Music is all around us; it is a universal language in which unites people from different cultures. From a basis level, Music has emerged from individual reasons and influences, allowing it to divide into smaller sub entities which end up being contributors to all cultures creating a globalized community. Further more, different sub genres of music such as Dance, Jazz, Classical, and Alternative have derived from an origin and were created because of varied factors and to this day influence specific groups. On an international latino level, this specific community has become highly recognized in today’s world. The governments of these countries often criticize reggaeton because they feel its lyrics are too violent, vulgar, sexual and derogatory towards women. However, Reggaeton was banned in Puerto Rico until in the end of the 1990s where new Reggaeton artists came along who began to “clean up” the lyrics to ensure that their music would be played on the radio. Eventually, the ban was lifted and became available to the public through regular music stores. On April 16, 1971 the famous singer Selena Quintanilla was born and her music became popular and is to this day. When she was growing up she had a talent of singing and dancing and by the age of around 10 she became the lead singer in her family’s band called the Selena Y Los Dinos. From there on out she became a popular singer in the Tejano music. She was known as the “Queen of Tejano”. This affected many people, her music was so great that people liked to dance along with her music. There was people who grew up listening to Selena, an example is me, I grew up listening to her music and loved it. I would listen to her music when I got the chance and just close my eyes and be mesmerized by her music. There are people out there today that when they listen to her music they are affected by her singing and just let go and dance to the rhythm.
The genre bachata was developed in the Caribbean island of Dominican Republic. This genre was created based on boleros (slow-tempo Latin music), son cubanos, waltzes, Mexican music and merengue. Bachata is well known as love and depressing songs in which many people describe them self with this genre. At one point back in the earlier 1960s, bachata was considered vulgar and low-class. “Acceptance of the music has increased significantly in the last two decades, although some dominicans, both individuals living on the island and stateside, still do not accept the music because of the implication of its lower-class origins and associations with such themes as crime, poverty, drinking, and prostitution’’(Stavans 47). The genre Bachata has spread and grown so quickly for the past few years that is has become very famous in the United States, Europe, China, and South America. The genre bachata is well known to attract people with its lyrics, instruments, and dance since it identifies many people with real life events.
Latino students are able to stay connected to the stories that their parents know and their grandparents know. In addition, music is significant because it helps to have the feeling of home and aware of one’s feelings and thoughts. In this essay I will be describing and going into detail about salsa, plena, bomba, and merengue music. What really is the style of music along with the importance it has in and for the island it belongs to. There are multitudinous types of Chicano music that include all types of instruments, verses, backgrounds, and purposes. According to Tatum (2001), “The popular Hispanic folk music has deep roots in Spain and Mexico, but it is a living cultural form that is forever changing and adapting to new social conditions and musical currents (Robb 1980, 5)” (p.15). In my personal experience, Mexican music has revolved around my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a bordertown has its Hispanic heritage. Whether I was at home, school, or even in public places, I would hear Spanish related music playing in the background. I believe Spanish music holds many values when it comes to different occasions. The music can manipulate the minds of its listeners using love, passion, and outstanding rhythms. After reading an article online, I can explain how three different genres of traditional Mexican music influence people’s culture.
Hispanic’s music had a great impact in USA. Nowadays, Americans listen to Hispanics’ music. Hispanics’ music now is part of American’s culture. These changes in USA began around of 19th century, when Hispanics immigration increases in the USA. One of the big changes in music occurred around 1940s, when Americans began to recognize the efforts of Cuban-American musicians. One of the Cuban bands was Cugat. It was known better Orchestra ‘based in New York’s Waldorf Astoria’ which had a great visual and musical style. Another Cuban band was Machito who were dominated as one of the best New York’s scenes at that time. Thanks, to those bans Americans adopted some of Cubans’ dances and performances such as rumba, mambo and cumbia. Americans used and still using the Cuban instruments like bongos and maracas to create their rhythms. Later on, Americans created Jazz by African Americans with the influenced of Cuban’s music.
Each type or sub-genre of music has a quite distinct sound and can be related to the racial groups of these areas and to the history of Chile.
Latin Dance has evolved into a vivid kaleidoscope of many different cultures dancing to the beat of a single drum. These types of music which find their origin in African influence have developed into a meshwork of individual sounds and have grown to be identified with a particular culture. An example of such can be seen in the evolution and history of one of these, Merengue. This type of dance is native to the Carribean, however, it has developed and taken its precedence in the Dominican Republic. This Carribean nation has been crucial to the spread of this music on an international level.
How did Cuba and Brazil affect popular music, culture and dance in the 1940’s and 50’s? In this investigation I am going to establish what affects Cuba and Brazil had on popular music and dance. The first thing I’m going to do is discover how the music from Cuba and Brazil spread to America, the center of music. On Sunday October 2nd at 7:00pm in Weill Hall, I watched Omara Portuondo with special guests Roberto Fonseca, Anat Cohen, and Regina Carter. Omara Portuondo was the only female in the Buena Vista Social Club. The Buena Vista Social Club consisted of the most famous Cuban musicians at that time. The Club hosted dances and musical events. Omara’s special guest Roberto Fonsea is known for being a multi-instrumentalist. While Anat Cohen is known for unique playing of the clarinet because she fuses Latin jazz styles together. Regina Carter is known for being a talented jazz violinist. All the music that was song that night was in Spanish.
According to him, growing up around both musical genres influenced him to develop a passion for the music. At the same time, it had a big influence on the music he likes and interprets.
