The novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers is the book I chose to read and do my essay on. The genre Walter chose for the book Monster is realistic fiction. The novel was published in 1999 which is a year after I was borning. The reason why I chose this Novel is because a teacher recommended the book to me a couple year ago but, I never got a chance to read it. I always assumed the book was good because it won three awards. The first award the book won was the National Book Award for young people’s literature. The second award the book won was the Michael L. Printz Awards. The third award the book won was called the Coretta Scott King Award Honor all in which the book won in the same year 2000. The book is told from the perspective of a young african american teenager named steve harmon. Steve lives in harlem where the story takes place. One night steve chose to hang with a bad group of friends and was in a robbery. During the robbery one of Steve’s friend kills the cashier. Now Steve is in jail and going back and forth to court hoping to be proven not guilty of felony murder. Steve and I lives are alike in many different ways although we come from different backgrounds.

In the essay Plain Truth, James Chalmers believed that the colonies could not win a war against England, because Chalmers believes that America’s army is not strong enough to fight against the British. Chalmers recalls from Common Sense how it mentions that America has the largest disciplined army under the heaven, but if that is the truth, America wouldn’t need support from either Spain or French. Also, neither Spain or French would help America, because if they did, it would encourage their royal colonies to fight for their independence as well. America by its own power at this stage without the help of other countries would not be strong enough to be able to go against the British. Chalmer also mentions how common people would not fight

Selfishness, a quality that best shines in times of isolation, forces others to become aware of one's need for attention. Patrick Ness portrays this trait in A Monster Calls in a way that makes the readers realize that the burden of a secret is too great for anyone of any age to carry. Conor O'Malley is thirteen, but his experiences and hardships are ones that those who are beyond their years have not necessarily needed to overcome. Taking into account his mother's worsening condition, he does not want to let his surroundings affect him more than they already have. Under the influence of the Monster, Conor allows himself to act in accordance to his situation instead of keeping everything to himself without an outlet for his emotions. Conor’s selfishness, which is seen throughout the novel, affects his interactions with others in drawing out their flaws. To retaliate against his father, Lily and his grandma for putting him in situations that cause him suffering, Conor must act in this selfish manner regardless of the consequences.

        The poem The Calling written by Luis J. Rodriguez is about the speaker describing how he has possibly lived with a mental illness while he spent some time of his life alone in his home. In the first stanza, he mentions how he whittled away his youth in jail cells which could resemble that his house is a jail cell and he’s trapped. While he was locked up in his room, he had possibly thought about what has happened in his life and it has brought some sense to him. The speaker in the poem used repetition when he repeats the same word barrio in the poem. The tone of this poem may be gloomy and mournful, but towards the fifth through eighth stanza the tone seems to lighten up when he mentions escaping

Patrick Ness' A Monster Calls, is truly inspiring and an emotional novel for audiences that changes ones’ perspective towards facing death. Conor’s mother affects the main character of the story (Conor) due to the fact that she has cancer. Conor seems to be maintained and calm since Conors mom is still alive. Because of her sickness, Conor was reunited with his family once again, but he wishes they would both leave since his father and grandmother are trying to make him understand that there’s a good chance she won’t make it. “Monster”, a 1999 novel by Walter Dean Myers, is an incredible story told through the fictional movie script of a boy on trial for murder and robbery. It’s an intriguing read that triggers deep thought and empowers the hearts within all. A book notable for its messages against implicit bias, encouraging the notion of truth within yourself, you can speculate on its events from start to finish and beyond. As Keanu Reeves once said, “Grief changes shapes, but it never ends” (“Tragic”). When it comes to grief there are usually five shapes or stages that people go through: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and, finally, acceptance. The book A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness, is about a young boy who is struggling with school, bullies, friends, and family when his mother develops a terminal illness. He is visited by the monster, a massive yew tree, who comes alive to teach Conor the ways of the world. He also teaches Conor the truth in order to move past his mother’s sickness. Ness shows how people in both literature and real life tend to go through five stages of grief while dealing with a loved one who has a terminal illness because of the overwhelming lamentation it inflicts.

New York author, Alan Greenspan, here is explaining that the threat fear presents is really no different than the state of intensity caused by euphoria. In Andrew J. Hoffman’s anthology, Monsters, there is substantial evidence that both fear and euphoria are inflicted upon men, by female monsters. The two threats men typically face against women are temptation and emasculation. Thus, in mythology and folklore, female monsters exemplify the impulse of desire (sexually) for men, and male weakness. These are creature that are lusted after and yet, still feared because of their power. Men find female monsters both fearsome and euphoric and will always threaten their dominance and control.

In Paul Trout’s “Why We Invented Monster”, he explores the ways of how the term “monsters” came to be from our ancestors and how people view monsters. Trout starts off by naming different types of monsters from basically every myth you can possibly think of. He continues by saying that even though there are many different types of monsters, they all have one thing in common. They eat humans. Cue the ominous music in the background.

Throughout history we see monsters taking many different shapes and sizes. Whether it be a ghoul in the midst of a cold nightly stroll or a mass genocide, monsters are lurking everywhere and our perception of what monsters truly are, is enhancing their growth as a force with which to be reckoned. Fear of the unknown is seen throughout time, but as humans progress we are finding that things we once were afraid of we are less frightening than they once were. Monsters can evoke fear in their targeted victims rather than physically harm their victims. Monster by Walter Dean Myers evolves on the fact that being tough is key within life. Steve Harmon, 16 year old boy, black male, is being accused of felony murder. A court case involving James King and Steve Harmon is taking place to see who is not guilty. Steve writes in his journal of the experiences in jail. Through Steve’s writing it is clear that one must be strong and avoid showing weakness.

This book explores lots of different emotions, all tying into each other. Each emotions feeds off others, and different people experience different feelings. Emotion is a major part of the book because, while it doesn’t often go that deep into it, it is the driving force for lots of the plot

In history, monsters are portrayed as vicious creatures with frightening superpowers and other inhuman characteristics. In A Monster Calls, monsters play a significant role in the story. Although they're just imaginary creatures created by the human's imagination, they have a great purpose in the creation of the story, they are often used to tell the story, show fear, and scare. In the case of A Monster Calls, the Yew Tree monster takes Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth. For example, the quote from A Monster Calls "It is not what I want from you, Conor O’Malley, it said. It is what you want from me."[page.10], he is trying to help Conor and often the monster can be seen friendly and helping Conor with his life by experiences. Conor has an egregious life, while his father moved away, his mother is dying because of cancer and cannot help him on the things she wanted to help, this monster helps change his life in exchange for the truth or the his “nightmare.” While getting bullied and abused in school Conor still maintains a calm life. At 12:07 the monster arrives to talk to him every night and takes to tell three stories and then he has tell his nightmare, but Conor loses his mom because of the nightmare monster this was the nightmare he saw every day, but when he woke up, he went to hold his mom for the last time. As the quote from A Monster Calls states her death “Conor held tightly onto his mother, and by doing so, he could finally let her go.”

“The short term pain of accepting the truth is much better than the long term pain of believing an illusion”- unknown. In the novel A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, a 13 year old boy, Conor O'malley, deals with inner struggles when accepting his mother’s fatal illness. Conor experiences hardship when coming to terms with the truth so he chooses to suppress it with denial and this worsens his grieving process. Conor undergoes a troubling state where he is lonesome and unwillingly expresses himself through violence and a series of emotional collapses. The teen’s way of coping is not beneficial to either him or is family. A monster in the form of a Yew tree comes to visit Conor and guides him towards the acceptance of truth. Although Conor is not oblivious towards his mother’s imminent death, he must learn from the monster to fully accept the condition she is in, in order to move on with his life. The Yew tree monster guides Conor through storytelling, thus teaching him the importance of accepting the truth. At times, the monster takes a step back and this allows Conor to discover the importance of truth slowly and independently. The way the monster approaches Conor and the tactics he uses to enlighten him are the main reasons Conor develops throughout the novel as an individual.
