The Problem Of Water Depletion

Decent Essays

Water depletion is a serious problem throughout the world, as people continue to drain water for not only irrigation, but also to provide water for the citizens of each country. This means that water is being drained from lakes, rivers, and streams; but people are also bleeding the aquifers of their water, which is an unsustainable resource. This is a serious problem for people all around the world, as countries and individuals overuse the finite resources in the groundwater. This will cause issues in the growth of crops, livestock, and will cause water shortages for people in general. The depletion of water resources has become a troubling predicament in more recent years. More and more water is being drawn up out of aquifers to grow crops, especially crops such as corn that require an abundance of water to grow; to water livestock; along with providing water for societies. This means that we are submitting aquifers to release water, which has been held for anywhere up to millions of years, at an unsustainable rate. While people recognize that fresh water resources are being depleted, many do nothing about it, as their need is the one they consider most pressing in the moment. However, some thought has gone into what can be done to keep the aquifers at sustainable levels, instead of allowing to dry out. In places such as Texas, water is not a public commodity. This means that the government does not control groundwater resources and people can demand all they can get from the aquifers. In other places such as Kansas, the governments must sign the rights to the water over to land owners, however it is hard to tell whether what they are allowed to is an amount that will allow for sustainability. (Parker, Laura. “To the Last Drop.”) California has started laws that management agencies that are locally bound will help to keep groundwater at a sustainable point. This law makes it where areas must find a way to keep the aquifer under California at a manageable position, where it will not be in danger of collapsing. (California, State of. “Groundwater Sustainability Agencies.”) More intense actions than the above have happened in other areas of the world. In a city in Australia called Perth, they are pumping
