According to Peggy Baker, of the Pilgrim Hall Museum, the fur trade between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans began sometime around 1625. The Pilgrims were in enormous debt with investors in Europe and needed money to repay this debt. They knew that one of the best ways to make the money was through fur trade and they knew the best furs to trade were beaver furs. However, the beavers were in Maine with the American Indians. Hence, the Pilgrims began the fur trade with the Native Americans. With different cultures and beliefs, it is very hard for groups of people to avoid conflict with one another. One of the biggest factors of the clash between Native Americans and Europeans is that they are coming from completely different lifestyles. Europeans had very poor diet, which consisted of mostly bread and soup. Those who did not starve were malnourished. Europe was filled with many diseases that killed much of Europe’s population. Native American survival was based on hunting and gathering. If they killed an animal they ate, if they failed to do so they went hungry. Native Americans lived under a democratic system and were separated into tribes and lived in tents. According to Bible Scripture, Native Americans welcomed people to the shores. Pilgrims arrived in the MayFlower in 1620. Native Americans had different beliefs than the Europeans did. Indian tribes lacked unity expectation of the five Nation Iroquois. Most of the european nations at the time were often rivals with one another. European settlers drove the Indians from their lands as they moved westward. The Spanish came to the New World with the idea that they were going to practically enslave, convert, or kill the natives. Because of this the Spanish’s treatment for the natives was terrible and very early on. They would use natives to help them find gold and do other manual labor activities. The missionaries would attempt to convert them to Christianity and because a lot would not comply they would end up killing them. Early on the British settlers’ relationship with the native Americans is very different. At first, they were friendly. The first British settlers in a way to live on the Native Americans. North America them was very different from Great Britain, and the Native Americans had lived there for very long time. So, the British settlers took advantage of that and began to trade with the Native Americans and use them in order to help their new settlement survive. Although the Spanish and British relationship with the natives differed at first eventually they both ended up doing the same exact thing. They both killed the Native Americans and cause their societies to be displaced. Even though there and goals were different they both used the exploitation of Native Americans in order to achieve these goals.

One day, a lone Indian man walked into the settlement. He raised his hand in friendship to the settlers. The Pilgrims welcomed this stranger named Samoset. Samoset introduced the Pilgrims to his chief, Massasoit, and his interpreter, Squanto. Squanto spoke English because he had been captured as a boy by traders who had come to the New World in search of slaves. Squanto was taken to England and lived there many years before returning to the New World. He alone understood that the Pilgrims did not know how to hunt or fish - that they would die without help in the New World.

The relationship between the English and the Native Americans in 1600 to 1700 is one of the most fluctuating and the most profound relationships in American history. On the one side of the picture, the harmony between Wampanoag and Puritans even inspires them to celebrate “first Thanksgiving”; while, by contrast, the conflicts between the Pequots and the English urge them to antagonize each other, and even wage a war. In addition, the mystery of why the European settlers, including English, become the dominant power in American world, instead of the indigenous people, or Indians, can be solved from the examination of the relationship. In a variety of ways, the relationship drastically alters how people think about and relate to the aborigines. Politically, the relationship changes to establish the supremacy of the English; the English intends to obtain the land and rules over it. Socially, the relationship changes to present the majority of the English settlers; the dominating population is mostly the English settlers. Economically, the relationship changes to obtain the benefit of the English settlers; they gain profit from the massive resource in America. Therefore, the relationship does, in fact, change to foreshadow the discordance of the two groups of people.

By the early 1600s both the French and the English had established colonies in North America; the French had New France in Canada and the English had colonies in New England and the Chesapeake Region. These colonies were very different but they shared a few similarities. One aspect they had in common, was that the territories they claimed had already been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. The European settlers’ relationship with the American Indian’s was in constant turmoil, and between the arrival of the colonists to 1760 there were many instances of cooperation, conflict and compromise between the two groups.

Beginning in the Sixteenth Century, Europeans sought to escape religious and class persecution by engaging on a journey to the New World. However, they were unaware that this “New World” was already inhabited by many groups of Native Americans, who had been established on the continent for thousands of years. At first, the two ethnic groups lived in relative peace. The colonists of Jamestown survived due to Powhatan’s tribe teaching them how to cultivate the land. However, things took a twisted turn as the colonists grew greedy. Due to cultural differences, there was stark tension between the Indian groups and European settlers in New England prior to 1750, which tremendously influenced early political means, social life, and the economy.

The arrival of the ‘foreigners’, as referred to by the Native Americans, turned a new stone in Native American diplomacy. No longer did they have to only deal with neighboring tribes, as they were forced to endeavor into politics with strangers who were looking to take their land. The first relationship between the pilgrims and the Native Americans began with the Wampanoag tribe. The relations between the two groups paved the view that the pilgrims had towards the Indians. The decently friendly relationship that stood between the two groups was short lived as the pilgrims felt that the indians were getting in the way of their expansion; and shortly after the friendship ceased to exist (Bell, 37).

The colonists couldn’t get all the necessities for life, so they had to ask their only neighbors for help, the natives. Francis West and his men sailed up the Chesapeake Bay to trade corn with the natives. In the novel “The Virginia Adventure,” Ivor Noel Hume wrote about how the colonists received the grain in exchange for corn. He writes, “Though West was able to load his (small ship) with grain, the success involved ‘some harshe and Crewell dealinge by cutting off towe (two) of the Salvages heads and other extremetyes.” In order to get food, they cut off two natives heads. This sparked anger in the natives and it caused a dispute between the colonists and natives. The natives were angry with the colonists for killing their men, so they started to kill the colonists in return. Another reason the natives played a role in the death rate of the colonists was because the colonists planted themselves right in the middle of all the Powhatan tribes. The Jamestown settlement was surrounded by Powhatan settlements, meaning that Jamestown would be surrounded and have nowhere to go during native attacks. The last reason the natives contributed to the decline of the colonists was because the natives started to threaten the colonists. It’s true if you say that the friendship between the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims was true. Although the friendship was true, it did not last long. As time went by, more and more English men came to North America and didn’t need any help from the Natives as much as the original Pilgrims did. Many of the people who were considered new comers forgot all about the bond and help that they had and got from the Indians. Trust started to be broken and the friendship started to die out. The pilgrims started to tell the Indians that their customs and religion was wrong. After a few years the friendship between the two died out and the children who sat together in the “first thanksgiving” were now fighting one another in the battle later known as, “King Phillip’s War”.

North America was a region in the world that was new to many especially the settlers who’d later live there. For thousands of years this region was unknown until men from other countries began traveling from sea to see this part of the world they never knew about. These people who came to what is now known as the United States of America sought to establish a new life. Before the English, Spanish and French colonies stepped foot on North America there were already Indian tribes who inhabited the land. Soon after reaching this land colonist began to settle in and began working and living. Each colony struck an alliance with the native tribes who lived near them. In 1620, the first batch of European settlers come to New England area. They are hoping to live peacefully with Indians since the settlers demand to receive food and supplies from the Indians. Meanwhile, the new immigrants clearly understand that they are weak and inferior. Once if they have conflicts with Indians, they have no chance to win the battle. Another major reason that French and Britain need to ally with Native Americans in the early 17th century is because the idea of mercantilism. Since they believe that the wealth of nation should mainly from trading, both nations want to have more profit from fur trading. European settlers and Indians also exchange crops, tools, and know-how. Likewise, Indians want the new immigrants to be their allies to defeat enemies in the future days. However, the problems egress inevitably. Because of the largely different beliefs on lands owning and religion, even more migration of population, and external diseases, European settlers and Indians break their peace and enter wars soon after.

It was quite surprising to know that the Pilgrims were not actually looking for religious freedom when they came here. They already found it in Netherlands. They were looking for gold. That’s the first thing that they did when they arrived here. They searched everywhere including grave. They were greedy, cruel, and unhygienic. They rarely bathe, thinking it unhealthy and used to smell bad. Squanto tried to teach them to bathe but failed to do so. Pilgrims carried a lot of diseases with them and brought those diseases here. Indians never encountered white people before, and they were not immune to the diseases that these white people carried. As a result, many Indians died because of these diseases. Smallpox was one of the main cause of death.
