Many disabled families fear that they will be separated if deemed “too disabled” to care for one-another, which often prevents them from “coming-out” or asking for help (Wilde & Hoskinson-Clark, 2014, p. 57. Opening communication channels, and fielding trust and creating supportive foundations by directly considering what individual disabled families and want can largely improve life for those with disabilities and impact their perception and acceptance by the larger society. Disability has been a difficult topic of society for years. Many people find discomfort in the presence of the disabled and many feel pity for those who are disabled. Back in the 1800s, the disabled were perceived as unable to contribute to society, often forced to undergo sterilization, and forced into institutions and asylums (“A Brief History”). In fact, this treatment of the disabled and mentally ill has been persistent until somewhat recently, when the Civil Rights movement took place, and those with disabilities decided to take a stand for their rights. Disability is a definition of a physical or mental condition which impacts on a person’s movements, activities and senses. People with disabilities were informed of bias and disadvantages compared to an ordinary person. There are many biases and prejudices contributed to the discrimination of individuals with a disability. Partly because of social connotations the disabled people are useless, cannot work. In fact, these extraordinary people always bring and do incredible things. They not only overcome their grim fate, but also bring good things to life, especially those who are perfectly considering better than an ordinary person, they are not aware of the capacity of individuals disabilities with them characteristics such as loyalty, dedication, and hard work.

Society is set up into a hierarchical triangle that essentially determines social class. A social class is any person or group of people with the same educational, social or economical status. Social class can be broken down into many different categories such as race, age, gender, economic status, educational status and many more. Social class can be measured in many different ways such as financial status, family values, appearance, and demeanor. In America there are six main economical social classes which are the: Very poor, Poor, Working class, Middle class, Upper middle class, and the ruling class.

Disability in a socio-cultural context can be defined as "a barrier to participation of people with impairments or chronic illnesses arising from an interaction of the impairment or illness with discriminatory attitudes, cultures, policies or institutional practices" (Booth, 2000). The traditional view of disability often focuses on the individual, highlighting incapacities or failings, a defect, or impairment. This focus creates obstacles to participation on equal terms since an individual who seems to lack certain capacities may not be able to attain autonomy.

Social class refers to the system of stratification of the different groups of people in a society. These different forms of classification are, in most instances, based on gender ethnicity and age. Social class makes everyone’s lives extremely different. For example: How long one can expect to live. In a wide range of ways, from success, to one’s health class, social class influences people’s lives (Grusky,2003).

Throughout history, the disabled community has fought for not only equal rights, but also equal opportunities and treatment. No one group has fought as hard for acceptance as those with disabilities, yet their efforts are often minimized by society. Although both Berger and Clare both aim to analyze the experiences of the disabled community through the lens of the social model, Berger takes a more scholarly approach, while Clare uses anecdotal evidence to display the unjust judgment and suffering of people with disabilities. To understand disability through a social lens is to fully grasp all aspects of disability. It is not just a physical ailment, but also a social issue of discrimination and oppression. From the beginning of human history to the 1700s, people with disabilities were often treated badly or even killed for being different. Typically shunned by early societies, (Special Education, 2014) people with disabilities were pushed aside, abandoned as babies, or even tortured for being different (Raymond, 2012). Stigma associated with difference and superstition often convinced people that cognitive or physical differences were the work of demons and that these people needed to be executed, exorcised, or exiled. People with severe physical disabilities would not have survived during this time because of the lack of medical care, and people with mild disabilities could most likely hide from being identified simply because of the lack of public education and low literacy rates (Raymond, 2012).

Social class is an important part of how the United States functions. Because the United States tries to run on a laissez-faire based marketing system, there are social classes that differ based on economic prosperity. The people who work hard and are smart rise to the top and usually become part of the upper or middle class. People who don 't work hard or are lacking an intellectual capabilities fall to the lower class. Social class stratification is important to understand because social class can affect who we are and how we interact with others. People in different social classes tend not to interact because a poor person can not afford to eat out at a place where wealthy person would eat. Also, wealthy people tend to form their own social groups because they have a large amount of money to go places and do things with. These differences between social classes and the separation that occurs is vital to understanding the way society functions.

Social class is a division of a society based on social and economic status. Why do we have social class in our societies? For what purpose does social class, even exist? From India, to the United States, many different societies have different social classes and systems. So why does social class and system differ from place to place? Numerous individuals believe disability makes a person helpless and incapable of obtaining a life full of accomplishments. Catherine Kudlick has proved that this is not the case; anyone with a disability has the opportunity to achieve their life goals. Kudlick makes it clear that people without disabilities need to educate themselves on disabilities and incorporate it into every aspect of the world. To do this, it needs to be made a priority to provide accessibility in all buildings, corporations, presentations, online websites, and every event held. This will make a more welcoming environment to all kinds of people with disabilities and will encourage them to participate in educational programs and activities. Catherine Kudlick has struggled with accepting her disability throughout her life. She learned how to change her perspective and in doing so she is dedicated to change the perspective of others and the way disability is viewed, in general.

One of the dilemmas we, as a society, are faced with is how to help our disabled population. There are many disable people in our country, both, physically or mentally, and they need assistance, and someone to help guide them in finding that assistance. It is my desire to become one of those individuals, providing assistance to those who need it.
