The Pros And Cons Of Gun Shootings

In the current year, many things have changed in the political world with some of them being welcomed by all and others not as much. While this paper is not specifically about the people holding political offices, I feel as though it is important to view their influence in these issues. The policy that I am going to discuss in this paper is gun control as I feel it is a hotly debated issue in the country today, especially after the incidents we have had throughout the recent years.

This opinion piece from The Washington Post was written by U.S. Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut. Published days after the recent Las Vegas Shooting, Murphy tells of his past experiences with gun violence urging for stronger gun control legislation. He states that the “phenomenon of horrific mass shootings is exclusive to the United States”, so the solution should be able to be solved by Americans. He argues that our response to “regular mass shootings” has been un-American, and how can a country that has solved the greatest problems in the world, not solve a problem that puts our fellow citizens in harm. “…we choose to be an increasingly distant outlier of exceptional violence”, Murphy states.

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Courts have universally agreed, however, that the right provided by the Second Amendment is not absolute and that many kinds of gun legislation designed to protect public safety remain valid ("Gun Safety & Public Health," 2013). In my government and economics class, we were assigned the task to decide whether we were pro-gun control or not. I was unclear of what side I wanted to choose and didn't want to choose the side that had less supporting details. As I did my research, it led me to choose pro-gun. I began researching what other people had to say about this huge controversial topic. I agree with those that believed obtaining guns is a way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. I started off my essay implying that I was pro-gun and having possession of a gun is necessary. Also, stricter gun control laws are not necessary because the laws do not deter crime. I developed various types of questions such as "What kinds of guns should be banned? How easy is it to obtain a gun? Are more gun control laws necessary? Do mass shootings differ from other types of gun violence?".

Would background checks prevent further tragic mass shootings from reoccurring? There have been 18 mass shootings since 2011 that have claimed the lives of over 100 innocent individuals. Illegal smuggling and purchases of ammunition by the thousands occur frequently throughout the United States and endanger the lives of many people by acts of terrorism that strike fear and terror into the hearts of citizens. The possession of large-capacity magazines should be outlawed along with the required background checks to any purchases made legally in authorized gun stores because gangs and criminals illegally smuggle these narcotics to cause harm and damage, school shootings happen once a week on average, and terrorist attacks endanger the lives

This was the headline in “The New York Times” by Christopher Mele and Manny Fernandez on November 5th 2017. The authors highlights the events that led to a gunman by the Devin Patrick Kelly, 26, opening fire at a congregation worshiping on a Sunday at a rural church in Texas, killing 26 people and scores injured. According to this article, the motif of the attack was attributed to a serious mental health problem and a failed marriage which led to divorce the victim having assaulted his wife and child.

As opponents against gun control have numerous reasons as to why guns should not be restricted amongst the American public but pointed to the Second Amendment to the United Constitution as the main reason why gun control should not be permitted in the U.S. However, what these critics do not want to accept is that since 1980, several crucial events in the United States have led to excessive gun control movement. Remarkably, it takes a lot more than one appalling catastrophe to influence Americans that more attention should be taken into monitoring the number and types of guns the public can get access to. However, some major shooting calamities in the U.S such as assassination attempts on President Reagan’s, Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook have all triggered majority of Americans to take a stance in favor of gun control legislation. In the streets of Atlanta where most shootings happen a young gentleman was walking and had a conversation with this young man they told him that his job is not paying him enough and should come and sell drug to get more money the young man told them to give him time to think about it. Gun violence is a major flaw in our schools and in communities at large. There were 28 people that died in the Sandy Hooks school shooting on December 14, 2012. At the columbine high school shooting on April 20,1999, there were 15 people that were killed. At the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14,2018, there were 17 students and teachers that had been shot and killed. Since Columbine, there has been 122 deaths from school shootings.

In recent years, gun control has been one of the most debated topics in the United States. No matter who you ask, everyone always has an opinion on firearm ownership. After every publicized mass shooting, two groups of people form: group #1 wants to ban guns from private ownership in some shape or form, and group #2 fights against them fiercely to protect the constitutional right to bear arms. According to the second amendment two groups are mentioned The mithila and The people it's possible that the militia is a branch of the group The people ,this means that there is people in the group the mittha and vice versa so it's possible for the larger group to keep and bear arms. Having tighter restrictions on gun control limits us from maintaining self defence and deprives us from our right the 2nd amendment.

Gun control is one of the most divisive issues in politics. Recently, more mass shootings are correlated with an increase in antagonism on both sides of the debate. Proponents of stricter control fear for their safety while opponents fear for the loss of safety with the possibility of less guns. However ideal it may be to pass legislation that completely ban the ownership of firearms in this country, it is unreasonable to attempt to do that. The best method of placing restrictions on gun ownership without completely banning it is to increase the efficiency of universal background checks on all transactions, both from federally licensed and private dealers.

Although I did not agree with the article How Gun Control Advocates Could break the NRA’s Blockade by Ronald Brownstein, it states some points that were hard to refute about gun control and that helped shape my argument. My stance on gun control is that we should not ban guns as a whole, but have more of a centralized approach on how people can obtain a gun. Being an American citizen allows you with certain alienable rights that are outlined by the Bill of Rights. We as a nation were given these rights at the creation of our great nation based on the fact that all men were created equal. Some of the rights that are given include things such as, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and the right to bear arms. The Bill of Rights was made because they wanted to place specific limits on government power. The author of the article is suggesting that we as a nation should ban all types of guns. This topic of banning guns or not banning guns is important because in recent events there has been a lot of mass shootings that have ended lives too early. These mass shootings are becoming more and more common the number of people that have been killed by guns within the last year has been four hundred and sixty-one. Also, there have been over three hundred mass shootings in the last 477 days.

No matter what progressives say, the data clearly show having stricter gun laws doesn't prevent violent crime. If it did, then states with lax gun laws should have high violent crime rates compared to states with stricter gun laws. However, that is not the case guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Therefore gun restrictions will never work because you cannot control the people. Subsequently, these gun restrictions would only apply to the legal carriers of firearms and not the illegal carriers. Even though many members of society feel gun control has a positive effect on the nation, however it has negative effects due to limitations of the Second Amendment, rights to self protection, and it does not deter crime on a national
