On the subject of rage, an attack on Kino in the book was not the only attack. The malicious pearl causes family to go against family. Juana knows that this pearl has brought the family bond down so she decided to grab it and leave the house. For this reason, Kino strikes at his beloved wife."He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side." (59) Kino doesn't care about the harm he is giving to his family, his mind is only focused on that one pearl. Owing to the fact that Kino is a man, Juana does nothing in defense. "She knew there was murder in him, and it was all right; she had accepted it, and she would not resist or even protest." (59) She showed no sign expostulation
Family is a strong connection to life. I feel that family roles in the book The Pearl show how they can affect the main character such as, Kino with the problems that he’s going through. In the book Kino murders a man with his knife in chapter five. The loyalty with Kino and his family members is that the all support him if he make any decisions on his own. Even though, Kino wants to make his own decisions he also want support from Juana and Juan to make sure he’s doing the right actions. Juan and Kino are true family members and his loyalty to Kino are capable by helping him shield Kino from committing murder even though it’s a crime. It is appropriate for Juana to take submissive to Kino because when taking a massive problem such as, murder
Kino’s avaricious actions lead to the downfall of his family, but his wife held it together with a great deal of effort. Juana tried to get rid of the pearl by throwing it back in the ocean, but Kino saw her before she could do it. He was outraged and he attacked her, punching her face. She then realized that in
Kino and Juana had different points of views about the meaning of the pearl. Although the pearl could change their lives completely, Juana knew since the beginning that pearl even though its value, was a bad thing. However, Kino did not agree with her perspective and created a lot of expectations in which caused their lives to be miserable and severely affected by his actions. The pearl was a sin, it attracted the bad and all of the things that could cause a feeling of pain, hostility, jealousy, pride, and even destruction. But still, with all that and all of the warnings that Juana gave it to Kino, he still thought that the pearl was capable of doing a miracle, curing his son, and giving his family a better life than they ever did before.
They were still loyal to him, even though he was becoming another person. Since Both Juana (Kino’s wife) and Juan (his brother) just supported his actions it allowed Kino to just continue his demands with the pearl. It allowed him to be more and more greedy and they just accepted the person he was becoming. Kino wasn't aware of all the actions he was making, just because his family supported him. Like I said, in the book Kino killed someone who was trying to steal the pearl. The first person he came was his brother, Juan. Juan was being a loyal brother and didn’t turn him in even though what Kino did was wrong. In my opinion, I didn’t think that was a right choice to make. Even though Kino was family to Juan, what Kino did was still illegal. If I were to be in Juan position, I would of turned in Kino. Just to keep the town safe and it would help Kino to be finally aware of the actions and past decisions he made. In one of the chapters, it showed Juana telling Kino to get rid of the pearl but Kino of course didn’t want to. Juana didn’t say anything, she was being
Patriarchal values are also evident in The Pearl. The male, in this case, Kino, is the leader of the household. He is dominant, he is the decision-maker, and the family’s welfare rests solely on his shoulders. The female, on the other hand, is submissive, deferent, and nearly always silent. She walks behind him, not beside him as his equal. Recognising the evil of the pearl Juana attempts to throw the pearl back into the Gulf, Kino asserts his power and strikes her, she does not complain — in fact, she accepts his beating of her as proper and justified and even gets up to care for him immediately
In “THE PEARL” family plays a crucial role in Kino’s journey, Kino confronts many obstacles when overcome with greed and his path of monomania, along this path he finds that his family will support him unconditionally. The loyalty of Kino’s family members brings Kino to a realization of his monomania and he decides to throw the pearl in the ocean. Juan Tomas is correct to shield Kino from the law because he wants to protect Kino and help him on his path to a better life for his family, even though Kino committed murder, his actions were in self defense and is morally sound. I believe that Juana is not correct to be submissive to kino and that she should have been more assertive with her ideas to protect her family from Kino’s actions and prevent
First of all, Kino changed drastically from the beginning to the end of the novela. Kino went from kind-hearted person to a selfish person. For example in Chapter 5, “He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders and he kicked her in the side” (58). Kino used to love Juana but after he beat
Throughout the entire book it is obvious that Kino has little respect for Juana’s opinions. He ignores her input anytime they go against him or his dreams of selling the pearl. When Juana tries to warn Kino that the pearl is evil, Kino does
Kino was a man simply looking to improve his family's way of living using the pearl. Domestic/Spousal abuse means “willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another.” However, Kino and Juana were never legally married. Furthermore, Kino only looked for what was best when it came to improving his family's well being. Kino's mind had considered in the past and had given up as impossible. In the pearl, he saw Juana and Coyotito and himself standing and kneeling at the high altar, and they were being married now that they could pay. Kino was not legally married so what he did does not fall
In Kino’s life greed ruins his life by Damaging his relationships and ruining his peaceful life. It tells us in the novella chapter 5 “He Struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders…” (58)Before this happened people and their greed kept trying to steal the pearl and were hurting kKino. Juana kept trying to tell Kino that the pearl was evil and needed to be destroyed or it
Before finding the pearl, Kino never needed the pearl since he had his family and that all he wants. Also Kino was fine with the way he lived and he was never violent toward any of his people as shown here, “Kino closed his eyes again to listen to his music. Perhaps he alone did this and perhaps all of his people did it,” this proves that Kino is able to relax and clear his mind. Although he did have anger issues he never used it to hurt anyone except the scorpion. However, that changes when he finds the pearl.
An example of Kino and his family being target by those who mean harm to them is when Kino, Juana, and Coyotito were all sleeping at night when all of a sudden Kino was attacked by a dark one outside of his brush house. Kino, Juana, and rest of the village were coming back from the pearl buyers who stated the pearl had no value. Kinso was disappointed, when he then walked out of the brush house, when Juana heard the attack. “Kino lay on the ground, struggling to rise, and there was no one near distances”(56). After these sentences, the author proceeds to tell the audience that Kino can feel the evil around him. This piece of evidence shows that Kino is a victim in which he was being bright for have a pearl that could possibly change his life. After Kino’s beating, Juana began to realize that the pearl is evil and will curse her family. Her thinking then leads to events later in the story. The oppression Kino received creates a long lasting taste of the pearl in the family’s mouths. While Kino, Juana, and Juan are realizing that the pearl is evil, the pearl begins to change Kino, and for the most part, the
From the fear of someone stealing his pearl, Kino tries to guard it no matter what, but this got out of hand once he oppresses others. In this quote, “He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side. In the pale light he could see the little waves break over her, and her skirt floated about and clung to her legs as the water receded”(59). Once Kino is asleep waiting to go to the capital, Juana tries to throw the pearl back into the ocean at dawn so they can escape the evil, and live peacefully. Also Juana and Kino holds a conversation ,“‘Hush,’ she said. Here is your pearl I found it in the path. Can you hear me now? Here is your pearl. Can you understand? You have killed a man….”’(61) Unknowingly Kino kills people to save the pearl just from his greed and becomes abusive towards Juana, his wife. Murder is significantly shown in his eyes and now there is no way for Kino to escape. Although Kino is going through oppression even at this moment, he has gained power greed and evil during the past few days oppressing others with this. If only Kino was to give up on the pearl at this moment Coyotito would have never died in the end. The main reason that Coyotito died was because he was trying to get the best price from the capital. However, while going there the hunters killed
Juano suggests that they should throw the pearl back into the water because of the terrible things that it has done to their family. By this point, Kino has also been engulfed by greed, and disagrees with her, wanting to keep the pearl so his family can be rich and so he can afford a good education for his son. In the night while Kino is sleeping, Juana takes the pearl outside to throw back into the ocean. Kino wakes up and when he finds out, he is flooded with anger. In the book, it is described that, “He leaped at her and caught her arm and wrenched the pearl from her. He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in her side” (59). This shows that greed for the pearl made him hurt his own
In the beginning of The Pearl there is tranquility and peace with what is happening to Kino and his family. That the natives of the village were fine on how the wealthy people treated them because they could do nothing about it and that's how they have always lived. If indians had their family with them they could overcome anything and would protect them at any cost to get the best for them. Before they had changed in their lives Kino, Juana and Coyotito life they thought only positively. “Kino’s eyes opened, and he looked first at the lightening square which was the door and then he looked at the hanging box where Coyotito slept. And last he turned his head to Juana, his wife, who lay beside him on the mat…”. First reaction was to look at the door which shows protection for family, trying to make the best decisions for them. Then looks at his son to insure that he has a better future than them so he can succeed in life. After that Kino looks that his wife who motivates and supports him in anyway to help them survive. “That does not mean that there was no personal song. In Kino’s head there was a song now, clear soft, and if he had been able to
