The Lemonade Cleanse
In the article, “The Paleo Diet” by Loren Cordain, the author talks about America’s fascination with diet fads, telling readers about their widespread appeal as a “fix-all” for America’s health problems and obesity. I have to admit, like a lot of people, I am a bandwagon jumper. Whether this new fad be a new fashion trend or a new video game sensation, chances are that I’ve tried it. And new diet fads are no exception for me.
One of the things that has become popular today is the cleanse. Cleanses can take many forms, but the main function of these is to detox the body. Many scientists, such as Dr. Joy Dubost, a dietitian and food scientist, warn people to shy away from such cleanses that claim to give the body a total detox. Dubost states that, “Your body has built-in mechanisms for detoxification, including your liver, kidneys, and gastrointestinal system.” Going on a cleanse is not going to aide these bodily systems in doing their job. These are short-term diets that often consist solely of liquids that contain very little caloric value and can often make going on a cleanse dangerous.
As a child, like many American children, I ate relatively unhealthily. For breakfast I would have sugary cereal and lunch and dinner usually followed up with something equally bad for my health.
