyce Mostetter had several things that were historically accurate. Many people in Catawba County got polio. They were very sick. The ironlung was used to help people with polio breathe. There were two types of polio. One type affected their lungs and the other type affected the lower half of their body. In the story, Ann Fay is the main character who tells us about her life when her daddy was sent off to war and her brother contracted polio. Discrimination was also an issue in the story.
The book I choose to write this paper on child development is "A child Called It by Dave Pelezer". This book talks about the relationship between a alcoholic mother and her son name Dave. Who has been abused everyday; both mentally and physically. Once you read this book you will feel every little emotion that runs through Dave body. When I say this I’m talking about when his mother decides to do the abuse and the after effect feeling that Dave has. I really recommend this book to be read by mothers because it exemplifies that no matter if your single mother with one or more kids no type of abuse is ok. If you ever decided to read this book be prepared to cry, smile, and get angry. Once you finish reading I think any parent would have a new mind set before even attempting to see their child cry ever again.
Voyager 2 was launched a few months before Voyager 1 in 1977. Voyager 1 was launched faster than 2 so it over took Voyager 2. Voyager mission to Jupiter and Saturn brought Voyager 1 to Jupiter on March 5, 1979, and Saturn on November 12, 1980, Shortly after that Voyager 2 to Jupiter on July 9, 1979, and Saturn on August 25, 1981. Voyager 1 was meant to go to Saturn's rings while voyager 2 was supposed to go by Saturn right to Uranus. In 1986 Voyager 2 finally reached Uranus. Voyager 1 was going outward viewing planetary space. Voyager 1 is currently leaving the solar system on its way to the Asteroid Belt traveling at 320,000 million miles per year! They expect this great mission to last 2-3 more decades.
Carl Sagan extravagantly uses syntax, diction, and rhetorical devices in his essay “Pale Blue Dot” to describe how planet earth is just one small speck in the vast unknown area of outer space, and how we as people could be classified as insignificant to the rest of the solar system. Within the story, Sagan used astonishing examples of syntax to get the reader thinking, not only about the essay itself, but about the bigger picture. Near the end of the essay Sagan described how we have explored the wide array of planets in space, but have not settled on any by saying, ¨ Visit, yes. Settle, no ¨(Sagan 4 of 5).
Sir Herschel was studying double stars for the purpose of understanding the motion of stars and to find the means of their parallax shifts. When looking at one of the stars, he noted that this one moved completely different than the others, in fact it was moving faster, telling him that it was much closer to our planet than any other star out there. By accident, he observed a star to be which he thought as a comet.
They had duties to supervise the remaking of their destroyed planet some 2.6 million light years away – a small figure for the descendants of space voyagers – and every time they returned, the Riches celebrated. Those officers who returned would always see new progressions to their technology; like one month ago hover-vehicles and electrical-powered roads were the peak of what they could make a reality of it. The next three months roads became sprint tracks for training athletes and vehicles go through gravity-defying tubes in the sky – which was many times faster than the
In the video "Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan, he talks about the experiences we had on this "blue" dot that every religion, hunter, gatherer, mother, father, corrupt politician and leaders lived here on this dot. I feel that we should not take the earth for granted because "the earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena." Earth is the only known planet to harbor life and we can't let it fritter away. If something were to happen to earth then every species would be in grave danger, so for us we should start to embellish the planet for generations to come. I think Carl Sagan made this video to show how small our world is in this vast universe. We can't settle anywhere else since there's no other place with life, so we must make our stand
mark on Jupiter and even bigger impact on Earth. In 1994 a recently identified comet
The Voyager missions are still going on today. After forty years of space travel, they have withstood a lot. Both spacecraft have crossed over the termination shock, which is the boundary where the Sun’s influence is not present.
Many speculate that the idea of voyaging across the universe to other stars is straightforward as it portrayed this way in
