One of the biggest challenges i’ve faced would have to be when I attended SOAR High School. SOAR High School is a very educational based school, where students are required to take college courses along with rigorous high school courses. It took a lot of thinking and debating to whether or not I should apply, I was not sure if I was ready for this opportunity, the idea of taking taking college and High School classes seemed overwhelming, however, I decided to apply. I did not attend the Preparatory School for SOAR, which meant I would be progressing from a normal Junior HIgh School into an advanced High School. Once I got accepted we had to enroll in our College courses, the process of this was really exasperating, since prior to this I never
A significant challenge that I faced that I thought I might not accomplish was in sophomore year. I believed I would not be able to pass my science class. I was almost failing the entire year but the last quarter was the worst. The teacher made a huge test that would help anyone that was almost failing and I studied every night until the test which was for about a month and a half. I was sure I would still end up failing because I wasn’t sure about many of the topics we had discussed. On testing day, we had time before the test to study even more and I had one of my friends test me with flashcards that I created; there was over one hundred of them. While taking the test, I was freaking out and ended up not answering some of the questions because
The greatest challenge I face entering college is finding the funds to go and earn my degree. Recently my family was blessed to know that my mother is expecting a baby boy. For me, finding the funds to pay for college without asking for money from my parent, so they can raise and support my baby brother, is the hardest challenge facing me.
A time that I faced a challenge was my junior year in high school. This was my hardest year academically. I felt as if three out of my five classes were impossible to pass (the other two being electives). It seemed like no matter how hard I studied or how much tutoring I received, there was no light at the end of the tunnel. Going from a straight A student with an occasional B here and there to then being in the low B range killed me. I stressed myself out tremendously over grades to where it became unhealthy. I would have migraines daily. I would come home, go straight to my room and dwell on the fact that I had no idea how to start my homework let alone complete it. I would sit there, depressed, crying my eyes out because I had nowhere to
An educational barrier I have faced is taking an Advanced Placement class. It is my last year (senior year) in high school and it is my first time taking an advanced placement class. I am taking three ap classes ap Calculus AB, ap English literature, and ap Spanish. At first, I was overwhelmed with the work our teachers talked about at the beginning of the year. I thought I was not suited for these type of classes. I would constantly think about dropping at least one or two ap classes. I did not think I would be able to keep up with the work and be in a sport at the same time along with college apps. My counselor, however, said he saw potential in me that I would be just fine and encouraged me to keep the ap classes. So I did end up keeping
The transition from high school to college has been one of my biggest challenges. Graduating from high school has caused many changes. The first challenge I have faced since graduating from high school is not seeing my close friends every day. The second obstacle in college that I have experienced is having freedom and not the micromanagement of teachers. Lastly, the bright side of my transition from high school to college is the successful career I hope to have.
Going to a new school every year was probably my biggest struggle, making new friends, trying to adapt to the new environment and the new school that has new rules as well it all was not easy there would be times that I would eat my lunch in the bathroom because of the anxiety of not knowing nobody it was hard to get use to my parents always making me move around school I got pretty mad at them about it and would end up
I have faced many challenges during my two years of high school. My most challenging academic course would have to be taking Algebra. My largest challenge in Algebra would be the test taking and quizzes in this course. I was able to meet this challenge in many ways such as focusing in class, keeping up with my work, and asking as many questions as needed.
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
An obstacle that had an affect on my academic performance was my internship. It required me to go to sleep early the night before and wake at six in the morning every Thursday. I lost a lot of time that I could have been studying but the internship is essential for my acceptance into graduate school, so it was necessary. I handled academic challenges by taking everything once step at a time rather than all of it at once and that made my life a lot easier. I wish I had known that I should be studying consistently rather than cramming 2 days before an exam. That was a big mistake of mine. I learned that the campus has lots of resources that are intended to help students succeed. I plan on being more in touch with the workshops here on campus
One major challenge that I believe I have faced is learning how to drive. This was a significant challenge to me because it was a really nerve racking experience. Most of those nerve racking moments were when my father took me out for driving lessons because of the stress that he will put on me while I was driving which made it more difficult to concentrate. Methods I used to overcoming this challenge were to calm myself down and to not put so much pressure on myself. With the stress that my father was putting on me and the amount of pressure I already had with not trying to make an error was already a hard enough challenge for me. Eventually once I got the hang of driving and the nerves went away and there wasn't so much pressure on me
The most significant challenge I faced occurred when I was in middle school. When I was nine years old my parents started to fight in front of my sisters and I. At first I was clueless to what was going on, but soon enough I understood that my father was an alcoholic. It got to the point where they couldn't be in the same room. I always saw how my father physically harmed my mom as they argued. He would get so violent with my sisters and I whenever he got mad. Witnessing the domestic violence inside my house affected me emotionally and academically. I was so far behind at school because my mind and focus was all on the problems going on at home. My mother finally decided enough was enough. She kicked out my father in hopes that it would better our lives.
School had never been difficult for me, I had not realized it at the time, but I was never challenged educationally prior to reaching high school. I entered freshman year confident and self-assured but closed the year miserably, receiving the worst grades yet in my short decade of schooling.
What was the biggest challenge you faced while obtaining your high school diploma or GED? How did you overcome this challenge?
My biggest challenge was adapting to my new school. The move was hard because I was entering into a new environment. I moved from Cornerstone Nevada Primary, a predominately African American school ,to University Liggett School, a predominately white school. I found it hard to adapt because I came from a
The first time I ever experienced an academic challenge was in the 8th grade. I was told by my teacher that I would not do well at an early college high school; a school that offers students a chance to earn an associate’s degree while attending high school. My teacher believed my average grades meant I would not excel at school. She went as far as asking my mother if she was forcing me to attend my high school. My mother told her that attending Mission Early College High School (MECHS) was my idea. Later on in the year, I applied to the National Junior Honor Society and was rejected because my grade point average (GPA) was below the requirements. While other students with lower GPA’s and parents with money or time to give to the school were accepted. This experience was the first time I realized since my parents did not have the money or the time to donate to the school, I was in an automatic disadvantage in comparison to my peers. Despite these setbacks, I applied to MECHS and was accepted into the program.
