The Prayer Of Jesus And The Deaf Man Who Had A Speech Problem

After reading Deaf Again I learned a lot of new things I didn't know about Deaf culture and was drawn in by the story of Mark Drolsbaugh. "The hardest fight a man has to fight is to live in a world where every single day someone is trying to make you someone you do not want to be " – e.e cummings. I was brought into the book immediately from this quote and realized how difficult it must have been for Mark to find his identity. He was trying to hang on to his hearing in fear of going deaf as if there was something wrong or not proper with being deaf. It took him a long time, twenty-three years to realize that the Deaf culture is receiving and it was there for him to embrace the entire time. It would be difficult to be able to hear and

McMurphy does the same. One of the patients on the ward, known as Chief hid from everyone the fact that he could hear and speak. McMurphy was the one that encouraged Chief to speak for the first time after so many years of silence, when he said, “Thank-you” (Kesey, 1962, p.217). This ultimately healed Chief of his illness. McMurphy’s actions parallel the miracles performed by Jesus.

Just as hearing people have their own culture, so do deaf people. Marriage is pretty normal for deaf people who marry other deaf people. They would have the same challenges hearing people would have in any relationship. According to Gallaudet University’s Biology Department, at least 85% of deaf people, marry another deaf person ("Marriages among the Deaf"). However, back in the late 1800’s, this was greatly discouraged, especially by a man named Alexander Graham Bell. He is most well-known for the invention of the telephone. However, most people do not know the story behind it. His mother and wife were both born deaf. This led his interest into speech and hearing and encouraged experimentation with hearing devices. He then started to teach deaf people how to speak orally through a universal alphabet invented by his father called “Visible Speech”. He was one of the leaders of the oralism movement in the deaf community. His goal was to ban sign language and remove it from existence. He believes that if an individual was in America, they should only speak English and participate only in American culture. Therefore, it worried him when he noticed that deaf people had been forming such a tight-knit group with their own language, clubs, social events, and through marriage. He wanted to outlaw it all ("Signing, Alexander Graham Bell and the NAD").

What we come to realize is that Jesus happily healed him of his sickness, but physical healing would do the man no good in the long run. Jesus wanted to give this man eternal healing. We can ask Jesus to give us all we want, but he knows that our physical needs won’t last forever. That is why He is more interested in giving us something that will last forever, a heart transformation.

In the novel “Deaf Again” by Mark Drolsbaugh, the reader is taken on a journey through the life of the author himself, from birth all the way to present day. Drolsbaugh, a once hearing child but now Deaf adult, takes readers through the struggles and situations he faced as a child born into the Deaf culture, yet still forced to try and suppress his deafness when his ability to hear started to decline. The author shares his experiences of becoming “deaf again”, and how he had to learn for himself what being Deaf really meant in regards to not just in his own life but the people in it. Drolsbaugh’s novel explores many of the issues and debates surrounding Deaf culture, while still giving his personal views and understandings on what it really means to be Deaf.

     Who is this man Jesus? Where was he from? What did he do for others and us? A great source of reference to answer this question would be someone who had direct contact with him in everyday life. Someone who saw the daily wonders he created would be the best source for information. Matthew, the apostle, is believed to have written the gospel of Matthew. He was able to experience firsthand all of the amazing miracles that Jesus performed. God inspired his words, and his gospel relates to the other three gospels in overall context. Throughout his life, Jesus performed many miracles. Examples of these miracles can be found in the Holy Bible in the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). I would have to say that my favorite miracle performed by Jesus would have to be when Jesus fed the four thousand, in Mark 8:1-13. Jesus was surrounded by a large crowd and felt compassion for them. He wanted to provide food for everyone so they would be strong enough to travel back to their homes. Throughout the New Testament are recounts of the miracles that Jesus performed to give proof that He was indeed the Son of God and the Messiah foretold of in the Old Testament. John chose to recount only seven of the many miracles that Jesus performed. He felt that these seven, more than any of the others, showed definitive proof that the Messiah, the Son of God, had come as promised.

The second sign that Jesus performed in the book of John is the healing of the nobleman’s son (4:46¬–54). Jesus performed another miracle, but how is his deity displayed. Jesus shows his deity here by healing the official’s son by simply speaking and not seeing nor touching. During this time, just like every other time in history, there have been doctors. If Jesus went to the official’s house and healed the boy, it could be possible that Jesus would be viewed as such. However, since Jesus did the miracle just by spoken word, his power must be great. In fact, He must be God.

According to Dodd what Jesus was really saying was that the new society had arrived in his own person through his teachings thus Jesus' teaching is 'inaugural eschatology'. The coming of Jesus is thus the coming of God's eternal reign. Miracles are much easier to understand if they are regarded as signs that God was creating a new society right there and then. To put these miracles into context, according to 1st century Jewish thinking, if one was ill, it was either due to their parents sins, or their own.
