The Rationale Mental disorders are extremely taboo, mostly when you talk about its occurrence among youth. Many people avoid the subject because they are scared or because they just don’t believe they are real illnesses. When you add a possible relation with technology use, you lose your audience. Not only ill people don’t believe the correlation between the extreme use of technology and their sickness, they deny it because they are addicted to it. I have decided to write a speech, because I wanted to talk directly to my audience, teenagers, with a tone and vocabulary that allows me to be less formal. I believe the subject I chose is quite sensitive, so I wish to express myself in words that a large amount of people can understand, like that my message can be universal. Also, I consider the language I will use adequate for communicating my beliefs and my strong feelings about the subject, since it will be written from my point of view. The speech is for everyone, but especially for teenagers. I want to tell them that they are not alone and that a lot of people are aware of their situation and that we are fighting for them. I will be adding some interesting statistics I found on the internet, supporting the ideas I’m advancing. The relation between the tasks I’ve chosen to write about and the content we’ve seen in class is the propaganda techniques media uses to altercate our feelings and our thinking. I will not talk directly about it, but it will be often implied in
Today’s media (news) plays an enormous role in the lives of people in directing a specific perception of the world around them. Most often media conduct's a subconscious effect upon its spectators in which the upshots are deliberately or illdeliberatly towards a particular topic.
3. Present your persuasive speech’s anticipated topic, general purpose statement, specific purpose statement, and thesis statement. - Topic: Equality of men and women- Equals or in a league of their own? - General Purpose Statement: is to persuade the differences and similarities of what society deems as male and female roles. - Thesis Statement: Equality between men and women are under careful consideration between equal pay and gender roles, however, equality is based on perception instead of perspective.
Throughout the centuries mental illness has been treated by countless treatments. Modern treatments have created an argument over which treatment options are best. the most debates treatments today are medication and therapy. the argument of medication versus therapy as treatments for mental illness is fairly new. Yet, proponents of both sides have strong arguments stating the advantages of their treatment option. proponents of medication believe pharmacogenetics, tailored treatments, and medication's ability to treat severe disorders makes medication the better treatment option. proponents of therapy believe drug addiction, suicide prevention, and need adaption establishes therapy as the better treatment choice.
Forget all the stereotypes of mental illness. It has no face. It has no particular victim. Mental illness can affect an individual from any background and the black community is no exception. African Americans sometimes experience even more severe forms of mental health conditions because of unmet needs and barriers to treatment. According to the Office of Minority Health, African Americans are 20 percent more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population. That’s why UGA third year Majenneh Sengbe is taking action as the co-founder of her upcoming organization Black Minds Daily.
The internet has become so pervasive that 64% of internet users consider it a necessity (McKenna and Bargh, 57). As 64% of the population doesn’t suffer from mental health issues, it is clearly not the internet itself that leads to mental illness. The fear of new technology continually pervades society, starting with fearing the telephone and electricity. As long as there are new technological outlets developed, there will always be fear an superstition of their potential harm (McKenna and Bargh, 58). McKenna and Bargh believe that newspapers and media itself have falsely represented evidence in order
For the next three speeches, I am going to be educating, as well as encouraging you all to be more attentive, active, and vocal, when it comes to political and social issues. We’ve all been told that WE are the future, well there is some truth to that—Our generation is responsible for the future development of our country and that is something we need to take more seriously. I began looking into this topic before this class ever started; I looked up things so I, myself, knew what was going on. So, through more extensive research, I have gained a better understanding, and that is what I am sharing with
Assignment: As the documentary Miss Representation explains, “The media is now the message and the messenger.” Every day, we take in countless hours of media that influence how we view others and in turn how we view ourselves. It is our responsibility to consume media in an intelligent way AND fight back against negative messages put forth by the media.
Technology throughout its existence has improved the overall quality of life for many people around the world. Its impact is evident in our generation, where many people rely on technology to gain information on current events, increase work efficiency and even helping us understand ourselves. “Advances in neuroscience, technology and research sophistication have greatly increased understanding of mental illnesses and improved the treatment of these disorders.” (Wahl, 2011). Despite our knowledge on various mental illnesses, many individuals stray away from professional assistance due to the stigma that is attached to the illness; many individuals do not opt for help because they do not want a label attached to them. Social media is a huge platform that influences many people and the slandering that many media platforms do when they discuss the topic of mental illness is slowly increasing and is an issue that must be discussed.
The first website I looked at is run by a licensed psychologist named Philip Hickey. His site claims to be “an alternative perspective on psychiatry 's so-called mental disorders.” He uses this site to criticize the APA and all psychiatric practices. This website doesn’t exactly present a pseudoscientific treatment or cure because Hickey believes that mental illnesses do not exist and therefore do not require treatment. I think that a licensed psychologist using his name and title to discredit everyone who works in the field of psychology and all of the people living with a mental illness is just as dangerous as a fake treatment for a disease.
'Imagine a health problem that affects one in six of us, that has a deep and damaging impact on our family and working lives, where effective treatments are available, and yet where only about a quarter of people with this condition get any treatment.'
Through the course of time, mental illnesses have always been in existence due to varying factors and causes. However, as time has passed, the perceptions and available treatments for mental illnesses have also changed as new technology was developed. By looking at the treatments and perceptions of mental illnesses in the early 20th century, we can learn how to properly treat and diagnose not only mental disorders but also other conditions as well as show us the importance of review boards and controlled clinical trials.
From schizophrenia to bipolar disorder to severe depression there is no question that these are serious mental illnesses that are debilitating and require constant medical care and according to the American Psychiatric Association(APA) hording and internet disorders are just a couple of new diagnosis that they have added to the manual of mental disorder or DSM. But is this addition of new mental disorders really beneficial for the patients or is this a way for doctors and pharmaceutical companies to cash in? , this paper proposes both drawbacks and benefits to the diagnosis of mental disorders as well as investigation of some specific examples of diagnosed disorders. However, the paper’s main direction is to focus on the drawbacks which
Furthermore, The tone of the article is persuasive with medical professional quoting, and statics depicted, to convince the audience, mainly parents that the use of internet is no longer normal but on the path of becoming a recognised diagnosis. IF the article succeeds in its aim, then parents with children with similar symptoms will treat the diagnosis with stimulants, antidepressants and psychiatric drugs despite the limited research and lack of comprehensive clinical practice guidelines (Rivers, 2009). Psychotropic medication seems to be prescribed as the first pioririty, furthermore it is more convenient for many families who live with low-socioeconomic lifestyles, because of the time and money advantage. Sessions, Overseas data and anecdotal
