The Protestant Reformation was in the early sixteenth century and was started when 95 theses were nailed to the door of the Roman Catholic Church. Martin Luther was the man behind the 95 statements professing all that is wrong with the church and its members. Each thesis pointed out a part of the corruption that the Catholics had been taking part in. After being persecuted and thrown into jail, Luther started translating the Bible from Latin into German. The church disapproved because they wanted to keep the Bible only accessible to high ranking persons of the church. All of this led to the reformation which set a foothold for advancements in freedom in religion and culture.

The Protestant Reformation, followed by the Catholic Reformation, was an attempt to cleanse the Catholic Church of all corruption and blind teaching. As presented in the documents provided, the Protestant and Catholic Reformations represented great change in the life of Europeans. Whether positively or negatively, almost every European citizen felt the impact of the Reformations on their lives. This was due largely to the fact that the Catholic Church struggled to defend ideas, affecting the clergy, peasants, and nobles all in different ways.

The Reformation in western and central Europe officially began in 1517 with Martin Luther and his 95 Theses. This was a debate over the Christian religion. The Protestant Reformation was a pivotal time of European history that occurred during the 16th century. The Protestant Reformation was comprised of people called “reformers” that challenged papal authority and questioned the Catholic Church’s ability to define Christian practice (“The Reformation”). The Protestant Reformation was revolutionary due to the fact that the reformers preached against everything the Catholic Church had been teaching. Some famous reformers are John Calvin and Martin Luther. However, Martin Luther-- to some--- is named the most successful and influential reformer of the 16th century. Martin Luther was tremendously effective and influential due to how resourceful he was, and his teachings spread across Europe swiftly.

To begin, the Protestant Reformation began in reaction to the Catholic Church’s rather corrupt practices. Prior to the Reformation, the only major Christian denomination in Western Europe at the time was Catholicism, headed by the Pope in Rome. Through many acts of violence such as the formation of the Spanish Inquisition and the slaughter of the Cathars, amongst others, Europe’s Monarchs had wiped out and suppressed any form of religious competition. The Protestant Reformation period took place from the 1500s to the 1600s. This reformation was a change in the Roman Catholic Church. It happened due to some priests' and believers' opinions that contradicted a few of the Catholic Church's ideals and practices. It separated the former Catholic religion into branches; including Lutheranism, Anglicanism, Calvinism, and Anabaptism, each branch having different, although very similar, beliefs. Lutheranism, for example, is very different from Calvinism. These newly created branches changed Church unity forever and they have survived and grown for centuries.

The Protest Reformation is one of the most revolutionary events that have occurred. This was the Reformation that gave people a decision to be Catholic or Protestant. There was never a standard or clear alternative. Through the 16th and 17 centuries your decision may cost you your life.

Protestant Reformation: (Also known as the Reformation) is when Martin Luther rebelled against the church by writing a book called “The Ninety-Five Theses.” Luther began to question and criticise the selling of indulgences, he insisted that the pope had no authority over purgatory and the Catholic doctrine of the Merits of the saints. What was the Protestant Reformation? Put into its simplest form, it was the evolution of the Roman Catholic Church; changing the religious beliefs and practices forever. Many people throughout history contributed to this famous movement, but not all of these people get the recognition they deserve, for example, Anne Boleyn. She was the queen of England from 1533 to 1536, becoming queen by marrying King Henry VIII. She brought new reformist ideas to the table, saved those being persecuted, and, with her dying words, provided an example of the one thing Christians everywhere should live by: love. Although her modern and unique views might have been looked down upon during the time of her reign, Christians today can view her as role model and a martyr.

The protestant reformation happened at the moment that it did because the Catholic Church was very a powerful force in Europe. It controlled people lives both spiritually and temporally. The church had so much power that it maintained political control over a large portion of Italy. The fact that the church held so much control over countries and governments became a point of contention among European countries such as the Holy Roman Empire, Italian city-states outside of Rome, England, France and Spain. The power of the rulers of these areas had greatly increased in the 14th century and they were eager to take the chances offered by a Reformation to weaken the grip of the Catholic Church in Europe and also to develop their own powers across the European continent. For quite some time the Catholic Church had been an institution rampant with internal struggles. Such as the Avignon Papacy from 1309 to 1377 when seven popes opted to live in Avignon, France and not reside in Rome which was and is the traditional home of the Papacy. The Pope and other high ranking church officials often lived opulent lifestyles rather than a more austere lifestyle that should befit a spiritual leader. Many church leaders and Popes maintained political powers. They led armies, waged wars and made many political decisions. Church offices were sold, and many Popes and bishops practiced nepotism to fill church offices. With all of these worldly issues for the Pope

During the elizabethan era most were considered Catholics, however in the early 1500s the practice of roman Catholics was questioned during the reformation according to Linda Alchin. The beliefs of German, Martin Luther caused Protestantism. Martin Luther's supporters protested against the rules and regulations, which resulted in the laws that put a limit on the new ideas Martin was trying to spread (Alchin 2). The protesters decided to create there own religion and beliefs, now known as the Protestants.

The Protestant Reformation was a time period that changed Christianity. During this era, the Pope was considered the ultimate authority and not the king. Life revolved around the church. After the movement, kings became the ultimate source of power once again. Without this change, the Catholic Church might still be in control today.

The first picture shows a church that is full of paintings and sculptures, this is a photo of the Catholic Church. In the Catholic Church they worshiped relics and used many statues and other pieces of art. Along with the use of relics, the Catholic Church used the bible to teach and preach about God, whereas the protestant Church did not. The second picture is of a church that is mostly empty, this shows the protestant church, because they did not use relics and they focused on their relations with god.

The intent of this paper is to evaluate the distinct character and quality of the expressions of the Protestant Reformation. This paper will discuss Lutheran Reformation, The Anabaptist, and The English Puritans as well as the Catholic Reformation also known as the Counter Reformation. It is the hope that after the reader has had the opportunity to view each of the characteristics and the expressions of each of the reformation the reader will have a better understanding of each and will be able to articulate the differences of each.
