According to the Bible, there are 4 main aspects of being human.
Humans are a creation of God. God is creative, and has given humans the ability to communicate, reason, and have relationships on not just a physical level but also on a spiritual level. Charlie, the main character of “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower”, like God, is creative. Throughout the movie, Charlie is seen writing and making various mixtapes. Charlie frequently writes “notes to a friend” and this can be paralleled as praying to God. Humans are social beings and therefore when faced with problems most choose to voice their struggles. Patrick, a friend of Charlie’s went through a rough time during the movie and feels a need to voice his struggles to Charlie, even if it was just for

Throughout the story, many of the characters experience a deep sense of longing for things that go beyond getting into college or university but instead for their inner struggles to end and to finally find peace. However, Charlie cherishes many of his memories and experiences great joy when he drives through “the tunnel” with Patrick and Sam. He describes that he felt infinite in that moment. Humans are good. Although humans make many mistakes, we all strive to be good and do the right thing. Charlie lacks a sort of self-centredness that allows him to be especially kind to everyone. Although he strives to do what’s best, he is constantly sacrificing his own well-being for the comfort of others. An example of this is when he enters into a relationship with Mary-Elizabeth. Despite not being attracted to her, Charlie fears hurting her and therefore refuses to break up with her despite it causing him to struggle emotionally. Sam, Charlie’s friend is also an excellent example of striving to be a good human being as she looks past Charlie’s dark history and doesn’t judge him for it. The final statement the Bible says about being human is that humans are
Charlie’s friendship with Jasper Jones, his parents, and witnessing the intolerance of Corrigan are the three biggest factors in Charlie's development from innocence to experience. Jasper Jones exposed him to fear and forced him to be brave and face his fears, the rampant intolerance in Corrigan, both racial and otherwise, exposed him to the injustices of the real world, and his relationship with his parents taught him to be diplomatic and control his
Charlie is very far from what most people call normal: he is shy, introverted, awkward, independent, paranoid, confused, respectable and kind; showing many examples of this throughout the book. He keeps to himself for the most part and is constantly in his own head. Aside from the many negative traits he also has many attributes: he is a loyal friend and listens to the people he talks to, he is a caring person and comforts those in need. However he has his flaws as well: Charlie can get very angry and upset at others which causes him to lash out with violence or sadness, he is extremely sensitive, crying frequently and constantly questioning himself. Several of his peers labeled him as nerd or a weirdo, which damaged
Charlie also learns love in a way to get him better and set him for life. When his mother makes him dig the hole and fill it back up, this is harsh love and will prepare Charlie for later life as it will teach him respect and manners. Charlie deep down knows this is what his mother is trying to teach him, but at the time he just wanted to believe that she was trying to punish, annoy and make him work. Charlie also discovers the love of peers. When Charlie is dragged into the drama of Laura by Jasper he didn’t know if to trust him. But when the truth came out and Jasper wasn’t a part of it, Charlie loved him for telling the truth and being a good friend. Also when Jasper asks Charlie to leave Corrigan with him when they are older, Charlie loves Jasper for the respect and friendship he is giving him. Charlie also sees the act of false love. This is seen by Charlie when he witnesses his mother cheating on his father in the backseat of a car. Charlie knew his parents relationship wasn’t going too well, but he didn’t expect this. He uses this to overcome his mothers power over him. But this example shows us how Charlie has learnt the difference between real love and false love, this will only help him later in life.
Charlie begins to hang out with Sam and Patrick and is getting in the routine of going to football games and then going out afterwards to celebrate. Afterwhile he catches feelings for Sam and the way he expresses them further deepens our understanding of his depression. Instead of going with the flow and not telling her about the dreams he had about her, he professes his love for her in the form of sharing his dreams and telling her just how he feels. Perhaps, this isn’t all his fault because when Sam tells him that she’s too old for him, he becomes obsessed with his love for her and can’t stop thinking about how perfect she is in his eyes. The only thing this confession has done for him is make his feelings grow and send him in a downward spiral of
According to (Ward, 2010), a human is defined as the ability to speak, abstract reasoning and interbreeding. However, the Holy Bible teaches us that humans were created to praise and glorify the Lord. In fact, according to (1 Corinthians 10:31, ASV), God wants us to glorify him in all things. He also wants us to fear him and follow his commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13, ASV). Due to the Holy Bible consisting of, parables, commandments and stories that instruct Christians on the correct way to act, it is like a blue print or a map that guides us through life and eventually to
At the beginning, Charlie is without friends and is rather alone. He is very gifted and quite an overthinker which expels him from the usual teenage social groups. This changes, however, when he meets Sam and Patrick at a football game. They expose him to all new experiences. Resulting from his new friendships, is his relationship with Mary Elizabeth, his experimentations with drugs, and new knowledge of being a person. During this time, he is increasingly happy because Charlie was finally living.
We get to know Charlie through letters he writes to the unnamed “friend”. Charlie has a lot of internal conflicts which he deals with every second of his life. He deals with his best friend’s death and his aunt’s death and his past with his aunt. These internal conflicts make him withdrawn. Moreover, Charlie has a need to tell someone about his life and thoughts, maybe to feel less lonely. In the very start of the story Charlie expresses: “I don’t want you to find me”, which emphasizes that he does not want a concrete person to help him, he only needs to let his thoughts out. Charlie is absolutely a dynamic and round character. He is an intelligent, observant high school freshman who hides his beautiful personality because of having dealt with a lot of trauma in his childhood. Through the relationships he develops over the course of the school year, Charlie suddenly comes out of his shell and grows as a person. For example, what he tells Sam who has also dealt with a troubled past: “Even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there”. However, it is not until the very end of the book that he uncovers the repressed memories of sexual abuse of his aunt that are at the foundation of his internal
The biggest point that is revealed about human nature from the first two chapters of Genesis is that humans are made in the image of God. This is seen within the creation narrative since everything that God made was good which included the humans. Also, it is because of their original human nature being in the image of God as to why humans are viewed as being the pinnacle of creation, as shown since they receive the most attention of all of the parts of creation (Diffey, 2015).
Also Charlie is one of the most menial kids around he would never go with Jasper if he didn’t have courage. All of the choices Charlie makes impact his life in some way for example; if he didn’t go with Jasper his life would be normal, but because of one simple decision his life changed forever with the fact that he hid a body hovering over him at all times.
The relationship with charlie and how he treats him as a person and how he helps him get through tough times is important because it shows he is always there for him. One supporting quote is. “I saw Patrick. The best thing about Patrick is that even when you’re in a hospital, he doesn’t change. He just cracks jokes to make you feel better instead of asking you questions about feeling worse" (Chbosky, August 23, 1992). That shows that Patrick cares because It shows that he is always there for Charlie and that Patrick wants Charlie to feel better. The second supporting quote is. “You see things. You keep quiet about them. And you understand.” Patrick can trust Charlie and how there relationship is growing to be able to tell each other thinks and secrets about themselves. Patrick
What does it mean to be human? Humans are the embodiment of God. Man was placed on this Earth to enjoy the wonders that God created for him. According to Genesis 1:26-30, God granted mankind dominion over all living creatures on the earth. The animals and plants were created as food to nourish our bodies. Genesis 9:1-5 also speaks of how humans rule over the plants and animals. Humans were intended to multiply and populate the Earth (Holy Bible: American Standard Version,
As one immerses themselves into Charlie’s journal or rather, progress reports, they began to learn much about Charlie and his character. Through these reports, one can gather that Charlie desires to be smart like everyone else (Keyes 1), strives to accomplish any task that he is given (Keyes 4), is very self-motivated (Keyes 9) and,
He’s putting a façade on to win back his daughter despite the bitter and angry tendencies that remain. Charlie’s final words do little to assure the reader that he is a changed man. His want for his daughter is shifted back to his guilt over his wife’s death. He believes that “Helen wouldn't have wanted him to be so alone”
“And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.” (Chbosky 39) Charlie says this when he is hanging out with Sam and Patrick driving through a bridge and playing there favorite music out loud, he felt good inside everything from the outside world had escaped him and he was just there with his friends. Charlie is overall a good friend who always finds the best in people and his friends helped him to come out of a very dark place in his life.
In the book of Genesis when it speaks of man being made in the image of God, what is seen is that just as God created the earth, we can give form to the formless. We can make a date with another, and we can plan to do something at a certain time. Humans unlike any other creature can describe an exciting experience, or tell a scary story. Through speech we can say, "I don't know," which is the first step to gaining understanding and knowledge. Humans are more than just mere creatures of nature because of the art of remembering, recalling, and through language either written or spoken.
