As a result I wanted to test the reactions of men and women as I entered a gender specific restroom. I work at the Residential Dining Hall at Cal State Long Beach. In the back are the lockers and the gender specific restrooms for men and women. At the end of every shift there is normally a line for both restrooms because there is only one stall for each. I decided to wait in line for the men’s restroom. No one knew that I was waiting to go in until both restrooms were vacant and I proceeded into the men’s room. I can feel the stares of everyone as they assumed I was waiting for women’s restroom. When I first entered I heard someone yell “You are going into the wrong restroom!” and I simply replied “No I am not.” After taking a longer time than expected, when those who witnessed me exiting stared at me specifically for an explanation. When I ignored their stares, they questioned why I decided to go in there when the women’s restroom was emptied. Some assumed that I was looking for something, and one of my coworkers even proceeded to address me as sir. I did not believe this to be a big deal because both restrooms have the same exact setting. I asked one of my coworkers Marleena to observe the reactions. She explained that some coworkers stared at each other confused, and they needed assurance asking “Did Autumn just go into the men’s restroom” or they just stared and shrugged their shoulders. Well, not actually from two separate cultures, but the idea of men and women being opposites as pointed out in the opening. Most don’t explicitly look into the complexity of a transgender person’s life and all the questions or problems one might face: Do I use the men’s or the women’s bathroom? Is it appropriate to use this locker room? Those are only two of the many questions a transgender person might run into on a daily basis because of how others would see the situation, how the people who may have a sneaking suspicion that the woman they saw go into the ladies’ bathroom isn’t actually female by their definition, or how it could also seem strange to see that same person go into the mens’ bathroom. These all lead to dysphoria in any person’s situation in public places due to the fact that many choose to taunt or mock the person; however, with the help of Title IX these questions could start to vanish from the thoughts of many transgender students which Blad exemplifies with a quote in her article:
It is a known fact that both men and women use the restroom. What many are not aware of, is that using the toilet in public areas reinforces the differences between male and female. For instance, the very first thing any individual sees when entering a public restroom is the little dolls of a man or a woman as an indication of a female restrooms and or the male restrooms. Back in the Victorian era, they created restrooms for women with a special room that had a resting area before entering the section in which the restrooms were located. This was primary because back then it was not lady like to dispose bodily fluids. They believe that women should keep such matters private, and it was pretty much unheard of for women to even use the restrooms the way it is indented. Sociologists use sociological lens to think critically about everyday life, everyday assumptions while also challenging the natural aspects of life. The main issue in this article is that people with different body parts should go different restrooms. Steve Craig, in his article Men’s Men and Women’s Women especially define how different sexes in advertisement can influence a particular audience towards a product; one stereotypical method he describes is “Men’s Women” (Craig).One such ad using sex appeal, and a basic structure of “Men’s Women” to bring in customer was made by BMW in 2008 to sell their used cars. BMW, which is a world-renowned company known for its performance heavy automobiles, targets a male audience by comparing a gorgeous woman to their cars.This ad by BMW, who no doubt make amazing cars, degrade women through its message, and it enforces Steve Craig’s “Men’s women” tactic, but this ad also goes a step further and displays the ever-present patriarchy in advertisement overtly.
In this week reading, “Calling All Restroom Revolutionaries”, by Simone Chess, Alison Kafer, Jessi Quizar, and Mattie Udora Richardson they expressed three main points throughout the article. The first main point in this article is that “ bathrooms are easier to access for some of us than for others.” This is an issue that some people don’t know about or don’t even think is a problem. Recently this has been a hotbed topic, within the media but I have been aware of this problem for sometime now. Many of my close friends have expressed their concerns about the bathroom situation well before this became a newsworthy topic. In addition, this topic has always bothered me because it is a bathroom and people mostly use the bathroom for two purposes.
The U.S. federal government is backing the issue of gender neutral bathrooms. As Lisa Rein, publisher of an article in The Washington Post, writes, “The federal government is strongly urging employers to give transgender employees access to bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity, marking a new policy front in the fast-moving campaign for transgender equality” (Rein). Rein argues that bathrooms need to be made neutral, as it discriminates members of the LBGT community. Shields delineates the ways in which the Western modern project required in its logic of construction a need to create and reproduce an epistemological, discursive, and pseudo-scientific dichotomous relationship between the genders. Because we are arguing that males and females have different cultures we wanted to take a look at what some of these differences might be. According to our research the inherent differences between male and female culture are the different roles that society holds for them and the ways these roles lead to different communication styles.
