To conclude, Dally who was once shown to be the toughest guy in the gang is now looked at as the real hero of the novel as he proved to us his true character. All this while, Dally was never able to showcase his inners-self due to his violent background but as he starts facing different situations on the people he really cared about, he finally starts to change himself. The people in his life, like Johnny motivated him to change himself completely and finally depict the best of
Second of all, Dally is wild. Dally is an outgoing person he likes to be entertaining. “ He was wild as the boys in the downtown outfits…” ( page 10).
In this book, everyone was part of a gang and everyone looked at each other as either a Soc ,or a Greaser. Johnny, who has been abusively beaten while getting jumped and from his own father at home, and Pony save children from a burning house. No one would expect the hoodlums to risk their lives to save children. They have a reputation for doing illegal things and getting arrested. However, newspapers have stories on the two and labelled them as “heroes”. Dally, who was the toughest and baddest of all the Greasers, kills himself. The true reason behind this was because after going to the hospital to visit Johnny, he witnessed watching him die right in front of his eyes. Johnny’s death makes him rob a store and having the police intentionally kill him. The only thing that he loved was Johnny and his beloved thing was gone. This shows that Dally, even though he’s a Greaser and does all these horrible things, has feelings. Even people who genuinely knew him, labelled him as having no feelings. Also, Randy, who is a soc, talks to Pony about Bob and how he was just a regular guy who had his own problems. The only reason that Bob would act out and drink a lot was because his parents would never set boundaries. He just wanted for someone to tell him “No”. Cherry Valance, who was Bob’s girlfriend, even said that he was actually sweet. This shows that people are individuals and that labels don’t say who you
Shown from the start of the novel, Dally was described as the ‘real character’ of the gang. He was tougher, colder and meaner than the rest. Although during the incident of the burning church, Darry’s character changed and showed that he had feeling as well. This was proved when Dally, jumps inside the burning church to save the children as well as Ponyboy and Johnny. When that news came out on the newspaper, it had so many people shock as well as the Social and if they hadn’t seen it for their own eyes, “[they]would have never believed a Greaser could pull something like that.” Through this, it was proven that Dally had realised how much little things matted in life and that despite being a hero, it was also important to make sure others were okay. Hinton has proved how Dally has changed in his beliefs as well as his
In one instance Dally explained to Johnny that his father didn’t care about him at all and he didn’t care one bit. On page 88 it says “No,” snapped Dally, “they didn’t. Blast it, Johnny, what do they matter? Shoot, my old man don’t give a hang whether I’m in jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in the gutter. That don’t bother me none.” It is apparent that Dally doesn’t care what his family thinks about him which shows the hard side of Dally. In another event Dally could not handle Johnny’s death so he robbed a grocery store and then shot himself. On page 149 it says”Damnit, Johnny…” he begged, slamming one fist against the wall hammering it to make It obey his will. “Oh damnit, Johnny, don’t die, please don’t die…” He suddenly bolted through the door and down the hall. Therefore Dally could not handle Johnny’s death because Johnny was the only person Dally loved. So it is clear that Dally is a hard person and he does not give in easily but Johnny’s death took him hard and he could not handle the pain so he killed himself because he has nothing left to live
Dally lost his innocence at a young age. The book explains, “Dally had spent three years on the wild side of New York and had been arrested at the age of ten”.(10) He had to fend for himself and that made him grow up quickly. Another example from the book is, “It would be a miracle if Dally loved anything. The fight for self-preservation had hardened him beyond caring.”(59) If something like this happens to a young child it will definitely impact them. Dally also smokes and drinks.
This causes Dally to become reckless and finally ending in him being killed by the police, Ponyboy tells the reader “Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted.” (p.187). From this the reader can gather how the events had modified Dally, creating a more emotional and caring character, weakening his value for himself and in return, strengthening his value for others.
Through the eyes of Dally, it is evident that being tough was the only way to survive in a world plagued by the separation of social classes. Dally carefully constructs a reputation of being hard and emotionally distant as a survival mechanism, and a way to secure his identity as a greaser. In one of Dally’s more
Throughout the study of JB Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’, it is easy to identify that there are many points in which this text both conforms and subverts to the conventions of the mystery genre. The author explores the archetypal mystery genre through firstly, the dead body and murder of Eva Smith, as well as the clues and motives that are revealed throughout the investigation. This is further followed by the series of intertwining characters, and the inquiry of their involvement in the death. However, this typical mystery text can be contradicted by the fact that this death was not a murder, but a suicide case, changing the expectations to instead of who killed her, but what were the lead up in events to result in Eva killing herself.
“ When you’re in a gang, you stick up for them for the members.”(Hinton 26) Ponyboy’s first act of loyalty was sticking up for Dally to the Soc girls when they were talking about him at the drive in. Ponyboy liked Dally the least. But, he was apart of the greaser gang and he was going to stick up for him no matter what. They were like brothers and you stand up for your brothers. “He’d leave you alone if he knew you, I said and that was true” (Hinton 65) He had know that Dally wasn’t the nicest, but if you had been close to him he would protect you and stand up for you. He is also a very good friend and a good gang member.
In the beginning of the book, Dally goes to the movies and starts to bother a girl named Cherry. When she threatens to call the cops on him he says, (22) ”You ought to see my record sometime, baby [...], guess what I’ve been in for?” But then, Jonny sticks up for Cherry, and Dally ends up stocking out of the movie theater because he likes Jonny too much to hit him. Dally sounds like he’s proud of his record when he tells Cherry that. Dally needs the gang in his life because his family doesn’t care about anything he ever does. He just needs someone to look up to him.
The Inspector plays an intriguing role in J.B Priestley’s Inspector Calls. There are many different interpretations of the Inspectors role in the play but in my opinion he represents the author Priestley without the audience knowing until the end of the play. The Inspector as a character is used to show Priestley’s views of social and political unjust of his time.
One day, while my son Zac and I were out in the country, climbing around in some cliffs, I heard a voice from above me yell, "Hey Dad! Catch me!" I turned around to see Zac joyfully jumping off a rock straight at me. He had jumped and them yelled "Hey Dad!" I became an instant circus act, catching him. We both fell to the ground. For a moment after I caught him I could hardly talk.
The narrator cracked during the section when the police didn’t leave because the narrator began to hear strange noises and became impatient.
J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls I am currently studying a play called An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestly. Basically, this play is about a suicide in which a whole family, the Birlings are implicated. The play is set in the home of a middle class family, on a spring evening of 1912. This play contains an important message for today’s society.
How has watching a production of ‘An Inspector Calls’ by J.B.Priestley enhanced the script and furthered your understanding of the play? Refer to themes and characters in your analysis. ‘An Inspector Calls’ – J.B. Priestley = == ==
