In the article “Women’s Human Rights and Gender Equality’’ i read about how Women’s rights are the fundamental human rights that were enshrined by the United Nations for every human being on the planet nearly 70 years ago. These rights include to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated ; to vote and to earn a fair and equal wage. A famous saying goes “Women’s rights are human rights” meaning, women all around the world are entitled to all of these rights, but yet there are women and girls who are still denied these rights, often simply because of their gender. Winning these rights for women isn’t all, it’s also about changing how countries and communities works and their perspectives on gender equality. Global Fund for Women exists to support the tireless and courageous efforts of women’s groups who work every day to win rights for women and girls. These groups are working to ensure women can own property, vote, run for office, get paid fair wages, and live free from violence – including domestic violence, sexual assault. Solnit’s choice of topic and the context surrounding it stem from her knowledge of the extent of the issue and the overarching repercussions that could result. Through her topic choice and her selection of details, Solnit seeks to reveal the depth of the inequality throughout society. In order to do this, one of the first strategies that Solnit employs is to use examples from all around the globe. She writes this essay under the assumption that the audience is largely uninformed about the sheer extent of violence against women, and is working to remedy that situation. By pointing out the ways in which other countries routinely and systematically discriminate against women, Solnit places under scrutiny the idea that women’s rights are no longer an issue in the United States. Additionally, by presenting her audience with an abundance of headlines and examples of this discrimination, she further validates her argument and purpose of shedding light onto the issue. The struggle for women to be treated equally as humans never ends. In fact, great strides have been made since the mid-19th century: the first organization to advocate for and draw the world’s attention to females’ equality – namely the International Council of Women – was formed by the U.S and several countries in Europe. And, fortunately, dedication to pursuing women’s rights is still unchanging even at present. Hillary Clinton, a well-known American politician, has devoted her career to supporting women: selected as the first chair of the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession, she aimed to provide all women equality and to secure their full and equal political participation in democracy. At the U.N. 4th World Conference on Women’s Plenary Session, held in Beijing, China, in 1995, Hillary Clinton’s effective use of repetition in her speech, “Women’s Rights are Human Rights,” calls the general public’s attention to the importance of women’s equality, emphasizing women’s worldwide contribution and the violence from which women have suffered.

Gender inequality has engulfed the United States and placed copious varying roles onto the male and female sexes. According to Leila Aboulela, Minaret, “All through life there were distinctions - toilets for men, toilets for women; clothes for men, clothes for women - then, at the end, the graves are identical.” Discrimination places women into different roles and takes away numerous privileges. However in America today after more than a century of struggles by dedicated activists who fought to alter these ideals and gain further rights, the perception of women in society and their contributions to society have been greatly transformed.

The rights and opportunities are different but the feelings in the hearts of those fighting and living to support women’s rights have never changed. Some of the issues women are fighting today are poverty and hunger with the largest number of homeless being women and children. The continuing wage gap and the fact that women make 77 cents to every dollar men do, violence against women, with the staggering statistic that there are 270,000 rapes or sexual assaults a year. Women are treated poorly in prison with 70% subject to rape, extortion, and groping and denied medical resources and treatment, as well as human trafficking and sex slavery, which has a 32 billion dollar annual income. Ann Levine and Naomi Neft's article "Women in Today's World" asserts that although the status of females in developed countries has vastly improved with society's movement toward a more gender-equal condition, the majority of women remain in a dire state of oppression. Women are more impoverished, illiterate, unemployed, and more destitute than men. In spite of some women's improvements under developed countries' more progressive, gender-equal regimes, education, literacy rates, employment, civil rights, health, and public representation remain substandard for most of the world's females.

Yet the only difference about a movement for gender equality is that it is not only a domestic threat, but a global one. This makes the task at hand much more daunting. It’s easy to write an essay about a book that expressed the injustices done unto women around the world. It’s easy to inspire a teacher with fancy words for a good grade. But to really spark a change, to really affect someone is not as easy.

Women all over the world have been mistreated for more than a century. It has been exploited throughout the world as how “women aren’t currently treated the same as men in certain situations” but it is far more beyond that. Only half of the world seems to at least know what is really happening behind the curtain. Ambiguous people have manipulated the very much realness with what is exactly taking place in our society. In this essay, I will be talking about the following things; Inequity in the workplace, “Asking for it”, Violence against women globally, Education, and The psychology of it all. These five topics need to be demanded attention. Our younger generation needs to be cognizant of what has been going on for many millenniums. Girls and women should be able to walk around at night and not be afraid, nor should they be afraid to oppose another man. There is no real justification on why women should be treated like this but there is plenty of justification on why they shouldn 't, so genuinely why is this problem happening? Inequality happens all over the world in many different kinds of forms towards different kinds of people depending on one’s identity. People all over the world stand up against inequality in their own ways of fighting for what they believe is right. “A gender-equal society would be one where the word ‘gender’ does not exist: where everyone can be themselves” (Steinem). Gloria Steinem took a stand against patriarchy by taking part in the Women’s Action Alliance, National Women’s Political Caucus and creating the Ms. magazine, and these actions resulted in the manifestation of gender greater equality and changes the ways of how others views the diversity between genders.

For hundreds of years men have been known to make a living to provide their family with money and opportunity. Nowadays it is rare to find middle class mothers who don’t provide their family with some kind of income; it’s also more common in the past twenty years to find single mothers who only support their family with one salary. This is making people more aware that women are capable and are able to provide equal opportunity. Australia has experienced their first ever female prime minister, Julia Gillard’s role of authority didn’t last that long but this is promoting women of higher authority and is attempting to provide people with visuals to soon accept that men and women are both as capable as the another and gender discrimination is something of the past. It has been said for many years that no matter the gender. People are provided with equal opportunity, this is not the case in many developing countries. Governments need to work together to provide and educate other countries of the consequences that should be put in place for gender discrimination, physical and mental abuse. World leaders should create a law to prevent this and each workplace should provide equal opportunity for men and women. If this law is disobey there should be a punishment the best suits each individual society for example western culture there should be a fine and possible criminal offence

Cassandra Clifford states in her article “Are Girls still marginalized? Discrimination and Gender Inequality in Today’s Society”, “Woman and girls are abused by their husbands and fathers, young girls are exploited by sex tourism and trafficking, girls in many countries are forced into arranged marriages at early ages. Twice as many women are illiterate as men, due to the large gap in education, and girls are still less likely to get jobs and excel in the work place than boys.” She describes some of the issues that women face today around the world. These issues are what keep society from coming together to form a better world.
