Well, first, gun control is entirely based off the notion that people are committing gun related crimes because they have access to them and these debates are whether or not the nation should ban guns entirely. In 1981 President Reagan rejected a call for additional gun legislation, saying “there are today 20,000 gun control laws in effect being federal,state,and local in the U.S.”. So what we should be asking for instead of stricter laws on gun control is the laws that are already in place be enforced more diligently. Thus insuring less criminals and mentally ill are able to obtain firearms and commit heinous crimes. Following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, lawmakers have begun reconsidering the gun laws that are currently in place. Many states have previously implemented “red flag laws” (Johnson 2). However, after the recent events, lawmakers are debating on whether or not those laws are enough. Of course, to most people, stronger gun control laws seems like an obvious decision, but it is not that easy. Gun control laws are complicated. It is a “balancing act in the United States between public safety and the right to bear arms” (Mueller 2). Lawmakers must carefully balance the safety and constitutional rights of citizens. This is difficult to do when everyone has different values and points of view.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to have life and then in a blink of an eye it's gone? I have. I always wonder am I just going to die and see black or is there really life after death? The Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns. Gun control laws are just as old or older than the Second Amendment (ratified in 1791). Gun control is an argument much debated in the United States of America today. Recent events such as the shooting in Connecticut elementary school and the shooting in a Colorado theater at an early morning screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" have persuaded many government officials to support gun control laws. However, many government officials still hold to the 2nd Amendment, which bluntly states, "... the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." This being part of the Constitution, it bears a lot of credibility. However, I don't believe this is right. The government should not control guns rights to extremes, but it shouldn't let us have too much freedom.

There have been protests for stricter gun control laws such as banning assault weapons and stronger background checks. Especially after all the mass shootings that have occurred in the past years. Many of those incidents could have been prevented if gun laws had been stricter. More restrictive gun control laws target gun violence and crimes. House Republican Leader, Jim Durkin states that ,”the law is aimed at reducing crime in Chicago” (Smith). He also mentioned that 425 people have been murdered with guns so far in Chicago in 2016. The shocking part is that nearly 60% of those guns used to commit those crimes were purchased out of the city. Gun production is increasing drastically over the years (Horsley). Having this in mind, should there be a gun control law? People have different thoughts about it. Some may say that the guns are not the problem because they are not the ones who kill, but the person’s decision to shoot. Others believe that they are beneficially as for protection. A study by Harvard showed several European countries with high gun ownership, like Norway, Finland, Germany and France had 9 times lower murder rates than in Luxembourg where handguns are totally banned and ownership of any kind of gun is minimal. In the United States alone, thirty-nine percent of the citizens have at least one gun stored in their household, under the rights of the Constitution. Not long ago, there was a mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada that caused a state of worry around the nation and made many people to second guess the laws we have currently. Gun violence has been getting out of hand and an outrageous number of people want to change the gun control laws but changing laws about guns won’t stop people from using them and more illegal activity will be going around in our country.

This essay will be based on the opinions of people supporting the idea that gun laws should be banned. Understanding the idea of, if guns weren't allowed to be purchased then no one from the shootings would have been harmed. If guns were just removed then the problems today would be resolved. Making and passing strict gun-control laws will not make our nation safer nor more protected by no means. Did you know there was a study published in the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy proving that nations that have more guns tend to have less crime? Gun controls laws are too cruel. People should be aloud to obtain guns. Gun-related crime has been depleting in recent years, gun control laws discourage the right to self defense and even the second amendment proves this.

On October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire on a large crowd of concertgoers on the Las Vegas Strip, killing 58 people and more than 500, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. Following yet another mass shooting we find ourselves as society asking the same questions of gun control and whether we are doing too little to prevent these now eerily common instances. Although many will agree with Nevada Sheriff Joe Lombardo, “I don’t know how it [the mass shooting] could have been prevented.” others preach that more rigorous gun laws could have lessened the death toll or maybe even prevented this tragedy. I believe that more demanding gun control laws especially relating to assault rifles and gun ownership procedures would help decrease if not prevent many of these mass shootings.

Will making gun laws harsher reduce the rate of gun violence in America? I have not heard of many “self-defense” cases involving guns throughout my lifetime. I believe that guns have no place in society and that gun laws should be harsher to take them out of the hands of many individuals. I believe that guns should be harder to access, own, and keep. Ways the government should change gun laws should be to make background checks more reliable and in depth, making requirements for owning a gun stricter, changing current gun laws to adapt to new social changes, and improving mental health services.
